You make sound like sony cares about you, really, it does. I've seen YLoD's as much as RRoD's. They're all companies, in this world people like them plan on gainning one thing, money. Whether it's from statisfying customers or bleeding them dry they could care less as long as the arrow points up. My friend had a plethora of problems with his ps3, YLoD, laser diode dying, etc. Guess what? He had to pay for all of those problems. So really no one is more "heavenly" than the other.

I'm amazed you managed to get that comment posted last time I made a comment about poor workmanship and heating problems it was removed by the moderator in under 25 seconds of me posting it! let's see what happens this time?

my firends xbox is brand new too he bought it 2 weeks ago he updated it for the system update then 4 days later he got the 3rrod he sent it in for repairs and they sent him a refurbish xbox with scuff stains and alot of scratches on it . this made him mad he paid 399.99 and they give him a $90 piece of crap refurbed back to him . i don't know whats going on with this stuff my other friend is on his 8th xbox and is going to be his last.

I too won't make any comments on poor workmanship the only thing I will say is I got RRoD two months ago.  I sent it off and they repaired it for FREE.  I got it back 9 days ago now and I have just had my email through to send it off for repair again because I now have Error E74.
They said it had been through 2 hours of extensive testing, well im sorry i just dont believe that one bit, i believe I recieved a dodgy refurbed one back in return.
Yes I am grateful for the free repairs but it seems that I am spending more time appart from my console than with it seen as I only got it last july and this is the 4th time it will have been sent away.

I'm very please to see MS taking responsibility for this issue. I was about to conduct an investigative report on this matter for my employer (one of the two major international news outlets *1) and literally had spoken to MS on the phone starting at 4pm EST and ending at 4:48pm EST the day before this recent announcement, requesting they waive the fee to repair my Elite's E74 error, since this has nothing to do with normal wear and tear and everything to do with faulty hardware. 

After speaking with two supervisors and presenting my Press credentials they said that if I saw the RROD first, they could then waive the fee.  I explained that did not happen and I was told that they were "trying to help me out".  They again asked me "are you sure you didn't see the RROD before the E74 error?" I said I would not lie to get the repair and that they needed to address the issues of faulty hardware construction and waive the fee for that reason.  I think they got spooked when I mentioned I was recording the phone conversation (which is legal since they were recording as well *2).  I spoke with the India based call center and my contacts were "Kurt" and "Bernard".  I was treated with exceptional courtesy and respect and thank these gentleman for handling my phone call with such professionalism.

I hope that this is partially what prompted the announcement made the next morning around 7am regarding the OP.  I also give major kudos to the two websites who compiled the data on the E74 errors, which is what attracted us to investigate the issue in the first place.  Blogs and websites are what give power to the people and everyone who participated on those sites are equally responsible for pushing MS to do the right thing here.

I also agree that for MS to state that only "a very small percentage of our XBOX customers have reported receiving an error that displays E74".  This is simply not true.  If you Google "XBOX E74" you will see thousands of reports on this issue.  I also would like very much for MS to replace these units with new, non-refurbished consoles, so we can benefit from the cooler running Jaspers and save headaches for both the consumer, as well as to save MS from having to repeatedly repair these units in the future.

I'm waiting for my box so I can ship out my console.  Many consumers, including myself, went ahead and bought a Jasper-based Arcade console because I figured the additional $90 would at least guarantee me a cooler running machine.  You will note that many of us bought the new Arcade so in the bigger picture, MS BENEFITED by refusing to pay for the repairs up to recently.

I will post an update both here and on my companies website to explain the outcome of the E74 repair and what they did for my console, since it will be dismantled immediately upon return by my technical team *3.  Lets cross our fingers that they do whats right and full-out replace these with brand new up-to-date systems and not refurbs, or the story will run as is.

*1: This post is being made as an XBOX 360 and XBOX Live consumer and NOT on behalf of my employer. I may reference this post in the future.
*2: I do not advise that people use recording devices during phone conversations with MS unless they clearly understand the laws regarding wiretapping, cross-state and international law, as well as how to gain consent to conduct phone recordings.
*3: Two of which are former Microsoft employees and have participated in both refurbishing units and were the ones who explained the cause of this E74 error to me in great detail.

Don't know how long for a E74 repair as mine only got picked up today.

My last repair was back with me in just over two weeks but the one before that took nearly 6 weeks!!

well i sent my new xbox in and now i'm getting a refurb xbox that is not mine so if it gets any problems and i'm out of a xbox longer i just smell a MS lawsuit .

A single person filing a class action lawsuit with that incentive will loose indefinetly. It's like a scout going up against an uber'd heavy. As long as they fufill the requirements (fix or replace) you can't do anything but complain.

It varies. It often takes 2-4 weeks throughout the whole process and can be similar for different errors too.

