Reporting Guide (Forums, Phishing, Username, and XBL)
Parts:

1- Xbox Forums Reports

2- Report Phishing

3- Report Inappropriate/Offensive Usernames

4- Reporting Users from XBL

-------------------------------

1. Xbox Forums Reports

Now this is a bit more complicated than the other types of reports. When you are making a report try to be as descriptive as you can in the title, and add the minor details in the post. If it is a single post in which you are reporting you don't have to paste what the user said inside your report. Also, the mods will automatically be linked to the thread, so you don't have to include one in the report.

A good report

Title of Report: Attacking other users - Multiple posters involved

Post: After the second page it becomes just a big flamefest (check pages 3 and 5 for the worst).

The post explains that there's more than one user making the offending posts, and describes where those posts are located in a multi-page thread. This will help out the mods a great deal, and give them more time to take care of other reports.

A bad report

Title of Report: Spamming

Post: :(

This report makes it harder on the mods. The thread may already have been reported, but they still have to open up the thread to find that out. A title/post such as "Spamming" could mean many things from one user spamming the forum, to the whole thread consisting of spam. Changing the smiley to a description of your title would have made the report a bit better.

--------------------

Now after you have made your report please do not:

-Go back in the thread and post items such as "reported" or the lock icon.

-Quote a user that created an offending post. Your post will have to be deleted along with his if you do.

It's best just to stay clear of any of the bad posts.

2. Report Phishing sites

You can report phishing sites on all browers using this link (same as FireFox's report system).

You can also report through IE7 using the following steps:

1. Open the site, but do not fill out any fields

2. Click on Tools>Phishing Filter>Report This Website

3. You will now be brought to a Microsoft safe-site. Select the language you speak, check the box, and hit "ok".

4. You will then have to fill out a verification box, and will be given you confirmation code.

That's it, but make sure that the site in which you are reporting is not a Microsoft or another known site which does infact use Windows Live ID(Like Bungie.net)

3. Report Inappropriate/Offensive Usernames

Currently there are two ways to report an offensive/inappropriate username:

1. You can report it through your console. Just click on the players name from your recently played list, and file a complaint on their profile.

2. You can go this page on zune.com: http://social.zune.net/reportabuse.aspx

Now, you must sign in with your live ID in order to file the report, and as of now it is only for users in the United States and Canada.

Supposedly they are working on a system similar to Zune's for the xbox.com users.

4. Reporting users from Xbox Live

Yes we know there is a team of people that manage xbox related issues, but we don't want to spam their inboxes. You'll have to report through your console using the "File Complaint" feature. Action may or may not be taken and will not be immediate, so it would be best to just mute the player and/or block communications.

Don't lie about your report either. Someone may have beaten you badly in a game, but that is no reason to file a complaint on them, and you are just causing a hassle for the team.

Last thing on this subject: The rep system doesn't contribute to a ban. It's just there mainly to scare users, so don't fret if someone gave you bad feedback, or you're reaching 100%.

Nice guide. Yes [Y]

One thing of interest that isn't in there is that JD Buck suggested putting the gamertag of the user being reported in the subject line of a forum report. It's not relevant with the type of report you used in your example (entire thread instead of a single user), but I think it's something worth mentioning again.

This is great information all together, but I disagree with what is quoted. I disagree with the DO NOT part, I agree that it could worsen the thread. I am not calling you wrong, just giving my own opinion on the topic.

If I report something and 40 other people do as well, thats a whole lot of reports to go through as a Moderator.

If I put that this thread has been reported and for the reason why, the other members don't have to report it again. It MAY worsen the state of the thread, but it was going down that route anyways. Yeah its not an improvement on the thread but its easier for mods not to see 50 reports on 5 threads.

This is something that JD Buck said in another thread HERE linked to page 2 of the thread:

 JD Buck wrote:

/snip....To kind of add on to what I was saying earlier about multiple users reporting the same thread.  Sometimes I see one post after another with people saying 'Reported' after a bad thread or post.  Those all come in individually listed to us.  Since most of the names I see here are familiar and are people I trust to report bad stuff when they see it, after one of you states you've reported it, assume they did so we don't get a flood of reports for the same offense.  Does that make sense?

I know alot of people are hesitant about it, but I honestly don't see why. It was a suggestion by a Moderator, by no means is it a standard.

@Hometown: I know, but that's why it would be best if most users(I know it will never be all) would be more descriptive in the titles of their posts. We would then avoid the possible situations in the thread, and the moderator wouldn't have to go through all the reports.

Re: Reporting Guide (Forums, Phishing, Username, and XBL)

I totally see your point. Absolutely agree with it as well, but as you said it won't happen. It would be great if there wasn't anything to report at all, but thats wishful thinking and we know how that goes.

I understand the hesitation behind it and sometimes I don't even want to put reported for fear of adding fuel to the fire, but sometimes if you know that the thread is gonna get reported by multiple people its probably a better situation to say hey its been reported and its not necessary to report any further. Good examples of guaranteed reports are any type of Phishing Scams, advertisings, most comparison threads.

But its up to each individual. I think your guide is a good compilation of everything out there, and has already helped one person. It would be nice if they had this and many other FAQ's thrown at them during initial sign up. Heck, even make it to where they are automatically in the My Forums section for everybody.

All, in all good work and thanks for not getting defensive.

I just re-read your guide and noticed that you did mention that usernames should be in the subject lines of reports when applicable. I thought I had read the entire guide, but I must've skimmed over that part. Sorry.

Re: Reporting Guide (Forums, Phishing, Username, and XBL)
Personally, I'd rather have 5-10 extra reports to dig through, than one person post "reported" in a thread. If the person who gets reported sees someone posting "reported", they tend to get upset and then there's a lot of cursing and quoted cursing (why people?). So it just takes that much longer to clear up all the cursing, if the thread is still salvageable.

Opening and reading a report doesn't take that long. Opening, editing or deleting a handful of posts however, takes much longer. Which of course, could explain why us mods never seem to be around. Stick out tongue [:P]

Again, this is my own opinion and not anyone elses.

Nice job, Burton. I hope many read and utilize what you wrote here.

I will personally refrain from putting that I reported anything unless its absolutely necessary. Perhaps thats what JD intended when he posted that, but its great to get another point of view from another Moderator. Thanks again for the insight! Big Smile [:D]

Kidding, nice work Burty. I can't say that I understand the pressures that the ModSquad goes through with regards to actioning reports, but if this makes even a small amount of difference, then all the better!

Like PK was saying, there isn't a right or wrong way.  I personally like to see it when someone states they've 'reported' a thread.  I 100% agree with PK that it may put fuel on the fire and get some negative comments, but conversely, I've seen people do the opposite and back down knowing a mod will see the thread/post.

Many reports that come in are from posters who never posted at all in the offending thread.  That's just as good too.  If some of you want to put yourselves out there and state you've 'reported' the thread, that's awesome.  If you don't, that's great too.  Either way, we rely on good posters to take the time to report stuff.  That's how the overwhelming majority of problems get fixed is by everyone helping out.

Thanks to all that care.

Yep, having the usernames and forum in the title would also let the mods know which reports could be skipped over.  Good guide Burty.  Yes [Y]
