IMO, i think Gan Ning and Lu Bu changed for the better though. Gan Ning's Infinite Renbu + level 50= ridiculous power and speed. Lu Bu from level 35^= ridiculous in all aspects. Koei made him an absoulute monster in this game, and he is really the only redeeming aspect for the all forgotten characters in Musou. Cant wait for Empires :D, Lu Bu will rule all.
There is a reason for this.
Anyone remember the ROTK series?
The first game bombed, ROTK: I was terrible, so we'll skip it.
ROTK: II for NES and SNes way back when I was a kid had it right. Granted it was more strategy back then, there was no running around the battle field hacking and slashing. You'd assign your generals soilders....then luck and mathmatics took over. It was more of what you guys know as Empires after the title.
Did I like the fact that I wasn't in control of the fight, not really, however back then the generals were rated properly.
Then there were only 3 catagories used to rate them. War Ability(It's pretty clear isn't it? This was the beast factor), Intellect(Would determine chances of spy related things such as switching sides, forged letters, and other various ways of messing with your opponents), and Charm(This controled general's ability to recruit, get an alliance, or anything else that had to do with gaining favor from someone else).
They were rated from 1-100, 1 being the low and 100 being the high. Here are a few stats from some generals from back when.
Lu Bu:
Intellect - 10
War Ability - 100
Charm - 15
Guan Yu:
Intellect - 85
War Ability - 99
Charm - 92
Zhang Fei:
Intellect - 35
War Ability - 99
Charm -37
Sun Jian:
Intellect - 87
War Ability - 91
Charm - 89
Cao Cao:
Intellect - 91
War Ability - 95
Charm - 91
Ma Teng:
Intellect - 54
War Ability - 95
Charm - 82
Zhou Yu:
Intellect - 97
War Ability - 70
Charm - 94
Liu Bei:
Intellect - 87
War Ability - 70
Charm - 98
You see officers strengths have gotten out of hand, it was more real back in that game than it is in the DW series.
Back when obviously Lu Bu was beast when it came to battle, but suffered else where.
There are officers in the DW series of games that are out of places, while some of those numbers above might be off, they are damn close.
The point is, you guys sitting here crying about how "weak" people are, now this person is stronger than this or whatever, keep in mind these games have been around longer than most of you, Koei has been at it for roughly 25 years, they are just slowly moving the game back to what it was when the make up of the general qualities were more realistic.
There were also little un-written type of things back when too.
Example being, personal combat, anyone who played these games will tell you before battle started most of the time two dudes would duke it out, their health = their war ability level, whoever hit zero first lost, only 10 passes would happen.
However the un-written thing I was refering to was take a guy like Huang Gai, who's War Ability was only 88 and put him against anyone higher like Ma Chao for example who was only 98, 87% of the time or so Huang Gai would be down at roughly a 35-40% disadvantage and would hold out for a draw or win.
It's little crap like that I miss, little random things bases on the guy's history and character that made him stand out.
Just an FYI, if anyone goes looking around for an emulator and rom for this game, you'll not find a true untampered copy anywhere. I've played roughly 25 different Roms and they all have their coding messed with, a good way to tell is if you start the same scenario 10 times and the same flood hits every single start up, you'll notice a bad rom because things always repeat.
Anyway, just wanted to throw my theory on why Koei is making the changes they are, seems they are getting back to their roots.
Also Koei, bring back L'Emperur(which was another historical simulation game based on the life of Napolean.
Edit: Almost forget, DW6 is my favorite so far, because DW1-5 = the same game over and over and over and over and over and over again.
The new combat engine overhaul is much appreciated, graphically it's superior, however I do not like the lack of the create an officer option, I frowned when I saw this.
