Have you ever seen the ridiculously high scores on the Hexic HD leaderboards and wondered to yourself, “What the…?” If so, then you probably thought the scores were hacked. And if you did, you’re wrong; the scores are legit. Believe it or not, they were achieved with single combos, and many only took a few hours. But how can this be possible, especially with such low stats?

For a long time, achieving high scores in Hexic HD was rather tedious work. Advanced players would collect six multipliers of the same color and surround them around a black pearl. This resulted in a measly 1,120,000 points. One day asetta mysteriously posted a high score of over a billion! Many people at the Xbox.com forum were left shaking their heads in disbelief, as he had very low multiplier and bomb counts in his stats. After much discussion, theorizing, and testing, the idea of creating a single combo with as many pieces as possible arose. These combos became known as Massive Multiplier Combos (MMCs). The first designs were small, but they soon became worth billions of points. Since then, MMCs have gotten bigger and better, but unfortunately much more complicated. This guide will help you understand how MMCs work, how to properly design them, and the basics of building them.

How Do MMCs Work?

As with everything in Hexic, the larger a cluster is, the more points you will earn. When a multiplier is used in a cluster, the score is doubled. If more than one multiplier of the same color is used, the score begins to increase exponentially. For example, if you made a cluster containing three multipliers, your combo would have a xVALUE (times value) of 2³ or x8. Therefore, your goal in making MMCs is to incorporate as many multipliers as possible into a single combo. MMCs are only really effective once a total of 16 or so multipliers can be clustered. So the question is – how do you get so many pieces into one combo?

Make Your Pieces Fall

The player can make clusters of just three to five pieces when using the cursor to rotate them. The only way to cluster enough pieces is to make them fall beside and on top of each other. There are two different ways to do this.

The first and most common method is to use a multiplier and bomb to remove pieces from the board. When a bomb is diffused by clustering it with a multiplier and a normal piece of the same color, all of that color is removed from the board. This color is often called the “filler” and can be any of the seven colors. When designing your MMC, you will want to arrange your pieces so that when all of the “filler” is removed, the pieces that were above the “filler” fall and cluster with pieces that were underneath the “filler.”

The second method is one that requires no bomb to trigger. No Bomb MMCs (NBMMCs) often remove pieces by creating starflowers and clustering them between the MMC pieces so that the top pieces fall and cluster with the bottom pieces. While this method is the quickest and easiest, it is also the most limited and scores rarely exceed one billion. This method is best suited for beginners.

The Rules of MMCs

While Hexic HD is an excellent game, it has many frustrating quirks. Sometimes MMCs that look like they should work will not because of the way the pieces fall. Other times, MMCs split because of the placement of certain pieces. You cannot just throw a bunch of multipliers together and expect a good MMC. In order for you designs to work properly, you will need to follow these rules.

All of the pieces in the main cluster of an MMC must be the same color.
This rule is self explanatory. The multipliers and normal pieces in the design may be any of the seven colors, but they must all be the same color.
The MMC cannot contain a cluster of same colored multipliers.
If there is a cluster of three of more MMC multipliers, it will be scored as a normal cluster of multipliers. You will only receive a few hundred points and it will break the MMC.
An MMC cannot create any starflowers.
Creating a starflower in your MMC will greatly reduce your score. This is because it breaks the MMC’s connection with the rest of the cluster.
To be included in the combo, each piece must contact two other same colored pieces.
If a piece comes in contact with only one of the same colored piece, it will not cluster.
A piece cannot be four places high in the MMC if it combos with another piece in the column to its right.
If a piece is four pieces from the bottom of the MMC and combos with a piece to its right, it will break apart from the MMC and not be included in the main cluster. Not only will it break away, it will also create a low xVALUE that may present problems. However, raising the MMC with non-combing pieces so that there is a piece four places high from the bottom of the board but less than four places high in the MMC will work. It should be noted that if a piece is four pieces from the bottom of MMC and combos with a piece to its left, it will work.
All falling pieces must fall the same distance to be included in the MMC.
If all of the pieces do not fall the same distance, they will cluster at separate times.

Single Piece Columns

If at all possible, you should aim to include at least two pieces of your MMC in every column. However, sometimes it is impossible to avoid creating a column that contains only one piece. If you must, there are some things you should know about single piece columns.

Columns with a single piece that is falling will always work.
Columns with a single piece that is static and on the side of the MMC will always work.
Columns with a single piece that is static and not on the side of the MMC will often break the MMC. There are five instances of this problem.

