Who is the best driller to use?
I'm going for my Russia achievement and can get to around 2600 meters using Mr. Driller's dad (forget his name) but he drills super fast.  All the other characters seem way too slow for me.  Anyone with the achievement have a tip on who they used?

I prefer the robot. I managed to get him to about 2900 before he decided to swan-dive into the path of certain death. The ability to survive one block hit and relatively low air consumption are pretty handy.

I used the robot to get to 3000 meters. The fact that he can take two hits and has more air than other players only gets better when to take into account items such as bubble shield, full air, and air expanders.

However, if you are going to go for the 5000 meter achievement, you will most likely have to switch to a faster character. When you get too far down, the blocks fall so fast that the robot's speed is not quite up to the job. Also, the 5000 meter achievement is in quest mode, so you may find yourself in a bind when the quest is to beat the stage without using an item, or beating it in a certain amount of time. Remember, if you lose a quest, it is game over.

The Robot seems like such a sweet deal, but the reality is that the difference between Horinger-Z (5 star air rating) and Taizo (1 star) is about 11 seconds of air.  This is on the initial speed of the infinity stage, so it will be a bit more on the lesser/slower stages, but keep in mind that it only gets faster and that 11 second advantage gets lesser and lesser.

I love Taizo, but I noticed that a lot of the better Japanese players seem to favor the dog (Puchi?).  He is more adept to rapidly inane downward drilling due to the fact he's better able to escape brown block "bowls" due to his double-jump technique thing.

Haha, been there, too. It was at 2950 meters when my trusty robot got smashed to bits. :)
Then I reverted to the default character Susumu immediately after that and for whatever reason the first game after
the robot desaster I beat the Russia stage with Susumu.

Right now I try to beat the Hawai level in quest driller mode. It's so hard - I can make it to 2000 meters but then I start making stupid mistakes. I switched to the dog and it works really well for me. ...for the first 2000 meters at least :)

Hey, if anyone wants to get the multiplayer achievements right now let me know. So that when the multiplayer patch is finally available we can play for fun instead - those achievements should be very, very hard to get in a 'legit' way.

How do you know that? I have to say I've become pretty fond of the dog, too.

Taizo and Puchi are my two favs. It depends on what I want to accomplish during the game. Get to the bottom as fast as i can, or take it slow and collect as much stuff as possible.

Japanese arcades.  I'd watch a lot of people play the game, and they'd get really, really high (low?) depths using Puchi.  Of course, it was no Mr. Driller Online, but Mr. Driller G (the arcade one) has the same stats/abilities and bonuses, more or less.
