Re-designing a CPU core to a smaller die-area helps achieve several of these goals.

  • Shrinking everything (a "photomask shrink"), resulting in the same number of transistors on a smaller die, improves performance (smaller transistors switch faster), reduces power (smaller wires have less parasitic capacitance) and reduces cost (more CPUs fit on the same wafer of silicon).
  • Releasing a CPU on the same size die, but with a smaller CPU core, keeps the cost about the same but allows higher levels of integration within one VLSI chip (additional cache, multiple CPUs, or other components), improving performance and reducing overall system cost.

Pretty much the things in red above. When they do a die shrink it usually means it'll use less power to run that particular part, which in turn makes it run cooler. Sounds like one of them would have the CPU and GPU on one die similar to the APX 2500. Which should mean a savings in power, cheaper manufacturing costs (as I wouldn't think you'd need seperate manufacturing lines for the CPU and GPU and you're using less material) and a cooler running 360.

Remember my above post is just from what I understand, and I could be completely wrong. If anyone has a better understanding, by all means step up and edgeumacate us. Thanks.

OK, as someone who works for the company and in the department that will actually help build this item, I think I'm certified to confirm all of the above as correct. Valhalla WILL be a CPU/GPU integrated processor.  It also will be built off the same technology we use to build supercomputer processors.  Now, granted, smaller die=more transistors=less wafer cost=low power...but you still have challenges at smaller dimensions with leakage and cross-talk between the devices.  Also note that the size "savings" is most likely getting eaten up by plopping down a monster of a GPU.  So you have to do fancier and fancier things with the process to reduce these risks along with knowing how best to integrate GPU and CPU on the same chip without eating up more silicon than you bargained for.  Also note that lower power doesn't ALWAYS mean "cooler".  More "turned on devices" on a smaller footprint could result in some runaway thermal effects that need to be managed by more efficient packaging and heatsinks.  These babies go through all the motions with regard to this "full on" effect to see how long they last before they ship.  So you can bet this next chip gets the same treatment...but with a GPU with transistor logic going and CPU with all its logic firing away as well at the same time on the same eentsie bit of silicon...expect the heat to come with it.

Hope that wasn't too painful of anedeumacation.

Edit: oh, please note, new game in 'da house this weekend (OrangeBox).  My excellent work on Valentine's Day appears to have paid off.

Congrats on the new game, and thanks for your input on the subject of the new chipset. I'm still pretty green in regards to all of this. I only started looking into such things last summer when I got my new PC, and started looking into upgrade options. Very cool stuff.

Hey guy's and gals. I just recieved this message.

"My bro wants to let ya know, your on inside xbox cuz your friends with mo moss. Way to go... : D"

So if you go to your main blade on your 360 you'll see they have the "Gamer Spotlight-MO MOSS" on there.

Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008.

He"s a husband and father in St. Paul, Minnisota, who leads a rabid pack of parents around the world who play games. Get to know MO MOSS, one of the founders of GamerDads.

Gamertag: MO MOSS

UB started a thread in Gamer Parents in your.....honor?  Anyway, I asked Trixie in her Inside Xbox thread what the @#&* she was thinking putting your mug out there for millions to see?  I think you're the first of her interviews to get sent out on XBL.  I thought it might put a way to link to your interview, but you did get a GamerDad shout out.

Very cool, you should be proud!

Hello all! I hate jumping into a conversation and changing direction but I have been sitting on this message from one of my friendlist buddies (Unreal Butcher) and I am just now getting around to coming to this forum. In any case, I was just interested in joining the gang at Gamerdads Live! My profile bio pretty much sums me up for the most part. If you guys will have me I would love to game with some fellow gamers that share a familial commonality and a passion for games!

All I can say Is go MO. Guys get ready to welcome all the new members. If we thought our recent influx was crazy just wait. By the end of the week we might gave too many new members to keep up with. Can't wait to meet the new guys. I love their reaction when they feel free and comfortable to be themselves and just have fun. Its nice to know we can bring that feeling to other gamers. I do a lot of volunteer work with kids and communities so this is right up my alley. I love helping people one of the reasons I joined the military. Don't forget MO APF2k8 we gotta break the tie. You shouldve seen the game I played last night. I was losing by 4 points with 8 seconds left on the clock in the 4th qtr. 1st play incomplete pass. My last chance with 89 yards to go I lob it to jerry rice he catches it with 1 hand jukes the saftey and uses his speed to outrun 3 defenders. I win the game and it goes down as my greatest victory ever.

Re: GamerDads 2.0 (aka Gamerparents 2.0)

My youngest celebrated her 6th birthday today.  We had a good time with rented space at the gym/pool/track.  10 kids with cabin fever but very good manners.  We all had a great time.  As you can tell, she was gifted with Viva Pinata Party Animals.  I played 2-3 rounds with her on it.  It's a lot of fun actually.  It's like Fusion Frenzy 2 without the annoying commentary.  It's also a gamerschwore love fest as I kept getting cheevers for stuff I DON"T do!  Like for not shooting at anyone in a race or NOT taking shortcuts...wow.

My daughter needs a bit more practice with races but she loves the challenges.

I don't think its popularity just high up on his friends list due to alphabetic sorting. and the whole tuff mode thing with new members wanting in the clan.