Instance 1 - To the left and right of the static piece, only one piece is falling. This is the only instance that works 100% of the time.

Instance 2 - To the left, one piece is falling; to the right, two consecutive pieces are falling. This fails around 50% of the time. It creates a low xVALUE but the main xVALUE of the MMC is unaffected.

Instance 3 - To the left, two consecutive pieces are falling; to the right, one piece is falling. This fails around 50% of the time. It splits the MMC into two parts, resulting in two xVALUEs.

Instance 4 - To the left and right of the static piece, two consecutive pieces are falling. This fails more that 50% of the time. It splits the MMC into three parts, resulting in three xVALUEs.

Instance 5 – The static piece is on the bottom. Above it to the left and right, two consecutive pieces are falling. This fails around 50% of the time. It splits the MMC into two parts, resulting in two xVALUEs.

Scoring Priority

Hexic has a scoring priority from left to right and from top to bottom. This means several things. When a combo is made, Hexic starts looking for that combo in the top left and ends in the bottom right. The scoring priority influences the way xVALUEs are taken (see Bonus Triangle MMCs, SFMMCs, and BPMMCs). Not only that, but it can also affect how reliable certain clusters will be when in different spots of the board.

General Tips for Designing

Use qbix's Hexic Board Builder to design MMCs.
Start with the cluster you want and then add the “filler.”
Use two “filler” pieces to fit more multipliers into your design.
Avoid using three “filler” piece stacks.
Avoid using stacks on three pieces in any way.
Look at designs from all angles for new ideas.
Build up with your designs.
Use stars to lift up your design and “snake” the MMC around them.
Combine parts of MMCs that have already been proven to work.
The ratio for normal pieces to multipliers is around 1:3. If yours is larger, you are using too many normal pieces and not enough multipliers.

MMC Scoring Formula

So how many points is your newly designed MMC going to get? There is a formula just for figure this out:

5 x (level) x (multipliers + normal pieces - 2) x 2^ (number of multipliers) = MMC Score

Example: Level 7, 18 multipliers, 5 normal pieces

5 x (7) x (18 + 5 - 2) x 2^ (18) = 192,675,840

You will not want to figure this every time you design a new MMC, so it is recommended that you download the latest MMC Calculator (Excel spreadsheet).

So now you know the basics of MMCs and how they work. You have learned that making a cluster with as many multipliers as possible creates a xVALUE that will exponentially increase the score of the combo. What you may not know is that this xVALUE will not only affect the main cluster of the MMC, but special clusters around it as well.

Bonus Triangle MMCs

The first type of special cluster that the xVALUE of your MMC can affect is the bonus triangle. A bonus triangle is created when a cluster of any three multipliers is made. This will create a base score of 100 x the level. If a bonus triangle is made at the same time that the MMC clusters, it will usually take the xVALUE of the MMC. Therefore, the formula for each bonus triangle is:

100 x (level) x 2^ (multipliers in the MMC) = Bonus Triangle Score

Bonus triangles are often created by clustering an off colored multiplier with multipliers that are already in the MMC. It is possible to make more than one bonus triangle too; you will receive the formula score for each bonus triangle that is made. Bonus triangles are easy to identify. For example, if you have five red multipliers surrounding a green multiplier, you create four bonus triangles.

When the bonus triangle takes the xVALUE of the MMC, it is really taking the lowest xVALUE that is closest to its top-left (remember Hexic’s scoring priority). Usually this xVALUE is the xVALUE of the MMC. However, sometimes a low xVALUE is accidentally created (refer to the rules) and the bonus triangle will take that number resulting in very few points. If a low xVALUE is created to the right of the bonus triangle, it will not be taken due to Hexic scoring priority. An easy way to tell if a low xVALUE will be taken is to imagine a vertical line going down from the center of the bonus triangle. If there is a low xVALUE is to the left of the line, it will be taken. If there is a low xVALUE to the right of the line, it will not be taken.

There are three rules you should know about bonus triangles:

Bonus triangles can usually be anywhere as long as they cluster at the same time as the MMC and do not break the MMCs connection.
Bonus triangles cannot be in the first column if they are above the MMC.
Bonus triangles do not have to include multipliers from the MMC. In fact, they do not even have to contact the MMC.