I sure hope Microsoft does replace older motherboards with the new Jasper motherboards. These motherboards have all the hype right now with the theory of them taking up less volts, less amperes, and having a cooling system.

Afterall, doing this will save Microsoft time, because they'll be receiving boxes after boxes of broken 360 consoles. Wouldn't it be so much easier to just give us these new motherboards, hoping it'll fix the problem for good? This will also lessen our "waiting-for-Xbox-to-come-back-from-repair" time.

4/14/09- E74 Errors Now Under 3-Year Warranty

I got a queston. I bought an xbox from a pawn shop in July and I got Error 74 like the 9th of april. My question is, I submit a repair status. When and how are they going to bill me? Its out of warranty because the guy before me removed the sticker.

How can you tell if your machine has the Jasper MB?

not really this one guy filed a lawsuit  agianst Microsoft because of the bad service and they way their xbox was design and he won the lawsuit . so they came up with the idea for the repair center but it still seems they are still repairing the xbox with bad parts so yes their is still a good lawsuit if anyone has that in mind.

Let me change the last part of my original post.  I think it would save MS money in the future, and the consumers headaches in the future - if MS replaces these E74 consoles with Jasper based systems.  When I stated I do not want a refurb, but a new system, I should clarify that I mean I want ALL NEW INTERNALS.  Since my Elite has the HDMI I see no reason why they cant just slap a new mobo/65nm chipsets into the original casing.  But what's next to go?  It's technically cost-effective in the long run.  Not to mention that many consumers who suffered the E74 simply went out and bought a new Jasper-based Arcade system instead of paying MS for the repair. 

If MS takes a good close look at the consumers registered consoles and see's how many E74 suffers adopted a brand new system instead of repairing the original console, that should give them more of an incentive to possibly replace the broken console with a brand new one.

Silver, I believe that if your xbox was made after October of 08 then you have it. theres other ways like looking at what TEAM made it. Search how to tell if you have a jasper in Google and u'll find out

"Heavenly" is a pretty strong word. I was'nt saying one company cares more than the other. Just that I have seen this problem W/ the 360 than w/ ps3. To think Any Big Business really cares is hilarious. And if your buddy had a warranty than they should have fixed it.(unless it was a wear & tear problem & not a technical one.) I've had a 360 for little over a year & this has happened twice.(every 6 months)And the only reason MS is fixing this is , All the bad press they have received & the fact they are in a race W/ other gaming companies to sell the most systems.When in fact if they were not in such a rush to get their product out first, they may have fixed the problem before it ever hit the stores.( If you remember, the first xbox came out later & it was superior. And the ps2 was rushed & look at all the problems they had w/ it.) I just wish MS would have remembered the lesson they learned the first time! The first out of the gate , does'nt always win the race.

You should be able to print out the shipping label. Get your own box and send it, voila.

Heavenly was in quotations as in it's context is debatable within my post. You pretty much just further emphasized my post. I basically said no one is better than the other; which btw your post did show bias towards ps3 mainly for the "new ps3 consumer." All in all I'm no fanboy, in fact I'm far from one. I Love the 360 and I would love the ps3 except for the price point, which if it dropped 50$, again, I would instantly buy one(80gb).

There's a difference between a company's service towards customers (repair center) and just having hardware problems. My point is, one person would have little to no effect against them. You need a large amount before something will happen. (press) Let's just let fox have a go at it. They'll blow everything out of proportion just like everything they air. *shakes fist at them*

The original answer you received is not accurate.  The easiest way to tell if you have a Jasper is to look at the back of your console.  To the left of the serial # and MFR date you will see the 12 voltage rail information.  If it says 12.1A you have a Jasper, if it says 14.6A you have a Falcon. 

I picked up an Arcade edition with a MFR Date of 12-08-2009 that had a Falcon, so I returned it and found one with a Jasper.

Do i get a free month of xbox live ? since i will not be using it for a month? all i know is if it happens again after i get it repaired i am throwing this giant paper weight out the window and i am picking up a ps3. great job m.$

It's very common to get a 1 monther back with your repaired/refurbished console.

Whoa, this is insane!
Just last night before going to bed at around 12:30am EST, I checked the repair status of my Xbox and it was at the "Waiting for Console" stage.
I wake up this morning, check my e-mail, and found 3 new e-mails in my Inbox. During my sleep, it appears that they received my console, my console is now being set up for repair, the repair is in progress, the repair is finished, and, it's on its way back!

Amazing!

they are going to send you a different xbox back that had been refurbished if you remember your xbox serial number from the xbox you sent out i might want to check what your serial number is now.

once repaired they give you a 90day warranty +1 month live _most people think they get a 3 year warranty with it but they don't they fix it free if you purchased the xbox less then 3 years.

85% of the refurbish xbox's you get back will have to be fixed again since they don't work put the right hardware into them as what they should put in.
