Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
I have the SAME issue on my 24" monitor!  Why not a 1920x1200?  I can't run my monitor at 1:1 (it doesn't support it)

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360

im confused, i just order the Acer G24 Gaming Monitor to use with my elite, now it has both HDMI and DVI inputs, which is why i bought it mainly for 360 gaming.

its native resolution is 1900x1200, according to your post 360s dont support this so will the ultimate gaming monitor make 360 games look 'muggy' as you put it?

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
in regards to my question about the Acer G24, i found this online:

"you can either run HDMI sources in full screen of use the black bars at the top and bottom to make it run 1:1 pixel mapping"

so i assume if its got 1:1 pixel mapping that means that the monitor will still be running at 1920x1200, but the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen will be the extra pixels that the xbox does not support, which the 360 will be running at the best possible resoultion but on a 1920x1200 monitor? is this correct?

as i said in my previous post the native res is 1920x1200, its marketed as 'the ultimate gaming monitor' so surely the 360 will be fine with it?

im jsut starting to get worried ive ordered a £330 monitor that will make my games look terrible!

" Post NXE update...... xbox 360 supports 16:10.....(though this displays with thin black bars top and bottom)..... etc (i wish it would let me copy and paste) Why is this, i have a Samsung Syncmaster 205 bw which is a 20" 1680x1050 monitor, connected by a VGA HD AV cable, when i set my console resolution to 1680x1050 i get aforementioned black bars top and bottom, will this be fixed??? it's really annoying. also while connected via VGA the text on the dashboard and in games seems to have a "ghost" on the right side of it this is also very annoying

Is there any special program i need to use to play my 360 on my laptop using a dell atsc/ntsc converter.  I have the AV cables connected into one end and the usb cables connected to my laptop.  I tried using windows media center but its not detecting the signal.

i would double check the spec of your laptop, its very rare that laptops have inputs for the monitor.

any advice for my query? 1920x1200 native res but with 1:1 pixel mapping, will it be ok with the 360?

I have a 24” DELL Monitor who’s native rez is 1900x1200. The ONLY game that I get black bars on the bottom, top and sides??? on (running the 1920x1080 screen rez with the VGA adapter) is Rock Band 2. You should be ok it should look fine. You’ll notice horizontal lines at times if you sit to close. You have to look for them. If your Monitor does 16x12 it will do 16x10 and look great. Also if you’re using HDMI it should give you the 1080p HD screen resolution instead of the VGA’s 1920x1080 which should look a bit better. I can notice a difference between the HDMI and VGA connections.

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
thanks man, i ended up phoning Acers technical team, and they said that its designed to take HD game console inputs, and that the aspect ratio is 16:10, it has 1:1 pixel mapping etc..etc.. so when i hook it up 1080p it should look amazing.

if i have any jaggedy lines im returning it, still got to wait another month until it arrives though :(

I always find that this normally depends on how close to the monitor you are sitting.

It sends the signal to my laptop via usb port

I'm dumb when it comes to laptops, so you're better off asking in a different topic, most likely better off starting a fresh one for the anwser to this one mate. Sorry.

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
I believe what you are both talking about is called a TV tuner, or capture card. Basically you plug in your AV cable from you xbox 360 into this capture card, and then it outputs to usb into your pc or laptop. Usually when you buy one you get some software that allows you to record or view what is coming from your capture card live (I.E. you can play your games, but watch out not all TV tuner / capture cards are made equally, some will struggle over usb 2.0 to play your games without lag, so check the reviews.) But anyways @ the guy talking about the Dell converter, search dell.com and try to find your product or find the original packaging and see if you have any software for it, I'm not sure windows media player would just pick it up as a signal so that or call dell tech support if need be, but search the web a bit first if you come up with nothing! (Don't forget it probably needs drivers, so make sure windows sees it is connected in device manager)

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
I've been looking around but I can't seem to find the answer I'm hoping to find so this subject line is very close to what I'm in search of....so here is the deal...

I have a Dell PC with a VGA  output and a Dell 22" monitor with a VGA input (it also has a DVI input) and now I have the Xbox 360 and the VGA cable. what I'd like to do is use an A/B switch so I can use the 1 monitor with the two units (the PC and the Xbox 360).

can I do this ?
if so what would be the best A/B switch for me to use ?
if not what can I do ?

Thanks in advance for any help

I would guess that the red, white, yellow female RCA jacs are the outputs of a video card to a monitor/TV...

i'd recommend that you connect your pc via dvi to the monitor and the box via vga.
if your pc has no dvi but your box has hdmi you can use a hdmi/dvi cable (~10$) to connect the box to the monitor and leave the pc with vga

thanks for the info...a follow up question....
is the hdmi/dvi cable just for the video ? do I still need the box's vga cable for the audio ?

thanks again !

dvi is video-only
hdmi includes digital audio (but i know no hdmi/dvi cable that has an audio-conector)

with my elite came a little cable that has audio-plugs only (red&white and an optical spdif), maybe you got this too with your box

----------edit----------
it's the short cable in microsofts hdmi-set:

Re: Betreff: Re: Betreff: Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
Great guide!  I just bought the MS VGA cable set and hooked up my Pro to a Viewsonic 1912wb and it looks fantastic!  Much better than I had hoped to be honest.  I didn't even notice before that the monitor had two small speakers in it, duh.  The sound quality is not that great (big surprise) and I will get a couple of short RCA cable pieces so I can run the audio though my "line in" on the PC audio card.

I had to go to several stores before I found one that carried the VGA cable.  A clerk in one store actually told me that his store didn't carry the cable because their philosophy was that "consoles should only be hooked up to TV's, not to computer monitors."  Say What??  I know the manager so I am going to have to ask him about that as I don't think that is the store's actual view on things.  Interesting though.

Re: Betreff: Re: Betreff: Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
Are there any plans for 1920x1200 support? I know it is a higher resolution than the games are developed on, but could the 360 output black bars above and below a 1080p image to give the monitor users some love? If the black bars were static and had nothing to do with the actual video processing than wouldn't it be do-able because no extra work would have to be done by the 360 itself?

I  was disappointed to find out that my Samsung T240 did not support 1:1 pixel mapping so now I am stuck using a distorted picture through my  HDMI port.

Unless it has been fixed by Microsoft you cannot currently get sound using HDMI.