Here is a detailed example of how to make Bonus Triangle MMCs work:

Let’s take YS23 Aoki’s 20 multiplier design. We see that there are four potential spots we can place multipliers to create bonus triangles. We now have 8 bonus triangles in our new design. Finally, let’s calculate the score.

5 x (level) x (multipliers + normal pieces - 2) x 2^ (number of multipliers) = MMC Score

5 x (7) x (20 + 8 - 2) x 2^ (20) = 954,204,160

100 x (level) x 2^ (multipliers in the MMC) = Bonus Triangle Score

100 x (7) x 2^ (20) = 734,003,200

734,003,200 x 8 = 5,872,025,600

954,204,160 + 5,872,025,600 = 6,826,229,760

Here are some bonus triangle MMCs that have been proven to work:

Starflower MMCs

The second type of special cluster that the xVALUE of your MMC can affect is a cluster of starflowers. The idea is that if you cluster starflowers at the same time your MMC clusters, the starflowers will take the xVALUE of the MMC. Designs that use starflower clusters are called SFMMCs. The formula for each starflower cluster is:

[(number of starflowers clustered) – 2] x 2,500 x (level) x 2^ (multipliers in the MMC) = Starflower Cluster Score

The larger the starflower cluster, the more points you will earn. It is also possible to have more than one starflower cluster; you will receive the formula score for each starflower cluster that is made. Unfortunately there are some limitations to SFMMCs.

You are limited in the number of ways you can make your starflowers fall. There is only one known way that will always work; two starflowers falling on top of one starflower. This can be expanded to include four or as many starflowers as you like. What is important is that you cannot have a stack of two starflowers falling, or a stack of two static starflowers; these rarely work.

When the starflower cluster takes the xVALUE of the MMC, it is really taking the lowest xVALUE that is closest to its top-left (remember Hexic’s scoring priority). Usually this xVALUE is the xVALUE of the MMC. However, sometimes a low xVALUE is accidentally created (refer to the rules) and the starflower cluster will take that number resulting in very few points. If a low xVALUE is created to the right of the starflower cluster, it will not be taken due to Hexic scoring priority. An easy way to tell if a low xVALUE will be taken is to imagine a vertical line going down from the center of the starflower cluster. If there is a low xVALUE is to the left of the line, it will be taken. If there is a low xVALUE to the right of the line, it will not be taken.

There are four rules you should know about SFMMCs:

Starflower clusters work best when clustered on top of the MMC.
Starflower clusters do work on the bottom of the MMC, but can break the connection of the MMC above it. Also, the lowest xVALUE created will always be taken.
Starflower clusters cannot be in the first two columns only. They can however be in the first three.
Starflower clusters do not have to be touching the MMC. They can be separate if necessary.

Here is a detailed example on how to make SFMMCs work:

Let’s take fda4ever’s 18 multiplier design. We see that there two potential areas we can create starflower clusters. We now have two clusters of four starflowers on top of our new design. Finally, let’s calculate the score.

5 x (level) x (multipliers + normal pieces - 2) x 2^ (number of multipliers) = MMC Score

5 x (7) x (18 + 8 - 2) x 2^ (18) = 220,200,960

[(number of starflowers clustered) – 2] x 2,500 x (level) x 2^ (multipliers in the MMC) = Starflower Cluster Score

[(4) – 2] x 2500 x (7) x 2^ (18) = 9,175,040,000

[(4) – 2] x 2500 x (7) x 2^ (18) = 9,175,040,000

220,200,960 + 9,175,040,000 + 9,175,040,000 = 18,570,280,960

Black Pearl MMCs

The third type of special cluster that the xVALUE of your MMC can affect is a cluster of black pearls. The idea is exactly like SFMMCs. If you create a cluster of black pearls at the same time your MMC clusters, the black pearls will take the xVALUE of the MMC. Designs that use black pearl clusters are called BPMMCS. The formula for each black pearl cluster is:

[(number of black pearls clustered) – 2] x 25,000 x (level) x 2^ (multipliers in the MMC) = Black Pearl Cluster Score

BPMMCs are great because they allow you to create an enormous amount of points in just one MMC. However, there are reasons you might not want to do BPMMCs. First, they end your game since there is a cluster of black pearls. Second, BPMMCS are almost always associated with two “filler” piece designs in order to include more multipliers. And third, they are very likely to freeze the game. There are steps you can take to increase your chances, but sometimes they will freeze for no particular reason.

