Re: netflix on ps3
FYI

The Instant Streaming Disc for Ps3 will be available this friday (November 6th,2009)... so some of our questions about quality and Menu selections,ect... should be answered soon...

I'm actually getting my Free Disc by Netflix tomorrow... but I don't have a Ps3 (maybe this holiday season I will?)

Hey guys, here it is, sorry for the lazy link. As I said earlier, its not special. 360 has a way better UI. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/06/first-footage-of-netflix-on-ps3/

Tongue Tied [:S]

I should have my Netflix disc when I return home tonight.  I'll play with it over the weekend and post my thoughts on Monday.  Smile [:)]

Why do you need a disc to watch Netflix? The 360 just goes straight in.

The PS3 requires a disc to access the Netflix streaming service.  The Netflix app is not integrated into the PS3 like the Xbox 360.

Re: netflix on ps3
The user interface (UI) is has the same menu options as the Xbox but is designed in a slightly different way.  The UI is slightly slower to navigate with.  The UI has larger letters.  If you press down on the control pad, it will give the description of the movie.  This description has large words that can be easily read (as opposed to the tiny font used on the Xbox that makes me squint).  The movie playback quality is the same as that of the Xbox.

So the only two downsides to using it on the PS3 are:
1)  The need to use a disk.
2)  The menus are somewhat slower.

I'm definitely not going to renew my gold membership.

How much slower are the menus>?  I can scroll thru my 150 movie selection  on my Xbox 360 in 10 seconds.... thats pretty freakin fast...  on my Samsung BD netflix player it would take 5 minutes....

Also are there any other menu choices besides your own Q?  thanks in advance... sorry to hear about your Gold status and all (renewel)..

again... I'm not trying to say Xbox is better than Ps3... just want to know the differences...  thanks

Edited:  I re-read what you said and the menus are the same... Guess I need to read slower lol

Re: netflix on ps3
I have been using Netflix since it came out on the 360 (signed up just for that reason) and just received the disk to run it on my PS3 on Friday.  No fanboyism, but I find the interface on the 360 better than on the PS3.  The picture quality also seems to be a bit better on the 360, but not by much.  On the plus side for the PS3, I have six different accounts on my PS3 and each user is able to put in the disk and use my Netflix account.  On my 360, since I am the only gold member, I am the only one who can utilize the service.

I did, and I'm back.

As already mentioned, the menus are slightly slower (like navigating a DVD / Bluray menu) as opposed to the smooth transitions of the integrated Xbox 360 app.

I do like the layout of information for each video on the PS3 disc app.  The information is all displayed on one single page as opposed to the numerous "windows" the Xbox 360 app uses.

The most important factor is obviously video quality.  I watched the first 30 minutes of the same movie (The Air I Breathe) in "HD" on both consoles.  Each time, I directly wire-connect each console to my (refreshed) cable modem, bypassing my router.  While both consoles told me I was receiving an "HD" stream, the Xbox 360 picture quality was far better.  The difference I could see was actually surprising, considering I prefer my PS3 for media purposes because it typically delivers higher quality (PC streaming, Divx support, DVD upscaling, etc.).

For me, the integrated Xbox 360 Netflix app is far superior to the PS3.  It loads faster, navigates smoother, and provides better video quality.  The PS3 disc app is great for those that do not have an Xbox 360 (or Xbox Live Gold).  For those of us that do, the integrated Xbox 360 Netflix app is the obvious choice.

ive owned my ps3 for about 4 years now and its great having netflix for FREE on it. i bought a 360 elite a couple weeks ago for my wife and what a bummer to find out that it will cost to use that feature even though she already pays netflix a monthly charge. cant imagine what xbox was thinking about trying to charge there customers for something the other guy is giving for free. and yes the setup is pretty much the same and picture is the same. you do need a disc to use it now but by next that wont be necessary. this will make a big difference at christmas when people have to make up there mind on which system to buy, hmmm, lets see buy xbox and pay for netflix or buy ps3 and get it free, cant imagine which one most people would choose. like i said it wont affect me because i have a ps3 but its kinda of chicken sh*t for xbox to pull that. this is just another way that sony gradually conquers the market. they give up something now then takes over in the end. the same way walmart does.

