Welcome, I made this thread in order to help people connect their Xbox 360 to Xbox Live. Many frequently asked questions are in here and I answered them the best I could. Hopefully this will be useful to people here on the forum. I didn't notice a FAQ in this section so I thought why not make one? If you have any other suggestions/tips/questions, you can post them here.

First thing, an Xbox Live Gold Membership is required to play multiplayer games online. A Silver membership will not allow to you play online games. For all the differences regarding Gold and Silver memberships, click here.

1. What do I need to connect my Xbox 360 to Xbox Live using a wireless connection?

Other than your Xbox 360 and a working broadband internet connection from your ISP (such as Comcast), you'll need a few other things.

- A router (Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, etc). This will allow other devices to connect to your internet. Routers can be bought at your local consumer electronics retailer. For more information on setting up your router to your modem, give your router company a call. A quick Google search may help too.

- The Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter. This will allow your Xbox 360 to pickup your wireless network after you have set up your router. You can buy the Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter here. You must have this in order to use a wireless connection.

2. What kind of router should I get?

Almost any router could possibly work with Xbox Live, but I would recommend either a Linksys WRT54G or any router that is specifically made for online gaming. I used to have a Netgear router which worked very well, too.

3. What do I need to connect my Xbox 360 to Xbox Live using a wired connection?

The best method is simply connecting your Xbox 360 console to your router (if you have one) or modem via an Ethernet cable. Plug in the cable to the back of your console, and the other end into your router or modem. This will give you direct connection and no Wireless Network Adapter or Router is needed.

4. How fast should my internet connection be for Xbox Live?

You will need a high speed broadband cable or DSL connection to connect to Xbox Live. You will have problems with a dial-up, ISDN, or satellite internet connection, so you can count that out. Microsoft recommends at least a 256Kbps connection. Check with your ISP to find out how fast your connection is. Keep in mind -- the better connection you have, the better your online gaming experience will be :-)

5. OK, I have everything that I need set up, now what do I do?

If you have another computer or laptop in your house, check and make sure you can connect to the internet (especially if you're using a router for wireless connection). If it works, then we're ready to get the Xbox 360 connected.

Turn on your Xbox 360,  go to the Dashboard and under "My Xbox", all the way over to the right, select "System Settings", then "Network Settings".  After that, select "Configure Network" and under the "Basic Settings" tab, select the list that contains the "Wireless Mode", "Network Name (SSID), etc. Now select "Scan for Networks". Your wireless connection network should show (assuming you aren't too far away from your router). Select it, enter the password (passwords are highly recommended for wireless networks), and set everything else to automatic (leave "Additional Settings" alone). After that, go ahead and test your Xbox Live connection. If you're using a wired connection, just go straight to "Test Xbox Live Connection".

6. What is the best security type for my router to use on Xbox Live?

WPA security is probably the best to use with Xbox Live, as it is more secure than WEP. Xbox 360 does not currently support WPA2, so don't try that.

7. How do I log into my router if I need to change the settings?

Netgear - http://192.168.0.1
Username - "admin"
Password - "password" or "admin"

Linksys - http://192.168.1.1
Username - "admin"
Password - "admin"

Belkin - http://192.168.2.1
Username - "admin"
Password - leave blank

D-link - http://192.168.0.1
Username - "admin"
Password - leave blank

If your router is not listed above, or none of the links are working for you:

Open up command prompt by clicking Start, then Run, and type "ipconfig" and press enter. See where it says "Default Gateway" (click here for example). Then type that into your browser.

8. My Xbox said something about my NAT not being open! How do I open it?

After you log in to your router, look around in each tab or subject until you find your NAT settings. If it's not set to open, change it to open. A strict or moderate NAT will most likely give you problems on Xbox Live. For more information, check out this thread.

9. For some reason my NAT will not stay open. What do I do?

Log in to your router. Find where UPnP is and set it to enabled. That should help.

10. I can't find the UPnP settings, can I open my NAT through Port Forwarding?

Yes. Go here and find your router. After that, find the Xbox Live 360 link and follow the instructions.

11. Can I connect to Xbox Live through my wireless PC/laptop?

Yes. This site has all the info you need on ICS and Bridging.

12. What if I'm at a hotel? Can I still connect to Xbox Live?

Yes. If they offer Wi-Fi, go ahead and scan for the network. If you find the hotel's network (make sure you ask someone for the password if needed), select it, and set everything to automatic. You might not have a very strong signal, depending on where you're located in the hotel. Go to Test Xbox Live Connection and hopefully you'll be able to connect.

That's all I can think of right now. If you're still having trouble connecting, try restarting all your devices. Calling your router company wouldn't be a bad idea either. Connecting to Xbox Live can be tricky! Good luck. Hope this helps.

