Here's a few of them:

Page 22, bottom headline states: "...then FFIII (FF XI in Japan)..."
I think OXM meant to say (FF VI in Japan)

And then on page 68, The Highest Selling Games XBLA Game article feature, shows Bankshot Billiards 2 selling 519,243 copies through 2/28/09, when in fact many of these sales were free downloadable codes that were included in the 12 Month Xbox Live Starter Packs. There was no mention of this at all.

Saw the headline on the newstand, haven't bought the issue, but I have a MAJOR problem with these type of articles.  Well, a few actually.

1.  The concept comes off as pretentious and arrogant.  I know what I like, I know what I don't.  Saying I should be playing "x" if it's a genere I don't care about just insults me.  For example, not just OXM, but other magizines whined and "witched" (sic) about how no one bought Psychonauts.  I got tired of reading it because I persoanlly don't care for most platformers.  Not bashing them, just saying I don't like them as a rule.  Don't browbeat and tell me to spend my money on something that I generally don't like.

2.  Not a fan of advocacy journalism.  The only place that type of opinion belongs is in reviews.  Usually when I read a movie review, it's about why the movie is good or bad, not schilling for a certain one.

3.  If you buy a bad game from your local retailer, you're not stuck with it.  Sure the value is somewhat decreased, but you can trade it, sell it, get something back fo it.  If you buy a bad XBOX Live game, you're stuck with it.  That's why my Live games except Watchmen are arcade classics.  Because I know what I'm getting.

Before the obligitory knee-jerks, flaming, etc., begins, I'm attempting to point out why I don't like those kind of articles.  Therefore, don't come back with "well, you didn't read the article so how you can you comment?" blast.  If I don't like those kind of articles in the first place, not exactly going to read it.

You make some good points. I assume that you are saying you don't like a particular genre because you have tried a few examples of good ones, and didn't care for them. If that is not the case then you are not giving other genres a chance. You are right I believe in pointing out that mags shouldn't try to tell you which games to buy/play. they should be opinionated, but not so authoritative in those opinions. Does OXM come across like that? I think a little bit sometimes, but I like many of the games that those reviewers refer. I think it goes back to the whole idea about trusting reviewers, and to a lesser extent knowing the reviewer's likes and dislikes.

You have a fair point regarding demos.  But honestly, I'm not apt to download one.  I'm on a 3 MB DSL connection.  It was painful enough downloading TLAD for GTA IV.  I realize that some folks have faster connections.  But in my case, it's sometimes more trouble than it's worth.

Actually, it's more of a case of, I know what's fun for me.  Just like everyone has their own tastes in movies.  As to trustring reviewers, honestly, I'm at a point now to where I don't trust any review fully anymore.  Simply because the scores seem to vary so much. 

OXM gave Dead Space a 6.5.  Another magazine gave it an 8.5  A certain known game review site gave Wheelman a 6, that magazine loved it.  I'm enjoying Godfather II on the other system, no one has liked it. 

So I have trouble giving full faith and credit to any reviewer of any magazine.  Because of that, I'm not going to be receptive to anyone saying "You should play this game."

Not sure where your troubles are coming in. I had 1.5 MB DSL (just last week upgraded to a faster DSL speed) and everything I downloaded took very little time. Plus it is not like other download services where you can't do other things while it downloads.

But Your original issue was with OXM's artcle about xbla, and, unless you get all your arcade games from a retail source, you need to download each one anyway. So what is the issue with downloading a demo instead of the full game? And, by the way, if you are willing to part with your hard earned cash for a game like Watchmen, I don't see the problem with spending your money on the actuall good games that were pointed out in the article.

1.  Don't want to broadcast too much of my private life, but my work involves my computer. Therefore, tying it up with downloads while I have to work (sometimes online) isn't something I want to do.

2.  Never had an RROD.  I belive in taking care of my electronics.  That means not leaving it on all the time.  Asking me to risk damage to my 360 to download a demo is a risk I'm not willing to take.

Not saying my opinion is right, simply saying it's my opinion.

Let's see, a movie-based game upon a movie I loved?  VS a game I know nothing about?  You don't see the difference?  The issue is taking time over DLing a demo I've not heard of.  When I downloaded Time Pilot (full version), loved the game, was addicted to it at a local restaurant (now closed) that had it. 

