Adding more sharing hackery that I went through
If you find that your PC will detect your XBOX after you hit the "Test Connections" button, that just means that the SSDP traffic isn't getting through. You can restart the SSDP discovery service by going to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> SSDP discovery and right clicking it and restarting it. I think going through Network Setup Wizard probably restarts all of your network services so this too should get restarted.
If the "share my media" option doesn't even come up, you might need to run the network setup wizard as I think it means WMP11 can't find a network to share on, for some odd reason.
If the PC refuses to detect the XBOX you might want to check a few things starting with your firewall. http://forums.xbox.com/7734613/ShowPost.aspx details the correct ports to open on your firewall.
If that doesn't work, you should probably check your XBOX's ip address to make sure it's valid. You can do this by going to the System Blade and selecting network settings. If your XBOX is on a router it'll look something like: 192.168.X.Y where X is your subnet number and Y is some number assigned to your XBOX between 2 and 255 your gateway should be 192.168.X.1. If your gateway is 0.0.0.0 your ip address doesn't look like 192.168.X.Y then you've got a problem.
You can (likely) fix that by manually giving your XBOX an ip that is on the router. You should check your PC's ip address first by...
1) go to start -> Run
2) type "cmd" in the window that comes up
3) type "ipconfig" into the command prompt window
you'll see something like
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.<subnet number>.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
On your XBOX manually punch in an ip thats 192.168.<subnet number>.(some number between 2 and 255, but not the number your PC has). Use the same subnet mask and the same default gateway.
For your DNS servers, manually set your primary DNS server to the default gateway. Test your media connection and hopefully everything will just work at this point.
Another possible problem (though extremely unlikely) is that your PC
subnet number and your XBOX subnet numbers are different. This could
mean that your PC and XBOX are on different subnets, at which point
they wouldn't be able to see each other. You can fix this by manually setting the ip of your XBOX so that it's on the subnet of the PC.
Of course, if your XBOX ip is fine, you should probably try a reboot of the PC.
Can't see media that you have? Did you add any media folders when you had WMC2? Well, you need to readd them in WMP11 by right clicking library and selecting "add to library..."
AFAIK, WMP11 will only share out MP3, WMA, WMV, and JPEGs to the XBOX, any other media is not enumerated by one or the other, if your files don't have those extensions, you won't be able to stream them to the XBOX. Also, you can't just trick the XBOX by renaming a divx avi file to wmv (it'll show up but it won't play), you need to actually reencode the video.
Also, rolling back to WMP10/WMC2 didn't work for me, so I wouldn't advise trying it unless you're trying to frustrate yourself. WMC2 didn't work... at all. It wouldn't even start. This is after trying to install WMC2 after an uninstall of WMP11 and a system restore to before I installed WMP11.
Dude! You saved my life! Well, not really, but at least my sanity! I tried the SSDP Discovery thing and it was disabled, enabled it, and went to WMP11 and it found my 360! Thanks Shunsoku, you are THA MAN!
