Everything works fine for me following the fix. FINALLY.

On one hand, I can't thank the programmers and engineers enough for finally delivering this to us. I can only assume that since it took so long, it must have been tough to come up with a solution. Thanks so much to any of you who may run across this.

On the other, I feel that the administrators, team managers, and community managers deserve every bit of chewing out that they got in this thread. While it might be understandable for the fix to take this long if there was a significant challenge involved in finding the fix, it is 100% unacceptable for you to have kept us in the dark like you did. You never properly explained to us what was going on or why the problem existed. But most offensively, you never gave us any ETA of the fix until the DAY BEFORE you deployed it. All we got was that "the team was aware of it", which could have been a hardfaced lie for all we knew.

And while I can't thank part of your team enough for finally getting this to us, it does feel a bit awkward to thank you for fixing something that you broke in the first place. If anything, there's a big lesson for the XBox team to take away from all of this. It's just a darn shame that it had to come at the expense of us enduring this problem for two and a half months.

On another note, it is a mighty big coincidence that this fix finally comes along after Gizmodo posted an article pointing out how long we'd been waiting. And if you DO want to believe that the timing was completely coincidental, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you.

I second that! Very eloquently put, DRayKenobi. BTW: Could you give me an estimate on the Brooklyn bridge?
In other words: What he ^ said... Now onto a killstreak in WAW!

You know, there is a topic of compensation that should be brought up concerning this. I don't think anyone in this thread will disagree with the notion that we should at the very least receive a free month of Live. We did have to endure this for two and a half months, so we'd really only be asking for less than half of the time that we had this bug on our system.

Anyone else agree?

Agreed, but it will be hard to isolate who really had problems, and who didn't.

This is just brilliant. I have been trying for an hour now. No chance to make it work. I get the sound when I connect through HDMI but I cannot change the resolution to anything else than 480p. All other settings are greyed out.

Does anyone have a Viewsonic VX2835WM and could you share your experiences? This is really pissing me off big time now. Have been waiting for that crap over a month and now this. Why the hell does NOTHING Microsoft creates ever work as it should!?

I hate to hear that, Chupa. I didn't have a whole lot of time to check mine this morning as I was getting ready for work, so I fear mine may be doing the same. I certainly hope this won't be the case for many of the others as well.

I would say that I'd hope for a XBox Tech Support person to chime in and update us on this issue, but we've all seen how wonderful they've been about that in the past.

I'm not THAT knowledgable when it comes to this stuff, but it seems as if you aren't getting a proper HDCP handshake between your console and your TV. And I think at this point we are all very much aware that this isn't any fault of your own or that of your set. I would suggest trying different combinations of ports or different points in a set up process in which you hook up your HDMI cable. For instance, you might try powering on your console before the set or vice-versa.

Let us know if you have any luck. As we all know, we'll likely just have to support each other on a community basis, because Microsoft sure as hell isn't going to help us out any.

E claimed that he and his team would keep a watch on this thread. I suppose we'll see if he was truthful once he replies or not.

Hi, have updated the xbox today and have still no sound or correct resolutions to choose, use 1280*720 now on hdmi..

I have tried both hdmi port on my LG LCD tv and different cables, my tv is a LG LCD - 37LC2RB, It worked okey until I tried a HD vga cable to get 5,1 dolby, but after that hdmi doesn't work.. the xbox360 takes longer time to boot now than before

Update: with the original cable for component hdtv, the xbox boots directly with 720p, and i can choose 1080i and so on, but not on hdmi.

I'VE GOT SOUND through HDMI and 1080p resolution.

Well it took 'em long enough to patch this problem an I have to admitt that I was pretty annoyed. But at the moment I'm as happy as a child in a candy store.

FINNALY! Mine works also, I'd thank you guys but in all honesty you don't deserve it. You gave us the run around for 2 months (or 3 was it?) You lost a loyal customer is all I know. I'm sick and tired of being scared that my xbox will die everytime it freezes or that the RROD will happend when I turn it on. It's alright to live with that you get accustomed to it but to realize that to a dashboard update can mess up your system like this for MONTHS at a time is rediculus onw everytime I update I have to be afraid to even update the thing. I refuse to support this crappy hardware anymore. I switched to the PS3 at least Sony has the decency to admit that they *** up. (2.40 anyone?) and that they would fix any BRICKED console.

It sounds like the update resolved the issue for most of you, but that there's still a few people having issues.

As Lucky stated, it'd be really useful if people who are still having issues could provide a little more detail about their setup.  Not only what kind of display device you're using, but how it's connected - are you connecting through an A/V receiver?  Using an HDMI switchbox?  Etc.

the fix did not work in my case.

I get audio when the nxe loads, but once in the nxe there is no sound when moving through the menus.

I start a game and get sound during the intro, I begin to play the game and there is no sound.

This all worked prior to the NXE release, then wham, no audio.

