Re: Report Phishing Sites To This Email
Starting to see a lot of Modern Warfare 2 beta sign-up scams now. I'm emailing off all the ones I come across.

Now I'm a little curious
You say you take down the web addresses, which is outstanding, but the people aren't prosecuted?  Is anything happening to them as far as xbox is concerned?  Do they at least track em down, name wise, and try some thing to prevent them from at the very least from getting back onto xbox live?  You have the definition of phishing as "Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.", but nothing happens to em? I'm not disagreeing to what your trying to atempt here, however I'm kind of disappointed in the Mircosoft Corporation.  Just so I'm clear, not you folks, you guys are doing an awesome job and have my support. Just a little curious is all.

Re: Now I'm a little curious
I'm only a mod, doing my part to try and help stop the phishers.  It's up to MS to decide who/when to go after any phishers.

I wish they would go after them more too, but the sheer numbers of phishers out there makes it difficult & costly to go after all but the most serious offenders.

They must be reported & removed on a case-by-case basis, just like the phishig sites.

Just remember, NOBODY, has a valid MS Markeplace points generator.  Anytime you see one, it IS a phishing attempt.

But those guys on Halo 3 promised to put points on my account if I gave them my e-mail and password. They must be telling the truth Wink [;)]. Yeah, I don't trust anyone. If someone is going so far out of their way to "help" you, something's gotta be up...

disclosure: I work for a web security company, and we work with MS, google and others shutting down scammers, adware pushers, botnets etc.

with that out of the way - you can usually get ANY file removed from rapidshare yourself, simply go to the contact us page they have and email them. from what I can gather, they have a bot system in place that automatically hoses ANYTHING sent to it (I guess that makes sense, there's no way they'd have the resource to manually check everything sent to them).

the only thing you need to ensure is that if it's the .de version of rapidshare, you send the mail to the .de address and if it's the .com version, you send the mail to the .com address. They will NOT remove it if you send to the wrong domain even though the same guy gets the email(!)

as for prosecutions - in 99% of cases the info used to register with the free host is fake, or the host is a reseller who is in on the scam, or the person responsible is in a country where the law can't touch them, or they're too young to be prosecuted (we see kids as young as 13 trading credit card details, so it's not unusual).

the most you can hope for is that the phish site you report is taken offline. anything beyond that is an unexpected - and rare - bonus.

Thanks for the link to that email address. I was hoping for such a thing. I was sent a link for a free Modern Warfare 2 beta. Checked it out - none of those are real. They're all phishers, as Infinity Ward haven't released a beta.

Some hosts are more resonsive than others.  Most sites get taken down in a couple of days, however, I do come across ones where the host is apathetic & it can take a while longer.

Re-send the site to the email & I'll check it out again.  Thanks.

It involves running a trace on the site to find the company hosting the site/page.  Then email(s) must be sent to the hosting company, informing them that they are hosting a site involved in illegal activity.

Most hosts will remove the offending sites pretty quickly.  A few out there really drag their feet about it, so I keep after them a bit harder.

Not sure which forum to post this too, but an obvious scam.
I recieved a message on Xbox live from "Live Reporting" saying that a hacker has been posting threads in forums about hacking my account.  The message says that the new Xbox live update has a firewall I can download to protect my Xbox from this attack, I just need to message him back and I will be able to download it.  Just wanted to report this person and didn't know where to do it.  This looked best, even though it is not a website, just a user doing the phishing.

Let me start this off by making one thing perfectly clear.  There is no such thing as an 'MS Points Generator'.  Any site/entity claiming to have a working points generator for attaining free marketplace points is lying - plain and simple.

Please spread the word about this and protect yourself.  Never, ever use your Live ID and password to log on anywhere other than Xbox.com or your Xbox 360 console (or other official MS sites that utilize the Live ID for identification - double check the page URL before logging in).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phishing:
Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, it's quick and easy for unscrupulous people out there to setup a phishing website.  All it takes to be caught by a phisher is being gullible enough and/or greedy enough to believe that signing up at one of these sites will get you something for nothing.

There are other methods of phishing as well.  Be wary of a youtube video that's been making the rounds - supposedly showing a method for 'recovering' a Live ID from another user (i.e. A 'how to' for stealing Live accounts).  This video proposes a series of steps to follow that will not work and will only serve to provide your own Live ID and password to phishers.

The purpose of this thread is for you, the users, to report any phishing websites you find by emailing the information to: phisherhunter@yahoo.com

I will take it from there and pass on the info to the appropriate people at Microsoft, so that the site can be taken down ASAP.  Please be sure to only list sites that are actually engaged in phishing.  Unfortunately, sites that merely discuss phishing and how to do it are not illegal and cannot be taken down.  Even though it may only be an inconvenience to the phishers to take down their sites (since they can always make a new site), every little bit helps.

So spread the word; nothing comes for free.  Don't fall for any of the phishing scams out there!

Now, start emailing those sites!

dunnno if you heard about it but there was a website where you designed a car then usually won ms points ans had code sent to email address but the promotion expired a while a go though
