Yeah, M$ disabling third-party memory cards is garbage. I can't believe that they would do something like that. They are alienating and infuriating thousands of gamers who don't have the zillions of dollars for M$ 360 storage devices. Let me predict PS3 sales UP first quarter next year?
So, third-party modded controllers are okay, but when a competitor offers a better-quality, lower-price unit than M$ offers, they have to impose their legal mumbo-jumbo in order to push their 360 Monopoly. I know it sounds stupid (or right-on), but that's what they're doing: pushing competitors out of the specific market.
And then they just put some spin on it, like "We're cutting down on modders" or "We're solving world hunger". Yeah, whatever.
I don't have a third-party 360 memory unit, and in fact, I have 2 HDs and 1 M$ MU, but this still infuriates me, because if I would've had a 16GB MU, I could put my Rock Band data on it, and go to my friend's house, and guess what? WE'D BOTH BE ABLE TO USE OUR DLC AT THE SAME TIME!!!! That is one of the biggest and worst problems with the M$ MUs. They need to give us a cable that lets us hook our HDs up to the USB port, so we can use more than one HD at a time.
M$ at least needs to offer some kind of rebate/discount/huge price cut so that this monopoly move doesn't push away ALL of the third-party MU owners.
I hope Datel figures out a work-around to this crap. I hate when M$ does stuff like this.
Major Nelson's blog is not a widely-read (or widely-known, OR widely-cared-about) thing, so when he puts up a tiny blurb about this, that's hardly a fair warning to those who are more worried about saving money than reading some 50-odd-year-old guy's blog about Xbox. Put a message in the dashboard, then watch the forums and Customer Service lines blow up with complaints. This is a jerk move by M$, so they should expect the collective reaction from (most of) the community.
And regarding the Authorized vs. Unauthorized deal, the reason why we can't use external HDs is because M$ has some special encryption or something on their HDs and MUs. So, if this type of memory storage is specific to M$'s storage products, why don't they just keep this tech in-house, rather than allow third-party the tech to develop their own versions of MUs?
The crap in the TOU does not apply to this. We don't use unauthorized storage units to access "the service", we use them for a storage device to contain our data, plus they are affordable and are all-around a way better product than the one M$ offers. Besides, the essential piece to access Xbox Live is THE CONSOLE, NOT THE STORAGE UNIT. You can't hook your HD or MU to XBL, you hook the console to XBL. That's what that means.
Yeah, M$, good move. Allow third-party companies to copy your hardware, then lock them out after four years (presumably) of production. Yet another M$ red-flag for anyone on-the-fence for next-gen.
Halo: Reach---2010 RPG of the Year... I can only hope... Beware: M$ may spend more $$$ on lawyers than on their products.
