While playing GTA IV my Xbox 360 broke down, it is now dead. The error code is E74, Microsoft does not know what it is. We all spend Hundreds even Thousands of dollars on our 360 consoles so you think Microsoft would make a console that could last for more than 1 year. I just bought a new 1 year membership to Xbox Live for 49.95 and two new games Frontlines which sux don't buy it and GTA IV which is the best game ever and I can't play them now because my Xbox is junk it might as well be a anchor for my boat, but it's not even good enough for that. I hear the people saying I'm on my 3rd Xbox, but honestly you should not have to spend that much money too have fun. I have three accounts on Xbox live, MECHWOLF55, xBpMxTaNkKiLLa, xXSFDXxBlAstER, $150.00 a year and now I have to spend $350+dollars for a new Xbox360, I might as well buy a PS3 because it at least plays BluRay discs and might last for more than one year. If Microsoft is listening PLEASE STOP RIPPING US OFF WE ARE NOT BILLIONAIRES LIKE YOU HELP US DO NOT HURT US. And if you cut off my Xbox Live account because of this, I WILL SUE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ive got a feeling that last update a couple weeks ago had somthing to do with the 360 coping with gta. But just a guess

An E74 Error code is: There is a 90% chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. [this thingie] In rare cases it is a problem with the GPU."

Hey sorry to here that but if your 360 broke down look at how hard u played it. When the first ps2s came out i got one and played all the time and in a year i had to go get a new one. Its all how much u play and how long at a time.

I think you have too much time on your hands. Find something else to do while you're waiting for your 360 to get repaired.

e74 error code has nothing to do with the chip, or the av cable.
the only solution is to get the gpu and surrounding area resoldered.

the towl trick might work, but thats luck.. basically it MIGHT reball the gpu if it gets hot enough. doubftull though.
the pennys only make the board flex and make enough contact with the case to keep the solder intact, momentarily.
cleaning off the compound and replying new compound might work, it didnt for me though. but it couldnt hurt.

i had e74 too.
i just got my box back today, i had my friend fix it.

M$ said that my warrenty had expired, which is a lie.
they wouldnt fix it, so i did it myself.

its funny cuz the supervisor said that no one in the entire UNIVERSE knows how to fix them besides them..
i was like, wow, you are a *** idiot.

u.s. law prohibits the use of lead in childs toys and such.. i.e. xbox 360.

their lead free solder doesnt stand well against heat.. if you dont play that much, then its not a problem.
but if youre like me, its a major problem.

a cooling fan is the only thing that can really prevent this, besides playing less or getting it resoldered.
i made one myself when i started seeing signs of failure, but it was already too late.

Well that really sucks my xbox just broke for the 6th time so its being repaired yet again. i play gta on my ps3 and it runs great. i hope it plays just as good on my 360 and doesnt break it. Gaming software can cause problems with the console because a small percentage of each game is downloaded to the X360 itself (for Achievement recognition, saved games, etc). If these files are corrupted during the transfer, they can definitely cause problems and this is what has happened to many people who have problems with one game freezing when all others play fine.

The solution to that is to delete the game from the X360 and try reloading it onto the console.

An E74 problem like the OP has is not caused by this though. That's one for the MS support team and the best thing to do is send it in and tell them that it's the 3 Red Rings of Death.