The article asks (or demands) a leap of faith which I personally am not willing to do, and don't particularly care to be told I should do.  That's why my XBLA games are things I know.  And 98 percent of my games are retro arcade classics (the other two percent are Doom and Watchmen.)

Not claiming to be right, just saying why I do what I do.

This is a  nice feature that keeps you from having to worry about excessive on time with your 360.


I don't want you to think I am brow beating you. I am just showing you that there are things set up to alleve some of your concerns and still allow you to enjoy everything that the 360 has to offer.

Plus I really have never noticed any slow down when downloading while also on my PC doing things (usually work for school) and also having one of my kids on the other computer all at the same time. And remember this was with a slower DSL connection than you have. DSL is very nice about how it allocates upload and download.

As far as I can tell, he is confused by the entire concept of any suggestion. For some reason, Scorpion, you see downloading a demo of an arcade game to be too great of a commitment on your part when, a-it costs $0, b- for most games it is no more than a few minutes to download which, as Dagda pointed out, could be done while you aren't even using your console (safely) and c- for most games, it will take up very little space and they can be deleted as soon as you find out it's not for you, and, if need be, redownloaded over and over again. Honestly, if I didn't already own a majority of the games suggested in the article, I could que up every one of them and either start or finnish the downloads within an hour. Even the games on the list that I don't already own, I have played the demos, and guess what, I don't ever have to play any of them ever again, and it didn't cost me anything more than a little bit of time. Worst case scenario, I believe that all of the games can be found on past OXM demo disks.

I appreciate all the thoughts.  That being said, my work is often time-sensetive and will often times require uploading or downoading pictures.  Therefore, I don't want to tie up the connection and chance it.  I don't download ITunes songs when I'm working, it's just my cautious nature.

As to being able to shut down the 360 settings, thanks.  But my only gaming time is late at night, usually don't have that much time to be searching through demos during the day.  If I did have time, why use it for something I don't know? 

For me, it boils down to being asked (or told) to take time to download something I'm not familiar with.  I either have to sacrifice time or money to do it (demo or full game) and for the unknown, it's simply not worth it.

So it's the principle of an outside source telling you what to play or what not to play. I get that, but it's not like they're ordering you to do anything. It's a mag, nothing else. They're just showing the what you think is unseen, or at least a part of it.

That's where the demoes (or demos? idk) come in. You'd SEE the unseen, and though it may take up your time or space on your HD (or card), you can still check out something you wouldn't have seen any other way.

Don't knock dl'ing until you try it, is all I'm saying.

I not a regular reader but I bought it for the AVP feature.

The game looks awesome and a good review.

I just hope they do *** up the AVP game by limiting to Predators weapons to satisfy whiney noob Marine players like on AVP2 for the PC.

If you open the sports section, are their news stories telling you what games to watch?  If your local newspaper has a TV section, are their articles saying you should watch this show?   There is a difference between opinion journalism and factual stories.  The only time you'd ever hear a movie critique even say anything even close to "see this movie" is in an opinion piece. 

An opionion column masquerading as a factual story only insults my intelligence.  It's bad journalism.  You want to advocate an XBLA game, do a review, have one of the editors do a column on it in the back.  Don't parade it as a news feature, because it's not.

I do not base my purchases solely on what they say, but i welcome as much opinion as possible on the game. Is not  90% of what is in a game review, preview, ect an opinion?

And i believe your problem with downloading games from live is also counter argumentative. if u say you will not accept others opinions on what you should be playing, then what other course of action do you have besides dl'ing a demo that would give u a hands on impression of a game that will make you either buy the game or delete it from ur hdd. I mean with that logic, you would not have played any games (not just xbla titles, 360 titles as well) that were not established franchises that you've played before, yet you've obviously played many games that would be contrary to that argument (tho, aside from the watchmen, you obviously only play classic titles on the xbla).

If you think about it, and run that bit of logic (not taking the opinion of people on what to play, or trying a demo of the game) backwards, it would ultimately lead you to never trying any games at all (chicken or the egg?), unless you just bought a title by closing your eyes and pointing at the sales shelf and hoping it's a title you'd enjoy.