Re: netflix on ps3
After having Netflix on PS3 for a little bit now, I will have to say that it is actually the weirdest version of Netflix yet. First off, it's on a disc, which makes it awkward but hey, I didn't have to pay for the disc or be a specific member on PSN in order to run it, so I'll let that slide.

Going into the service, the best way to describe it is to think like this: I have 150 movies in my queue. You have to press down on the control pad 150 times exactly (for some reason, you can't hold the stick down and it will go through the movies...) to get through the movies. Thankfully, they have a quick scroll, but it's assigned to the L2 and R2 buttons, which was odd coming from the 360's LB/RB setup. Still, getting to movies takes about 2-3 minutes. I found this incredibly slow compared to Xbox 360's 10 seconds through 150 movies.

Aside from scrolling, everything take a good amount of time to load compared to 360's Netflix. Images for the boxart takes around 20-25 seconds, scrolling with the quick scroll too much can make it freeze for 10 seconds. Oddly, when it comes to loading, Joystiq is right on the money with HD films loading faster than SD films, and rewinding is a major hassle on SD, when it is no problem on HD films. For picture quality, the 360's Netflix streaming seems to present stuff in HD or SD way better than PS3's Netflix because you can see some glitches in the video, especially when it has a black background.

Overall, For a first try, this is pretty good until we can have it installed on the PS3. However, regardless of the first try, this is almost a year later now from when Netflix was introduced on 360, and it seems like it borrowed style only, not quality.

but without the xbox live gold you cant watch netflix. point is without paying out money to xbox your not going to be watching netflix on your system. unlike ps3 giving for nothing. and if you dont think that sony is going to match xbox for picture quality and  smoothness of operation your wrong. after all blu-ray did win, didnt it. these companies all try to do the same thing, eliminated the competition. thats how sony was able to win the hd video war. there like walmart, whos offering new release dvd,s now for $10.00. no one can compete. i just wish xbox would offer netflix for free, no gold membership needed.  again, i dont use the xbox my wife does, so i really dont know yet what fetures ps3 has that xbox doesnt, unless you pay for it. i know xbox has more games but it, in the past, has a lot more problems. i read somewhere that at one time xbox had a 50% failer rate opposed to ps3 3%. i personaly like xbox dashboard much more than ps3. picture seems the same, but then i only have a 37" samsung hd lcdtv and might not be big enough to see a difference. who knows maybe xbox will get enough complauints about ps3 givig netflix for free the will follow suite.

I don't understand what Blu-ray (or the "format war") has to do with the picture quality of Netflix streaming.

 hotrod351 wrote:

I could not agree more.  Hopefully the presence of the PS3 Netflix app will motivate the Xbox team to include the Netflix app with Silver memberships.  If so, it will probably not be anytime soon.

 hotrod351 wrote:

That pretty much summarizes the past few years.  If you want to play video games, the Xbox 360 is the best choice.  If you want reliable hardware, the PS3 is the best choice.  However, hardware issues are not a primary concern with newer Xbox 360s.

 hotrod351 wrote:

That was a non-scientific (flawed) survey performed by Game Informer.  The actual failure rate of the Xbox 360 is somewhere around 18% (pre-Jasper chipset), which is still poor but hardly the end of the world.  As older models are removed from the market and replaced with the newer models, that 18% is gradually decreasing.

 Oh my God.

I am like you I have a PS3 and 360 Elite. The PSN is getting better but compared to XBL it still sucks!! I gladly pay the 60.00 a year for my XBL account. Yes the PSN is free but there is so much more stuff to do on the Xbox that it is worth every penny for XBL.. The video quality on XBL is better then the PSN but what do you expect from a free service. I use my PS3 for Blu-rays and everything else is on my Xbox.

There is a reason why PS3's are still around 10million units behind the 360. Just because something is free doesnt make it better. Oh and there is a rash of hardware failures now happening to the PS3. Hell my Brand new 20 gig I bought in 07 broke after 100 days. The warrenty was up after 90 days so I was sol and purchased a used PS3 because I didnt feel like dumping another 400.00 for a new pos.. I have had my Elite since it first came out and I also owned a early 06 model Premium that they both have never giving me any problems..

