I'm more than a little disappointed to have spent $10 on this only to discover that I can't play with my friend who lives in Toronto because I live in the States... This has to be some kind of error/joke right??

That and the crummy 30 second window they give you before they start the game with AI.. There should be a "No AI" option.

For anyone that hasn't figured this out, BTW, you can extend this 30 second window on a Quick Match by waiting until the countdown is at 1 or 2 seconds and selecting a different picture for your avatar. This starts it over at 30 seconds. I've been using this a lot to extend the 30 seconds to 4 or 5 minutes before I give up and just play with the stupid AI. I have gotten to see a lot of other people this way.. Sometimes a couple at a time.