Like SFMMCs, the larger the cluster of black pearls the more points you will receive. Unfortunately, the more black pearls you have on the board, the more likely your game is to freeze. Therefore, you should only have one cluster of black pearls. Unlike SFMMCs, you aren’t quite as limited in the way you can create clusters. Black pearls can fall in stacks of two and have static stacks of two so long as the number of pieces falling is no greater than three. If the number of pieces falling is greater than three, then you can sometimes split the “filler” pieces to cluster four black pearls. Still, your black pearls may only count as a cluster of three. The type of black pearl used does not matter. Another thing to remember is that having your black pearl cluster occupy three or more columns will increase the chance of freezing.

When the black pearl cluster takes the xVALUE of the MMC, it is really taking the lowest xVALUE that is closest to its top-left (remember Hexic’s scoring priority). Usually this xVALUE is the xVALUE of the MMC. [(number of black pearls clustered) – 2] x 25,000 x (level) x 2^ (multipliers in the MMC) = Black Pearl Cluster Score

[(3) – 2] x 25,000 x (7) x 2^ (21) = 367,001,600,000

1,908,408,320 + 367,001,600,000 = 368,910,008,320

Building Your MMC

Perhaps you’ve designed your own MMC, or maybe you’ve picked a design from this guide. Now you’re going to want to make it in the game. Keep in mind, MMCs are not for beginners. Building them requires a superior understanding of the game and plenty of patience. There are several different styles for building MMCs and with more experience you will develop you own. These are only the basics of building MMCs.

Use a Grid

It is virtually impossible to build an MMC without a starflower grid. A starflower grid lets you to move any piece wherever you like, allowing you to lay the MMC out layer by layer. There are two types of grids you can you: the 4x4 Grid of the Master’s Grid. It is recommended you use the Master’s Grid as it minimizes the number of mistakes that can be made.

Develop a Bomb Defense

With the grid, defending against bombs becomes much easier. It is necessary however to develop a streamlined bomb defense if you plan to last long. This can be done by storing colored pairs for each possible bomb or using a multiplier defense. As you gain more experience, you will find a method of defending against bombs that suits you.

“Mining” Multipliers

Earlier it was stated that building MMCs requires patience – lots of patience. You will need to make hundreds of combos before you receive all of your multipliers. Typically you receive two to three multipliers per bomb round. It can take several hours to collect all of your multipliers taking into account that there is a 1/7 chance you will receive the color you need. As you collect your multipliers, it is best that you store them toward the bottom of the board.

Setting up the MMC

Build your MMC row by row. Some players like to do this as they get the pieces for each row, and other players like to collect all of their pieces and then build the MMC. How you do it depends on your playing style. In between rows you will need to remove stars from the grid. This is known as “plucking” and is typically done by using an extra star and an inverted black pearl. Experiment until you find a way you like.

Closing Comments

As you can see, MMCs are very complicated. But they take what was already an excellent game and turn it into the best Xbox Live Arcade puzzle game available. Because of MMCs, Hexic has the replay value of no other game. Keep in mind, the designs that have been shown here are neither the biggest nor the best. There have been much larger MMCs created and it is up to you to discover them. Please do not let all of the rules and information discourage you from designing and building your own MMCs. You don’t even have to follow this guide if you want. In fact, you are encouraged to test new ideas and break these rules. Even after three years, new methods are being found because of the clever Hexic community that continues to push the game to its limits. Use this guide as your gateway into the advance scoring methods of Hexic, but do not dwell on these rules forever; they will change. Good luck with you first MMC and new high score!

Thanks Beer, I think you may be the only one that realizes it's been sitting on the forum for nearly 3 months. I can't believe Stoffs hasn't put it on the site yet, that's just ridiculous. It's here now though, so hopefully some new people can put it to good use. Also, I don't know if anyone noticed it, but I think I've posted the easiest 1.4 trillion possible in the guide.

I noticed it also and it is bad *** but I have been preparing myself for the an4l r4page the middle class is going to get for the next four years. It was good to see some one other than me on hexic this past week, but with all the new games (fallout 3 FTW) that are out I can fully understand.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. It was really fun making this guide but it was a pain.. I had to test alot of new stuff to make sure everything was correct. And the pictures to FOREVER to make in GIMP. I'm glad everyone enjoys it though and I hope someone will be able to put it to good use. I hope the games aren't wiped, I'm pretty close to your 18 billion MMC JDog, and also for your sake! I can't imagine how it would feel to lose 500 billion!