Re: Connecting to Xbox Live FAQ
My name is Scott. I own an XBOX360 and it is not working. I called in to support on 8/10/09 to request a return label to send my XBOX in for repair. I spoke with Mel who informed me that he is having some difficulties verifying my address and I will need to be transferd to a supervisor. I then spoke to Kevin who also told me that his systems are having difficultes verifying my address. I told Kevin that the postal service changed my zip code and that may be the issue. Kevin reassured me that someone from the Systems Team will be contacting me within 3-5 days for resolution. I never recieved a call. Today 8/18/09 I called back to resolve the issue so I can enjoy my Xbox again. I spoke to another supervisor who then told me that "systems is still looking into the issue regarding your address". I asked the supervisor if he has GOOGLE Maps and to key in my address. The supervisor agreed that my address was valid after verifying it online. I then asked him "what else do I need to do?". He told me that systems will need to contact me and a repair order has yet to be created.  I work in the telecommunication industry and my performance is measured on resolving the issue at the first point of contact. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. The supervisor did not do a damn thing.  MICROSOFT are you not in the software business? Is your outsource call center using your systems? YOu should know first hand on how to repair the issues. Are there contingency plans inplace incase something like this happens. I live where I live. I recieve mail everyday. I pay a mortgage every month.....but you think I live in Imagination Land. HELP ME PLEASE. Take care of your customers please or do we not matter to you anymore?

Regards

Is there a way for me to limit the amount of pings so that at least I'll be able to play online or take care of downloads through the market place on my xbox?

Neo Rock ZX:

Unfortunately not.
Ping is the time it takes for a data packet to go from your console, to a destination and back again.

Since you're using a satellite connection, you must imagine, that the signal travels over 33.000 km up into the orbit, gets reflected back again, and then has to travel through the internet like any ordinary packet.

The problem is, that this satellite relay will cost you several seconds of lag, which will make online playing unbearably slow.

The only way to change this, is getting another broadband provider for your area, that doesn't use satellite relay.

So, for downloading marketplace content, it doesn't matter if the download starts a few milliseconds or seconds later.

But real-time online multiplayer data has to be exchanged as quickly as possible.

Hmm, well, I guess the only thing that I can do for now is download games and other stuff from my connection. I must thank you for the information that you've provided, it answered some of my problems and, to let you know, that HughesNet is the only high speed internet provider available in my area (me and my folks have tried so many other companies, but kept receiving the same damn answer!) and I'll have to go down to my cuz's and friend's crib to play my games online for now.

Satellite Internet is not compatible with Xbox live. Broadband is good and all High-Speed ISPs are good. Not compatible with Cable Internet and Satellite.

Could you try to reset your network settings in the Xbox to factory defaults? Also, what is the make and exact model of your router (for example "It's a Linksys WRT1234", and not "It's that wireless Linksys router". It's like saying "I have that blue Ford" when asked for your car.)

Could you check, if your router has DHCP enabled?

Hello, first, excuse my English, I am Brazilian and I do not speak English very well. I can not connect my xbox to the internet, use a 3g modem, will the Xbox does not recognize 3G modems? Is recognized, there is a step by step to configure it .... Thanks

Betreff: Re: Connecting to Xbox Live FAQ
First of all, a 3G connection is not recommended for online multiplayer, as you will experience severe lag.

But for downloads of marketplace content, you can use 3G without problems.

Now to the modem: The Xbox is only able to use an ethernet connection or the original Microsoft USB WLAN adapter.
If your 3G modem has to be connected via USB, then the Xbox 360 cannot use it directly.

You then have to connect a computer with the 3G modem to the internet, and then share this internet connection with a LAN connection of your computer.
You must then connect your Xbox console with an ethernet cable to your computer.

To be able to do this, the 3G modem has to show up as a dial up connection or a broadband connection in Windows. If the 3G modem uses it's own program to make an internet connection, this internet sharing won't probably work.

Ask your 3G provider, if they offer a device that connects to their 3G network and provides you with an ethernet port.

It's just, that when using DHCP, the lease of an IP address gets reserved for some devices for a certain time.
Since you visited your relatives, the lease time might have run out, and something is acting up or is "stuck".
So since you said you didn't change anything, I suggest to reset everything to factory defaults, so this erratic behaviour might clear itself up with this.

Or, try to connect the Xbox to another device and test the connection there. If the test also fails, then try a different cable. If it still fails, then there is probably a defect in your console.

I just suggested troubleshooting tips from the least desasterous possibility: A software glitch that is resolvable by resetting the devices, up to the worst case: complete hardware failure of your console's network port.

Unfortunately, the only person that can help you is the ebay seller.
If he won't help you, you have been scammed, and should report this to ebay.

You can't register a card afterwards, because the seller could have just stolen the cards from a shop and sold it to unsuspecting victims, which probably happened to you.

The Xbox can always be sent in and asked to be "fixed". Normally, you will then get a refurbished console (i.e. a console that has been broken but all broken parts have been replaced and the console tested thoroughly for functionality) right away to reduce waiting time.

If your console is still within warranty (depending on your country one or two years, but since it isn't a red ring of death not three), this exchange will be done for free.

Otherwise this exchange will cost between US $75 or $90.
The refurbished console will then have a 90 day warranty.

Or you could just buy an arcade console, plug in your own harddrive, transfer your downloaded marketplace buys, and have a new console with up to three years warranty.
