Welp, all I know is this is my all time favorite console game, and it's going to be non-functional (single player is a JOKE) after only 3 years. LAME.

And for the next 3-6 fanbois who come in here saying "oh noes, it's not Microsoft's fault, blame the dev!" I'll say to you:

M$FT sets the rules for all makers of all games on all of its platforms.
M$FT sets the rules for all makers of all games on all of its platforms.

Should we exceed an additional 6 fanboi posts about poor old innocent M$FT and the evil game devs, let me know and I'll paste a few more for you. Thanks.

Microsoft: I suspended my gold subscriptions for the first time in 5 years due to this crap, so you can work it out with Sega as to who's to blame. I think I'm going to save myself $50 on a PS3 and put as big a friggin hard drive in it as a want! Either that, or maybe a new video card. Starcraft 2 is coming after all, and by all indications, I'll still be able to play that FOR FREE in 2020! Word.

Actually, why cant Microsoft take this game servers on?

Hounds is one of the best games out there, and, to be fair, the only game i keep coming back too.

Sega should offer MS the servers, and keep us Hound players happy.

is this higg guy retarded or what?

1 ms does set rules for game makers. but none of those rules keep game makers from running their own servers like pc or sony.

2 the chrome hounds servers are not ran by ms they are ran by sega they are shutting them down.

3 go ahead and by a ps3 they have the same problems.

Yeah! Damn them for selling a product that still works!! What, are they trying to make money?!

As for this crap about blame the publisher, use your brains and realize that Microsoft SETS THE RULES for ALL publishers. The buck stops at Bill Gates' portfolio value.

1. Bill Gates is no longer the head of Microsoft, so how he has anything to do with this is beyond me.
2.Why does the online work for so many of the original xbox games? Microsoft just forget to shut those servers down? Can you even name a microsoft-run server thats been shut down? If you are gonna blame somebody, make sure you are blaming the right people.
3.Die In A Fire

your post officially wins this thread.
and to higg... the ps3 is a $300 paper weight.

Re: This is why Xbox Live sucks
LOL no you bumped your head. the idea of chrome hounds was to create a multiplayer experience people could have with either real people or AI. and to take that away is dumb. no matter how you slice it. I've been playing since it began and I will miss it greatly. I only have a select few people I care to play with and we have had alot of fun through out the past 4 years. how much could it possibly cost to keep a server going and just hit the reset once in a while. hell they have programs that will do it for you. god! I can still play duke nukem for PC online and find people without issue. why would this be any different? honestly.

Except the game isn't going to stop working. Only the online portion is not going to be accessible.

Which is as good as stopping working in reality.

The CH server is only a database that keeps track of your statistics etc. All the games are hosted on peer to beer basis.
I dont see why they are shutting it down since it shouldnt take much bandwidth nor CPU load. Atleast give someone control over the DNS entry for the server and the database files so they can set up their own server.

3 years of playing the game plus an understanding on how networks and servers work.

Maybe I am out of place here but why doesn't MS take over the server for chromehounds.  I mean if Sega is truely dropping chromehounds then they should have no problem MS running the server.  It is a win win situation cause MS saves face by not having games played on the system become obsolete and sega still has the game functional so they my still sell a few in the future. ...

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I have mentioned somewhere else that an alternative solution is to introduce advertisments into the game to generate revenue for the ongoing expenses of SEGA's servers.

If SEGA chose to introduce corporate decals, we could see squads plastered with coke and pepsi emblems facing off against each other. That might make the game even more fun.

Re: SV: This is why Xbox Live sucks
The reality is that game software is now disposable. All these devs would prefer a subscription model, and once the initial revenue shot-in-the-arm fades, they don't think at all about anyone still using it. If you don't believe that, see EVERY EA GAME lol. We're probably lucky it lasted this long by comparison to the lifecycle of even AAA titles.

You guys have mentioned some good ideas, but sadly I don't think anyone is listening.

Consumers will figure this out though. I have. If you come to a console game late in the lifecycle, save your money, unless it's a single player experience. I didn't buy COD 4 bc I didn't have much time for gaming when it came out, and even though I had lots of friends still playing online, I just rented it. It actually lasted until MW2 came out, which is impressive... yet still only truly "lasted" (bc everyone is now playing MW2) for 2 years. 2 years! Starcraft anyone?? So even with COD MW, you have to now "update your subscription" if you want the same level of online play.

It's bizzare to see really, with other aspects of the industry going to microtransactions. Perhaps the actual game is just an overgrown microtransaction to the devs now lol.

Xbox Live, a PAID service, should serve as the multiplayer game locator for ALL multiplayer games on the network. Chromehounds has the persistant world mode, which would require an additional server apart from a locator. If that were to drop (though MSFT has enough money to keep it up for sure), I'd understand. There is NO REASON why Xbox Live can't serve as a locator for playing deathmatch, team deathmatch, etc. in Chromehounds. None, except crappy design.

 Trechobezor wrote:
MS needs to make an effort to keep chromehounds alive or come out with a similar mech game in near future.

See, that's part of the trick. They want to take away your existing games so you have to buy new ones. Heck with that. This crap is going to push me back to PC gaming.

I've got 15 yr old games that still run. Chromehounds came out in 2006! It's only 2009! My quantum singularity that I'm going to pay $60 for a game that lasts only 3 years. Only the ultimate fanboy idiot (spending their parent's money) would be ok with that. Would anyone buy a game for $60 if they told you up front that it would only function for 3 years? Well as news like this gets out, I'm sure some company will jump in and provide what gamers want. I'm hearing a lot about upcoming streaming game services. If this is how Microsoft is going to treat loyal customers, then I say, let the console die.

And I'm sure we can all look forward to the upcoming class action lawsuit against used game retailers, once they are selling titles en masse (chromehounds, fight night 3, etc) that DO NOT fully function. Anyway...

I have heard of locator services that replace xbox live. If you ever used such a thing it would get your 360 banned if you tried to return to xbox live. I've already set my gold account to not renew (for the first time in 5 YEARS), and I'm not sure if I will. Call it my personal form of protest.

The only game I really want the rest of this year is COD:MW2, and Dust 514 if it comes out this year. Both of them are available on either platform, so I might say heck with it and buy me a blu ray player. With the slims going for 300 (-50 bucks if I don't renew my gold sub), 250 for a blu ray player (with built in wifi and a user upgradable hard drive?!?!) that will play the next two games coming out that I care about doesn't sound so bad. Microsoft is on the verge of losing my business. They may not care, but I've told them all the same.

Ok now, fanboys unite! You can haz teh haloz!

I hear what your saying but the problem for me with PC gaming is the exact opposite.  While you can enjoy older games forever it is newer games that you need to constantly upgrade you PC for or they can't run.  So I would rather pay $60 for a game and replace that in 3 years than to have to pay money to constantly upgrade my PC every year.  It just makes no sense for M$ to not take over Chromehounds just for the free for all play so it can exsist as an xbox live title.  I would understand if the whole war aspect was gone but there is no reason to not keep the Free for all or team play alive.