You may not be paying for Netflix twice but I am.  I don't play games online.  I never used Xbox Live Gold until Netflix came to it.  My wife and I decided to pay for gold so we could stream netflix.  I still do not play online games on the Xbox (or PS3 for that matter).  I wasn't paying "for gold".  I was paying the gold fee for netflix.  Now that I have the netflix disk for the PS3, I'm going to let my gold membership expire.  It ends in January so I'll keep using my Xbox for Netflix until then since it's a little faster.  But after the membership expires, that additional speed isn't worth $40 a year that I pay.  By the way, why do some people pay 60?  I bought my membership through Amazon....you guys are chumps.  :)

In your situation, a Gold subscription would be a waste of money.

If you did not already own a PS3, I would recommend buying a Roku (or similar) dedicated media device to stream Netflix to your television.  Another alternative would be to purchase PC software like PlayOn to stream Netflix directly from your PC to your Xbox 360.

Both of the above options would be cheaper than paying ~$50 / year for Xbox Live Gold, considering you have no actual use for any of the Xbox Live Gold features.  Of course, video quality is still superior using the Xbox 360 over any of the above methods, but not worth the cost of a Gold subscription.

I can say that hear at Netlfix, we love the Roku. Its by far our second favorite streaming device! However dont jump on the PlayOn bandwagon yet, I've heard rumblings in the office, that Hulu, and us might cut our ways for them at PlayOn to stream from our sites, for real, no joke. (I own playon software so I will be bummed.)

To the posters who purchased gold just for Netflix, dont do it again! Get a Roku, you can stream, and its just a nice experience without having to pay the extra money!. Plus holidays are coming, and numerous DVD and BluRay players will now have Netflix streaming support!

To the other poster, the one with the numerous PS3 posts, about it being free and better. Well, as part of the team who helped make the apps/cd's for instant viewing I can personally tell you, the PS3 version doesnt hold a candle to what the 360 app can do. and BTW? Who ever said our app was going native on the PS3? I've been with Netflix 2 years, never heard that in any meeting. And I'd kind of know, so Im interested what source or site that was on, and who they talked too...Thanks.

Good to know.  I also use PlayOn, but mostly for podcasts and other various plug-ins.  After being spoiled with the Xbox 360 Netflix app, watching Netflix through PlayOn like nails on a chalkboard.

I must have overlooked that statement earlier.  That is definitely something that needs clarifying.  If Netflix and Sony are planning on releasing an integrated Netflix app for the PS3, I would love to know.

I will absolutely not stop my Xbox Live gold account just to enjoy Netflix on Playstation 3. There is many available reasons to enjoy both systems whether for games, movies or media applications, reasons which can be different to each consumer/user, and each is in their right to hold onto those reasons. As for me, I truly enjoy the Xbox Live experience over the Playstation Network, but I have and do use both.

I love playing 1 vrs 100, the Facebook on the 360 is something that my wife will be on all the time ( will probably have to get another ( 60.00) XBL account for her on my Xbox Pro), We dont twitter but its cool that its there, and that whole FM.com thing they will have will be bad quantum singularity. I will be able to stream music from my Xbox and wont have to have my CPU involved with it anymore. My God you are complaining about less then 4.00 a month!! First off, I will address the "I'm not cheap like you" comment.  Since when is being frugal a bad thing?  If I can spend 40 dollars on Xbox Live or 50 dollars for it, I'll chose 40.  If you would rather pay full price instead of buying throu Amazon, does this mean that you pay sticker price on a new car or on a home purchase?  If you see an Xbox selling for 300 dollars or an xbox selling for 300 dollars and you get a 50 dollar gift card, do you buy the former?  Why is spending less to get the same a bad thing?  You make it like I'm doing something bad, you're the chump throwing away money that could go towards a game.  I'm the smart person paying less.

Now that you understand that you are not good at personal finance, let me explain to you that I own a PS3 slim.  The slim uses less electricity than the regular PS3 and and my Xbox 360.  Now that that's out of the way, where did I complain about paying 4 dollars a month?  What I said was that I'm not going to throw away good money to have an "online" experience that I don't use.  This is as it should be, I don't pay for services I do not use.  The only reason I had Gold was for Netflix.  I literally never signed up for or paid for gold until Netflix was released for the 360.  Now that I can use my PS3 for Netflix, I'll save my 40 dollars a year.  At the least, that's another game I can buy each year.

