Is it just me...

I know these forums are a bit dead but maybe someday, someone will see my post.

Is it just me or is this nothing like you remember? I played this game on PS1 years ago and literally sat in front of my TV untl it was finished. It was and is the best game I have ever played to date. So last night I am at the video store and decided, "why not? I want to relive some of those great gaming memories" and rented it. I get home, fire it up and am playing through Peru now. I find that I don't remember anything about this level, nothing, zero, zilch. Keep in mind that I have done absolutely no research of this game other than knowing it is a remake of the original.

Did they change this game at all, other than updating some of the tech? Did they redo levels or add levels?

I am disappointe I don't remember Peru at all.

I don't think it's a remake. It's just another Tomb Raider adventure...

I may be wrong but from everything I read, this is a remake of the original Tomb Raider which is why it names Anniversary. The T-Rex battle is definitely from the first one.

Again, I am not claiming to know everything other than this is what it is said to be.

You probably dont remember it because the original game was very claustrophobic. No open areas, huts looked like rocks with doors.

In anniversary, you can see sunlight shining in from overhead, huts look like huts, you can actually tell there is a village in some areas. In the original the T rex fight looked like it happened in a large cave but this time you're in a large open field.

If you listen to the commentaries throught the levels the devs talk about how with todays technology they could actually make the levels look how they wanted it to look back in the day.

I remember there being the t-rex on the first one. I just didn't realise it was a complete remake. Cool :)

I never really got into TR1 but I would remember every level if it was TR2 :D

Re: Is it just me...
This is entirely subjective, but I think it was the right way to do it.  The first one was simply amazing, true.  Best game I had ever played as well.  This one really is a tribute of sorts.  You can copy levels, copy events, copy themes, but you can't copy that first great experience.

That being said, I love Anniversary, and the graphics and new puzzles pull me in completely.  Keep in mind that i played TR when it came out on every platform (Sega Saturn first!  then PS for the "graphic improvement", lol).  How can you make the game exactly like the old one?  Everyone already has it, or has access to it.  I would have enjoyed a straight port of the original onto the XBOX360, but I really loved the new/old experience.

Pretty much what the above guy wrote, it's really more of a tribute then an update.   I hope they do the same with TR02, it was always my fave in the series.

Totally agree !!!!
First Tomb Raider I played, and I felt quite like you...I couldn't get away from TV until it was finished, lol...
and obviously, was the best TR ever made! no tutorial, no instructions on where to go, no clues, no nothing, only you by yourself! God, that was amazing! and remember firts TR was launched in 1996 xD

Yes, totally worth playing this Anniversary game, if you loved first TR that much, as me...of course is not like the one launched by 1996, but game hasn't been changed, it's the same stages, and the same puzzles, but with today's graphics...and the best thing is you can see in some pics how game changed from that ersion, to this one...Gorillas and Crocodiles were made out of squares and triangles then, lol

There are some changes, but the reason you don't recognize the levels is because of the degree of improvements in graphics and thus in environments. As you collect rewards, you'll get comparison screen shots between the original and Anniversary.

Yeah the game isn't very clean in that sense. In my opinion this gives it a certain charm :)
