Played Games Mini-Reviews
I posted a kind of idea about this in a thread for deleting Gamerscore, but it was a bit off-topic there.

It would be cool if Microsoft added the ability to go throguh your played games and add Mini-Reviews to each game on your games played list.
Nothing fancy, maybe a little 5 Star ranking option and a 100 character text field.

This would not add a significant amount of size to a user's Profile.  If a person owned every game available in stores, and arcade game from marketplace it would be a bit over 0.5MB assuming they used the full 100chars for every review.

It would be a cool way to get to know what people think of the games and what kind of player they are in general.

As an example someone looking at my profile to see the games I have played would see my gamescore in the game and the additional information like in the examples below:
Need For Speed: Carbon - 2 Stars - "Rental, Didn't like the controls, found game boring."
Oblivion - 5 Stars - "Loved it, bought all the DLC.  RPG Goodness.  350+ hours."
Crackdown - 4 Stars - "Fun game, I liked getting beefed up and going on rampages.  Wished Sniper Rifle was more useful."
GTA IV - 2 Stars - "Let down.  Preferred SR and SR2"

Thats actually kind of a cool idea.  Just to add on though, they could have check boxes for Own It, Don't Own it.

Thanks, glad someone liked it.  eck, I posted it as a separate thread because soeon said it was a good idea in the delete gamerscore thread, but I guess not good enough to garner support.

Its the 1st I've seen, and its a great idea. They could have a star rating system with boxes for prewritten reviews as a option like this.
Awesome Must Buy
Good Rent 1st
Ok Could Have Been Better
Average Rental Or DL Demo
Not Great But If Your A Fan Of The Genre
Bad Gameplay Good Idea
Total Crap
Each box could even have a brief description feild explaining why you felt that way about it.

I never claimed to be the first to come up with an idea for reviews.  I do think I have detailed out a decent implementation plan that would use minimal resources, storage, and overhead.  Thus allowing for it to be useful across the Xbox live service in a timely manner without undue burden to Microsoft's server system.

You do and its a great idea to get more input on.I always look for opinions or reviews on games from friends, this would make it alot easier.Browsing through friends profiles for reviews would seem more accurate to me than any mag or website just because they are who you will be playing with and friends don't sponsor publishers so they will cut to the chase if its good or bad.

I too would like to see what my friends think about some of the games they have played or stopped playing in the past.  Given the small footprint in the format I have proposed this would add less to people's profiles than many games do even if they play and use the full size for commenting on every Retail, and Arcade game ever made.  Many times you ask a friend what they thought of a game and get a response of don't remember it was rental.  Imagine how much more useful that information would be if they left a mini-review on their tag of the game (not that this would be required but I can see many people using it if it was available).

I support this.

You can get user reviews in loads of places round the net. Nearly every major gaming centric site, as well as loads of shopping sites.

Having a platform wide system where its all in one place, with ratings from some 15 million+ people would go a long way to getting a true picture of what the average person thought of a game. Then you could collate the buzz words/phrases put into people's reviews and display them in a games info etc.

Though er, publishers that get less than stellar reviews on the service may not be too pleased about it.

And that just might be the rub.  Publishers probably wouldn't be fans of an easy to use, easy to aggregate review system by actual gamers.

Like I said its the 1st I've seen, mostly because I wasn't actually looking for a thread on this topic. It just caught my eye when I looked under Active Topics. You can post a hundred links to other threads on it,but this is the 1st I've seen on it.Its a awesome idea and if we at least try to keep posting in it,then it may just last a little longer than the ones that failed to get noticed. So keep posting and keep this thread in the active topic area, its easier for MS to notice Topics on the front page.

I would like to see that too.  Well they're bringing the rating system to the marketplace, but i like the idea of user reviews for games.  two thumbs up man.

Re: Played Games Mini-Reviews
This I can absolutely agree with. That is as long as it does not effect the current System in terms of the "lag" some people experience with the opening of the Guide Button. A nice little 5 Star System similar to the Rep would be nice, I would also like the idea of User Created Comments in a blank field on the Games List.

Two questions though;
  • Would this be a Cross Xbox LIVE Review? For example everyone who has Reviewed or Rated the Game adds to its total Star Rep (the same as a Player Rep but working or more accurately a Thread/ Post Rating).
  • Would the Games "Rep" only be that of one User displayed to another User? For example my Game Review for (just saying) Halo 3 has 5 Stars to someone else who looks at my Copy of the Game because that is only what I gave it.
The Comment Box would also be nice but sadly I would see many people placing Comments that Violate the ToU and CoC. I'm just saying a lot of Players can't even handle their Bio/ Motto Content properly without getting Suspended. Imagine what a Halo 3 hater would put on his Copy of the Game?

I like the idea of also displaying and tracking an aggregate average.  I had only been thinking about it showing the single user rating so if you had looked at my profile you would have seen 2 stars for NFS: Carbon.  I like your idea and addition. It would be nice if it also displayed an average of all ratings; which who knows could be a something completely different so you would see my 2 star rating and an average of say 3.5 stars if that were the average of everyone's reviews.  It could also display that aggregate average on the market place.  Thank you for adding even more usefulness to this idea.

Yes, some people will end up breaking the ToU in their reviews I am sure.  They would end up being just as responsible for their comments in that case as they are with their BIO, Location, Comment, etc.

I like this idea, it would be a great addition.

Also, some way to annotate you've actually completed a game would be great too.

Well, if you were allowed to edit your review you could always put the word Finished or Complete as the first or last word of your reviews.

It would be nice if Microsoft implemented something like this already.  Especially given that all current suggested alternatives (post what games you liked/disliked/stopped playing in your Bio, etc) look ugly as no Carriage Returns/Line Feeds get populated into those fields and thus are hard to read.  Also, if filling those fields with game likes/dislikes, then where does your BIO go?

They could even add a few more single byte items such as check boxes for "Still want to play", "Own/Don't Own", or anything else as previously suggested and with all current Arcade Games on Marketplace, and all current full retail games, plus the expected releases of same for the next year it would still fall around 1mb per profile with full 100 character reviews for every item.

It's a nice start.  It sounds like that will show an aggregate review kind of like the post ratings in the forums here.  I'd really like if people could also look at your profile and see how you rated the game.  I know, never happy. Smile [:)]

Now that I have seen it in actually I really wish I could see how my friends rated things.  Even if I could only see how they rated the games on their Games History.  The aggregate reviews are very damaged at the moment by the fact anyone can rate the things.  They do not have to have played them.  The item does not even have to be out to rate it.  Thus the validity of the rating system is pretty low on the aggregate.  Expect high numbers of Silver accounts to flood Xbox Live from companies and their marketing/advertising firms to rate things up.  Yes, Silvers can rate items as well.  Again I do not have so much of a problem with this although maybe there should have been 2 ratings, Gold and Silver.  I really think they need to fix it so the item has to be out and have been played by the person making the rating.

Just as I had predicted here, the average/aggregate rating system is worthless.  I have seen games that are not even out yet with over 5000+ votes and 5 stars.

So back to the original request, how about letting use have our own mini-reviews which people can see?  How about letting us see how our friends and others rated things when we view their profile?
