I give up on beating single player
It's like the AI just knows what I'm doing.

God even on the easiest setting I get ***.

I haven't played too much of single player, but from the games I have played it seems like you can throw the cpu pretty much all day.

Pretty much. I got the 200,000 point achievement with Hanzo by piledriving everybody up to Mizuki. Then I died on Gen An, right before I got to her.

Also, use Genjuro and abuse his giant jumping slashes.

I finsihed it on eazy with Ukyo.  This boss is SIMPLE compared to Amakusa and the boss in SS 4.

Re: I give up on beating single player

I finally achieved this today for a whopping 30 gamer points.  One of the easiest ways is doing the following with Haohmaru:

1) Obviously set the game to easy for the best chance.

2) For the first few characters (and even many after that) just keep doing jumping fierce slash followed by standing fierce slash.  Anytime the opponent is dizzy do low fierce into jab uppercut combo.

3) Use lots of his 6-hit move for good block damage

*4) This is one of the most important tricks in the game and works against every character, including Kuroko and Mizuki - anytime the computer blocks a jumping fierce or roundhouse attack you can land a low strong or forward (middle button) slash or kick.  You can litterally do this over and over.  If the computer is in the corner however it does not work as often since the corner gives priority to the one defending the air attack.

5) When all else fails and you're low on health and it's too scary to try the above tactic, back dash far away and throw the whirlwind.  Hopefully the computer will jump over it and if they do perform an early fierce uppercut.

6) The computer will ALWAYS go into block stance when Haohmaru does his pouncing slash (dragon punch joystick motion with kick).  Use this to your advantage.

7) Haohmaru's super can often be used over and over for a maximum of five attempts and good block damage.  Also often the computer will end up getting hit by the second or third attempt.

8) This doesn't always work but at the start of the round jump toward the computer and while in the air perform the 6-hit motion and press the button right when you land.  Often the computer will not block and you will get anwhere from 80% to 100% damage.  100% is practically guaranteed against Earthquake and also works against him the best.  If the computer falls down on the first hit it is because they were either crouching or trying a low attack.

9) Kuroko and Mizuki are the toughest to fight using all of the strategies above because of their seemingly random AI.  Perhaps the one that works best is #8 (and as mentioned #4 works everytime).  Just keep doing the 6-hit move over and over.  Mizuki tends to either perform her confusion ball or super ball while you're coming down from the 6-hit.  If she does the confusion ball you will get hit but just retreat to the corner and try again when the confusion runs out.  If she does her super the ball will miss everytime so while you're coming down from the 6-hit make sure you're entering the motion again and press the button right when you land to do another 6-hit.  Her previous super will still be coming at your from behind but as long as you're hitting her with the next 6-hit the ball will pass through you 90% of the time.

*One thing to note, if you're trying to perform another 6-hit or any special move but you've moved behind the opponent in the air and are facing the wrong way you must enter the commands as if you were still on the other side.  This is a confusion statement so let me know if you need clarification.  Basically while in the air whichever way you're facing is the way you need to pre-enter commands for execution the second you land.  The game only recognizes which side you are on a few frames after you land, not when you're in the air.

I didn't even know there were difficulty levels in this version. I beat it on normal. ;)

BTW, the computer falls for Earthquake's low AB attack (hard slash) 24/7. With continues, you can basically cheese your way through with EQ, no prob. I actually got the achievement for winning every round with him.

I should point out that some characters are very resistant to this technique. It's hard to get all the way through without losing a round. Sieger is not your friend.

Yeah, I'm playing with Galford (who I used to play with in the arcade) and I can barely get by like 2 people.  The AI blocks EVERYTHING and even if you block you try and hit, forget it, you're getting thrown.  Even like in the air, you're coming down for an attack and then nope, you get thrown again.   Rough.

Re: I give up on beating single player

I got pretty far on the default settings, i had about 3 fights left to go. But i failed Sad [:(]

After that i just switched it to easy mode with infinite continues, i got to the final boss without using one, but had to continue quite a few times when i got to her.

Damn the A.I is cheap lol, the final boss spams special attacks and throws.

The funny thing is i got my perfect round achievement against her, despite her being by far the hardest battle i'd fought.

The main thing to do against Mizuki is to jump backwards and AB slash. She'll often run or teleport into it.

Stay away from her and stay in the air if possible.

Also, if she hits you with the move that reverses your controls, and she does it again, let it hit you. It takes very little life, and it sets your controls right again.

Re: I give up on beating single player

I just picked up the full game yesterday, and I had a hard time playing this on normal. This is my first real time with Samurai Shodown, so I suppose I should've expected it.

Then again, I put it on easy and played as Galford. I got to the 12th match and had to fight myself. He was not kind. I got tired of it and quit.

Now that I've access to a movelist however... I just might beat it this time around. Or I'll play more Oblivion.

AB slash is your friend. The computer will gladly throw a projectile so you can jump over it and slash them.

Personally I think that a post round eight or so Hanzo or Jubei is considerably harder than Mizuki.

I tend to agree with this.  Both ninjas (not Earthquake =) ) can be very tough, as well as Charlotte!

Yep.

Hanzo is very difficult because he moves around so quick.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having trouble.  Used to play it on previous console platforms, and
in the arcades and don't remeber it being as ....frustrating.. not saying it wasn't challenging back in the day,
just don't remeber it being this bad.

Right now I'm stuck on level two. (yes, two..go ahead and luagh) I usually get hanzo, or earthquake.

Actually, you can. It's not on the title screen inside the game, it's in "Settings" (or whatever) before you pick single or multiplayer.

I'm going for the Perfect Samurai achievement and have a question. Does pressing start to have a 2nd player join in to prevent you from losing a round disable the achievement?

I still had life left, so it didn't count as a loss, but I still didn't get the achievement after beating the game without losing a round.

Forgive me if this was already discussed but are there any cheats for the single player? I agree abou the A.I. Just like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat 3, the a.i. just knows exactly what you are going to do.

Re: I give up on beating single player
Just got The Perfect Samurai achievement tonight after at least 100+ attempts (many of them making it all the way to Mizuki) since the game hit XBLA.

Heres a suggestion while using Earthquake. When fighting Mizuki jump in with his down+A+B (the same button you use to do his ever-so-useful ground-chain attack that the enemy usually falls for), as soon as you land, combo into crouch A. Even if Mizuki (or any other enemy, but its especially useful for her, considering its safeness) blocks it, you'll be safe. She is locked and will usually retaliate with a standing or crouching slash, if she blocks the crouch+A from a Jump+AB (During jump down+AB Earthquake puffs his stomach out mid-air, doing a belly flop. The move is very good and crosses up the enemy reliably and will beat out most air moves consistently).

As soon as your crouch+A has connected (doesn't matter if it hits or is blocked) be blocking low. Punish whatever attack she throws out, if applicable (obviously you're gonna have to take the chip damage if she throw out a projectile at close range).

Be sure to space the jump down+A+B so it hits on the edge of Mizuki or else she'll throw you before the crouch+A can come out.

The reason this is so effective is that it puts you in perfect range for your crouching down+A+B attack to hit all 3 times for maximum damage after Mizuki has attempted to counterattack you after shes blocked your crouch+A.

Also if you use Earthquake's POW move (forward, full circle foward C+D), be aware that Mizuki does not lose her weapon, even if you hit her with it. Its application against her is kind of limited, considering the tenseness of the fight and the off chance she might hit you mid-POW will throw things off majorly, considering how much damage even her weakeast attacks do. Use it with caution, only if you have the lead and she doesn't seem to be falling for crouch+AB.