A previous poster mentioned buying Roku since I do not use my 360 for anything other than single player games.  I would rather just use my PS3 to stream Netflix since I already own that.  I don't really want to buy a device that duplicates the features of something I already own.  I wouldn't go out and buy another Blu Ray player since I already own a PS3 for instance.

How long have you owned you PS3 and your 360?? If its a PS3 slim then it is probably what 6 months old?

I use to think like you. I went from a PS1 to a Xbox in 2004. Hell I went from a Sega CDX to a PS1 in 2002. I guess I am older now and making alot more money then when I was in the Navy and really want the best that is out there. If there is a great BR player that puts out better picture and sound then the PS3 I will be getting that. I can hook my CPU up to my tv and watch Netflix off my CPU with no need for a Xbox or PS3. But the picture sucks and its slower Just like I can watch them on the PS3 for free but like everything else on the PS3 it doesnt have the same quality as the online service as XBL.

Like I said before I use both of my systems for what they are best for. I am not going to buy a regular dvd when there is the same movie on BR, Just like I am not going to watch a netflix movie on my PS3 when the overall quality of the movie and the speed to play it and surf the movies is faster and better on the Xbox. To me 50.00 a year is worth watching unlimited good quality movies! Hell I would pay 50.00 a year for only that feature. If that makes me a chump then so be it. There are over 20 million chumps like me on XBL.

Just think instead of spending 300.00 on your PS3 you could have 5 years of XBL coverage ( 40.00 times 5 years= 200.00) and be able to buy 2 single player games like Fable 2 and Borderlands.. I think you are a chump for spending 300.00 on a PS3 to watch Netflix!

Wow Chumps huh? I am not cheap like you and enjoy using both my 360 elite and PS3 for what they are strongest for. PS3 for Blu Ray, and 360 for everything else. Your PS3 probably uses 4.00 worth of electricity an hour!

Me personally I would just go buy the 300.00 Xbox. Unlike the PS3 the Xbox with a free 50.00 gift card or say like the sale Walmart had with a 199.99 xbox with a free 100.00 gift card would be sold out by the time I got there or there will be such a long line that I wouldnt want to wait around for it. I would let people who normally wouldnt be able to purchase that xbox get it. If that makes me a chump then I have no Idea what that makes you.

Re: netflix on ps3
Look dude, I'm tired of arguing about this.  You obviously see things differently than I do.  For me, I'm not going out and buying a new TV just because a better one came out.  I'm not going to buy a stand alone player just because it's better (how exactly?) than the PS3.  I'm not going to go buy 7.2 surround sound if I already have 5.1.  I'm not going to buy a new computer every year because it's better than my old one.

I understand from your post that you like to have the best of everything, who doesn't?  I understand that the best does not stay the best for long as new technology constantly replaces old.  As such, I see no reason to buy a stand-alone BR player when the PS3 works great as one.  I see no reason to spend money on an Xbox 360 Gold membership when the only thing I use gold for is free on the PS3.  When I was buying Xbox gold memberships, I saw no reason to pay full price when I could pay less.  Why in the world would I pay full price for something that is discounted somewhere else?  If I go to Walmart and they're selling a console with a 100 dollar gift card and Target is not then I buy the console at Walmart.  Amazon has the membership for 40 dollars with no tax and no shipping.  Why would I pay MS 50 dollars directly?  Why are you paying for it that way?  I would guess most people don't know that they can get the Amazon discount but now that you know, why would you chose not to buy it there?  You seem to have some sense of "being too cheap" or something that I just don't understand.

I just wanted to point out that the "QUOTES" used above are not correct.

Just a heads-up for anyone reading the above exchange.

I agree that I dont buy the Most up to date CPU because all I use the CPU for is for internet. You response to that will probably be Why even have a CPU? You can surf on the PS3 for free!! I use my CPU because it is faster and more user friendly then my beloved Blu Ray player. I didnt know that you can get a Gold membership for 40.00 on Amazon. If I remember when my year is up I will renew it with Amazon if not oh well.
