Widescreen in BC problems?
I'm having a hard time with Destroy All Humans on the 360.  The game is coming up in a 4:3 box, but is meant to be widescreen.  Since the TV recognizes the 360's 720p output, it's already locked in full screen mode, so I can't stretch the image.  Everything is all scrunched up.  I'm having the same problem with Scarface.  Am I missing something?  Is anyone else having this problem?

Yes, i've got the same problem. One question though, are you running the game trough an VGA or component cable. I've got this problem with this game and Grand theft auto 3.

Component.  I had GTA3 running before the December Update, but I haven't checked it yet.

Re: Widescreen in BC problems?
I tried to play Thief: Deadly Shadows last night and had the same, exact problem (although that game has other problems with the steam and fire showing clearly through walls).  I'm certain that I was running that game just fine before, so somehow this latest update has borked some 720p games.

Re: Widescreen in BC problems?
I think it's actually a problem that's caused by the FMV sequences - the indicia screen that appears as the game loads looks like it's actually in widescreen, then everything shrinks on the horizontal as soon as the movies kick in... Indifferent [:|]

Re: Widescreen in BC problems?
Here is my guide to Backwards compatability, it answers alot of questions including this one:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Supertoast GT's Xbox 360 Backwards Compatability guide!

First off: "How do I get these xbox games to run on my 360, and why are there so many problems running them?"

First off, I'll explain how this process works. I won't  go into big detail so it can be understod a bit better.

Now on a standard gaming system such as the Wii, GBA, PS2/3. The older system's games can be run easily because there is a chip, or chipset on the system containing the some of the older hardware (or something similar.) So games can play exactly as they where.

Now wev'e hit a bit of a snag on the 360. What happened? Microsoft diddn't buy the ligal rights to it's Xbox hardware. which means they can't manufacture the 360 with a chunk of Original Xbox Hardware. This means that games have to be emulated. That means running old software on new hardware it wasn't made for. In basic terms, this is done by mimicing the old hardware in software. This is very hard to do, especialy since the xbox and the 360's hardware pretty much have nothing in common. As a result, there can be alot of crashing, sound , video, and gameplay bugs. along with some random stuff you can't discribe. Some games have so many bugs/issues, that they just can't be played untill things get iorned out. so not all games are on the BC (Backwards compatability) list.

How to run Original Xbox games:

Check here by looking on the top bar (the one with your gamertag on it.) and hit support/Sysem use/Xbox360/backwards compatability/play original xbox games, there you can get some faq's, and instructions on how to download or burn a disc with the emulators, also you can see what games are currently supported. check back often so see if they updated the list. generally it get's updated every 3 to 5 months.

But if you have Xbox Live, play an xbox game while signed into live, the console will then ask you if you want to update, hit ok, and you are done. if your game is supported, it will be playable.

Tips for optimal original Xbox play:

One of the best things you can do to make things work better, is to run the game only at settings the game supports. Running it in high def may look nice, but you'll never keep the game's aspect ratio right, which means black bars or stretching. Running a game at it's normal Tv setting will also help preformance.

You can see what the game supports by checking the back of the case. But really, every game will tend to work better at 480p/i. Though it supported it, the Xbox wasn't really meant fot HD yet. it was in a time when HDtv's where very uncommon and the prices where incredibly high...well they still are I suppose...

Save often if you are playing a game you know will crash often. if the game has additional save slots, such as fable, use them as backup saves in case it crashes while saving, currupting the file.

The bugs in these games are very hard to figure out and deal with. the BC team is working like crazy to get every game on the list and working normally.

HD guide: for VGA monitor users:
480p/i: 640x480 Pixels. interlaced: standard TV.
720p: 1280x720 Pixels
1080p: 1920x1080 Pixels

Issues known by me with my games so far:
Halo 1: none found yet!

Halo 2: Ghost images in campain and multiplayer occour very often and tend to ruin gameplay. not playing backwash does not fix it.

Half Life 2: none found yet!

Super Monkey Ball deluxe: Runs perfectly, right up to it's random crashing...

Mercenaries: does it Like monkey Ball, runsperfect, but crashes randomly.

GTA: San Andreas: Cars blink on and off when blown up, white dots appear at the top of the screen at random times, buggy gunfire, horn, and explosion sound cuttofs. the occasional crash, though very rare and hard to duplicate.

Soul Callibur 2: Nothing yet!

Forza Motorsport: Slow intro video playback, no biggie. that's it.

Fable, and Fable TLC: random sound screech glitches, and a slowdown every now and then, mostly with alot of enemies on screen. nothing big.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory: Online co-op unplayable, instant disconnect.

Star Wars Battlefront: nothing yet!

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Crashes, unusual control issue when a 360 user hosts a system link or Xbox Live Game. Sounds like a networking issue.

MK: Armageddon: nothing yet!

Destroy All Humans!: nothing yet!

Sonic Mega Collection Plus: flawless, which is very surprising considering it's an emulator, on an emulator. that just seems ironic and inefficiant. lol

Re: Widescreen in BC problems?

Yeah, I'm having the same problem to. the only fix I see that works for this is to put the 360 in 480 mode so then your tv will strech it, but since its a wide screen game that is being squshed it looks normal when you strech it out.

kinda a pain in the a$$ but it works. thats the only game i have to do that with.

I prefer the screen to say 4:3 just so the quality will stay nice and fresh. Versus just stretched out and nasty.
