NHL 2k6 penalty shot achievement
I don't see a forum for NHL 2k6 so I'm posting here because it is the closest one.

Tonight I got the other four achievements easily, but the penalty shot one eluded me until just now.  I tried to get the chance at a penalty shot, and when I finally got one (it was a 2 player game) I didn't even get to take the shot because I was fiddling with the player 2 goalie controls and ran out of time; I didn't realize I had so little time to shoot.  After that I tried many more times without success.

I looked all around for advice and eventually found what worked for me.  This technique did not require a second controller, although I believe the players who say that having a friend help you would probably get you the achievement faster.  Thanks to dreamcaster from http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-10718.html for the help.

1) First of all, I believe you have to be two men down to qualify for this, though I am not dead sure.  Both times I got a penalty shot, I was.  The instructional video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3KglcMRnLE also says you have to be, as does xfrearsx from the xbox360achievements.org link I gave above.

2) I started a one player game on All-Star difficulty, chose the World All Stars as my team and Denmark as the CPU team.

3) I set the Penalty Shots slider all the way to the right, and same for Hooking, Slashing and Spearing.  I also had the Cross Checking penalty slider all the way to the right, but all the other ones set all the way to the left.  I set Penalty Time at 2:00 (the max) to give my players more time off the ice and therefore a longer time being two men down.  I turned off Offsides and Icing so the game wouldn't stop for those.  For this tip, I do NOT claim that my penalty settings are at all necessary.  Some players have gotten this achievement with ALL penalty sliders set to the right, and other players say you should set them all to the left except the Penalty Shots slider.  I'm just sharing what I did.

4) I turned most of the CPU drone skill settings to minimum and most of the human player skill settings to max.  There is some other setting called "goalie freeze puck time" which I turned to minimum; this setting is under the basic settings.  I set each period to 20 minutes.

5) When the opposition had the puck, I skated around the rink like Nancy Kerrigan's attacker, trying to bash every player I could.  The right stick works well for this.  When I needed to get someone in the penalty box, I would deliberately NOT try to win a faceoff so that the CPU would have the puck.  Doing this, I got two players in the penalty box and was two men down.

6) When I had the puck, I usually skated toward MY goal, and ran into my goalie, which automatically gave him the puck.  Then I let him sit with it so the ref would call a faceoff.

7) At the faceoff I hit A rapidly to win the faceoff and get the puck to one of my guys.  Then I held RT for turbo skating and shot past the wing players and defenders.  When I got past the blue line marking the defenders' part of the rink, I slowed down and held X to wind up for a shot.  I kept holding X and did not release it, the idea was to get fouled while holding it.  There were no players between me and the goalie at this point.  Then I got fouled from behind and was given the penalty shot.  Keep in mind that all this did NOT happen on the first try.  However, I did get the achievement within the first 20-minute period of the game, which is far less time than I had spent trying to get the achievement prior to reading the tips on the above-mentioned website.

8) I got lucky on the penalty shot, I admit.  I skated toward the goalie, first straight, then left, then right.  I didn't use any moves like the deke, I just skated.  As I got very close I held X to wind up for the shot and I released X just as I was passing the right goalpost.  At that instant I thought I had released the shot too late and hit the goalpost, but instead I was told it had gone in, and the achievement unlocked.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I think many people on this forum and elsewhere would disagree with you about achievement points being completely worthless.  In numerous places on the Internet you can find posts of people wondering how to get this particular achievement and finding the advice on it to be lacking.  I decided to contribute my own experience to the pool of knowledge in hopes of helping those who aren't sure what to do next, and there is no forum for NHL 2k6, which is why I posted it on this one.

What exactly do you do with achievement points?  To some (probably many) people, if you have a gamerscore of 100,000 you seem like a more serious gamer than if your score is 100.  With that, you may be able to get more sound advice on this forum because serious gamers will take you more seriously.  So there's one possible "use" of such points.

I think it also deserves mention that collectors often spend good money to acquire items that they will display, and do nothing else with.  Perhaps the gamerscore is something like that: mainly for display, but that alone carries much value to some people and who is anyone else to decry that?

Wow sleep king....well thought out reply. I may have to change my thinking.
However with your thoughts in mind in other threads I have attacked losers who "boost" or get someone to "play" (and quit) 30 (or however many) games for them so they get achievement points. Thats not an achievement at all its simply cheating so that sort of makes them useless. So if all of someones points are legit then I can see your point.
Your particular post is NOT cheating, just saying how to get it. IF I have any problem with your method its that you have to set AI sliders down to nothing to be able to get an achievement. That is a mild form of cheating in my opinion.
Feel free to set me straight.

Re: NHL 2k6 penalty shot achievement
I think you bring up an important philosophical point that would probably have many gamers on both sides.  I understand why you've been displeased about players who use certain methods to get their achievements, whether that involves getting people to purposely lose or quit X number of games, or a boosting method.  I think that M$, going by its rules, would consider some of that cheating and some of that not.

What you bring up is the spirit of achievements.  I think it's fair (and obvious) to say that when M$ developed the achievement system, it intended for achievements to reflect accomplishment by a player playing the game under relatively standard conditions.  So if a player playing a FPS on multiplayer internet mode gets a 1000 kill achievement because his friend let the player kill him 1000 times, yes that would not reflect the spirit of achievements even though M$ probably wouldn't consider that a bannable offense.  If the friend were good at the act he could move around, fire some near misses and make it look as though he were fighting back, and even kill the first player a few times too, so it would be near impossible in that case to know for sure that the two were cooperating for an achievement.

I, for one, consider it cheating when I am playing a local split screen FPS and other players look at my section of the screen, which clearly gives them an advantage.  I bet there are a ton of players who do not consider that cheating and I wish I could change their views.  Sometimes if that is happening then I try to face a wall so that they have a harder time knowing where I am, but I don't think I should have to do that to play a fair game, and that strategy is hard to use for long periods on an unfamiliar map.

While I'm certainly guilty of having altered AI sliders for achievements, I understand your reasoning and why you see that as mild cheating.  Setting sliders down to nothing or at max does make some achievements ridiculously easy to get, which one can argue goes against the original intention of achievements.