After I installed todays update on my elite I started to notice some strange things with my video. I decided to reboot my 360 and was greeted with the E74 error message. I have not had any issues until I installed todays update. I called the support number and they told me that it would be $100 to fix my problem.

Here are all the details:

- Viewsonic VX2835WM 28" Monitor
- Connected straight with the HDMI cable no boxes in between, nothing.
- or connected through the standard analog cable nothing in betwenn again

-->All resolutions are selectable with the analog cable.

-->When connecting with the HDMI cable the system chooses 480p automatically and all other options are grayed out. I tried each and every combination of settings in the Display menu (color spaces and what not) but no higher resolution is selectable. Did reboots, tried the right trigger + Y trick. Removed the HD after boot and re-inserted it...cursed at the console and at who invented it for 15 minutes: nothing worked.

Btw.: I had problems with limited resolution options already before the big update
(NXE <---I am allergic to this term). As far as I can remember I never had the possibility to chose anything between 480p and 1080p (i.e. 720p). But as long as 1080p worked I had no problem with that (even if there was one game who had problems with that if I remember correctly).

Ok, how many months will it take now? There wasn't much pressure to make a patch before as only a limited number of users where concerned. I suppose there's even less pressure to make one now as the problem has been solved for a lot of users.

I am just curious about a thing and I don't know if it has been discussed already: How can something like this happen?

I mean in the previous version this software was working, right? The software has several interfaces for different in- and output sources. Now, as the standards haven't changed (as far as I know HDMI is still HDMI isn't it?) how can you possibly produce a newer version of a software where the said interfaces just don't work anymore? And how is it possible that the developers are not able to isolate the problem? They have the previous version / code and the new one: isn't this just a matter of comparing what was there before and after the release change? I'm not much of a programmer myself so maybe I am underestimating the complexity of the problem here but that's what I do with programs I wrote.

Also we are not speaking of a fully-fledged operating system. The hardware is standardized thus many of the compatibility issues that lets say some version of Windows would have to consider are not a problem. I.e. it's not about ensuring compatibility with 60 different types of graphic cards (different GPUs / different types, sizes and speeds of memory / different bus-widths / different driver versions and combinations / AGP or PCI-E etc.). So if this poses such a problem, similar issues under Windows should be unresolvable.

And if by all means it's not possible to solve the problem: at least give users the possibility to switch back to the previous version, that shouldn't be too difficult either. After all if it's possible to distribute the new version it should also be possible to distribute the old one. I for my part would have nothing against going back - I still have to discover one single advantage of the NXE over the old GUI. I really can't find any. How about you other gamers out there? Do you enjoy your Xbox360 more now that it has NXE installed?

On the contrary NXE for me has brought about changes that reminded me of the transition from XP to Windows Vista. I now need more single actions to achieve the same results as before thus making the change to the new version rather inefficient. But maybe it's just an impression...

I have the same tv and have the HDMI going straight to the tv. I updated and no change. But today I gave it another try and removed the 360 audio adapter, started it up with the Y + rt trigger trick and sound worked.

Now it works every time as it did prior to NXE. I put the audio adapter back in, started it without any tricks and it still works.

Problem solved for me.

BLITZ0ID,

Have you tried doing a display reset of your console display settings to see if that would help?

  1. Remove any discs from the disc tray.
  2. Turn off the console.
  3. Turn on the console.

Note If you are using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, turn on the console by using the Xbox Guide button on the controller. Wait for the guide light to indicate that the controller has linked to the console.

Note Make sure that you use the player 1 controller when you do this. The player 1 controller is indicated by the upper-left quadrant light on the console.
  4. As the console starts, press and hold the Y button as you pull the right trigger.

Note This action causes the Xbox Dashboard to reset the display settings to the default settings. The console then automatically restarts.

I have the same problem as some other users here. Update applied fine, but still no sound or proper display through HDMI cable. I did everything as described in the post from Lucky13, but no joy.

I have a 2008 Xbox Elite, and a LG 37 inch LC2D television. Both the hdd trick as well as the Y+trigger solution do not work. I am quite unwilling to send my Xbox in for repair when it is not broken!! it used to work fine with the old dashboard. Back to component cables for me, hopefully MS will work on another update to make sure all users have sound?

I have the same problem. I did the update, but I still have no sound through hdmi and I am getting a secure hdcp link not found when I try watching a DVD or netflix. I have no problems with the hdcp link through my DVD player of PS3, I have also switched wires. After 1.5 hours and four different tech support people, no one has any ideas, they tried telling me it was Netflix or my TV eventhough everything else I have hooked up works fines, and the 360 worked until the NXE update. I was hoping the update would fix this but apparently I am in the group where it doesn't. Oh well I guess I shouldnt be surprized that the patch failed everything else has so far. Thankfully I got a RROD a couple of months ago and tech support said they will fix this for free, so I guess I will play the PS3 for a few weeks while a wait, again to get this fixed. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a working system so I can play Halo wars with sound when it comes out?
