I love you all but

...the quitters are just insane on this game.    Usually after a community dies down only the hardcore continue.  And they usually are the "good sports" of the game.

But even in this cycle of Catan's online life, quitters are still rampant.    Either they quit during the placement stage when they dont get the the best set up.   Or they quit when someone has 8 points.    Heck some people quit just for getting robbed a few times.

Kind of a depressing thing for such a great game and older XBLA community.

You nailed it. There are a select few that can handle losing and stick the game out until the end. Besides, how boring would the game be if you had to quit 10 times in a row so you could get that perfect setup. I've won games with 3's, 4's and 11's and lost games with 6's, 8's and 9's. Even some of the players in the top ten rankings are perpetual quitters. You guys know who you are.

Last night I had another good example.

A guy enters the servers and becomes the 4th player.   He has the dubious record of 94-2.     And true to his record, when another player had 8 points and was clearly going to steal the longest road for the win this guy disappears moments before the other guy wins.   Suddenyl he is replaced by honest Abe (ironic) as the game ends.

What do poeple think?   If you have a record of 94-2 - we dont see you as a great player.   We see you as a quitter.    We dont think, "wow that guy is going to be tough to beat".   We think, "great another quitter".

Was that the record that he was showing in the lobby or was that his record on the official leaderboard? The lobby records reset after 256 so his record may have been 94 and 258 which is respectable. But you also said that he quit at the last second which makes him a giant douche.

My wife was told she was an idiot for not bailing when a guy told her he was going to win. WTH!

One suggestion:
Go into feed back and set the poor sports as NOT prefered players. I do that all the time. Don't ding their rep, just don't want to play them.

I really enjoy this game, but I haven't played the MP yet.  If anyone wants to play, let me know.  I just play games for fun, so you don't have to worry about me quitting if I'm losing.  Thanks in advance.

I just found out Xbox Live had this game available today... and bought it immediately!  Though it kinda sucks not being able to play with a group at the house (though obviously understandable.)  I haven't even played a game yet but the first thing I started to think about was quitters.  I F'ing hate it... Please FR me if you wish to play the game for the fun it and not to jizz your pants over your precious stats that your cheating to get to show people who don't care...

The only problem with giving them a bad revew is that you no longer can play with them. This is an issue if they are sitting in the lobby with 2 other players and you would have been the fourth player but instead you cannot join.

Should be but isnt, no matter the review you'll still see the guys you dont want to play just as much as the guys you prefer to play. I.e. Catan doesn't account for the repution you give when teaming against somebody to play.

Yep.  I could run down a list of completely unfavorable (aggro micspam/harassing txts)people i've played against and still see from time to time.

I'm a big fan of this game but I don't take part in the community part of it, you seem to all know each other which may explain something. My record isn't very good, 8 and 99. Always seem to come in third for the most part and I never leave because I am trailing. However, when the other three players gang up on one individual it stops being fun. I have been known to leave and for the most part I see other people leave when this happens. It's no fun when at least every turn cycle you are getting robbed from, if not more. I don't mind being *** blacked, I don't mind getting a bad spot, but when you get robbed from 20 times in a row it's a bit much. People wanna leave I say let'em, most likely it's because the other players have not allowed them to play to have fun.

@Keltic Rage 1. It's a strategic social trading game, remember that. A. Do trade and be fair and reasonable B. Dont start with the robber adn if someone is unreasonably targetted punish the person(s) doing it. C. Evaluate your starting position choices D. Start winning Ow and for the love of god stop quiting.

I've only played online a handful of times and all but 1 had at lease two people quit right in the middle or when they found someone was beating them. I gave up for a while. Unfortunatly my internet is having problems and keeps dropping me during online play across my games, so perhaps in a couple of weeks when it's fixed I can find some of you all again who are good sports.

Nothing brings a loving couple together like blasting the crap out of the undead.

agreed i really wish they would add some type of system to punish quiter and what makes it worse is once someone quits your game points dont count towards the achievements. i prolly should have at least 500 points by now but i cant even make it to 250 because of the quiters.

"connect 4" "where" "there" "pretty sneeky death"(scrubs season 1)

I dont even care about rank anymore (Hit#1 for a bit so i been thier done that).

But I have found that you have to play conservatively in this game to keep everyone around.  I dont pull out all my aces right away.  You dont use the robber on anyone with a score 3 or lower.  dont gang up on a player.  If all players are below 5 points and a cpu is in the game hit them witha  robber.

Dont build more then one spot late gaem (2 towns town and city etc) unless it will get you the game.. jumping from 7 to 9 spots while everyone else is at 6 or 7 points = players quiting.

I just started playing this game recently (love it!) and noticed this too.

My problem (besides the quitters) is that sometimes I wait and wait and when there are 4 players the game starts, and immediately everyone drops out and I'm playing against the computer.  Even before the initial placement phase.

This will happen 2-3 times in a row before I am able to start with human players.

Then... Dbag#1 quits when he doesn't get the placements he wants

Dbag #2 quits when it's obvious he's not going to win

So it's me and 1 other person, who's probably winning (hence the reason he hasn't quit).

I'm exaggerating a bit, but I think maybe getting some private games going would be best.

About the connection drops when starting up the game, that is often related to the NAT settings of the host; make sure your NAT settings are set to OPEN and not strict or moderate (see http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=451043). This helped me greatly, allthough I suspect that when the host drops from the game prior to setup everyone drops. What the quitters fail to realize is that everyone can win no matter what, even if you are trailing big time. It just takes 4 smart people in a game to come to that. Example last week I won a game where one player was sitting at 9 points for at least 20 turns, we just kept squashing him and preventing him to get the iron he needed, i was at 3 points, I then managed through the help of the others to steal away his biggest army, then the second player moved in to 8 points and was dangerly close to winning, so we all ganged on him (including mr. former 9 points), end score: i won, 2 players at 9 points and mr former 9 points finished at 8. This wont happen with cpu players because they fail to see who is really in the lead and too often gang on the wrong person. Then we have the players that continue trading and placing robbers out of early resentment to other players then those who are in the lead. Bottomline: most of the quitters are terrible players that have no clue about the end game, when you are playing the top ranked players you'll see a lot more games with 4 peepz from start to finish. Also did you know that your trueskill rating is greatly penalized if you quit a game? Btw for the record, I did quit 1 game myself this week with 2 completly clueless players who kept going after me even though I only had 3 points whilst the other player had 9 virtual points (2 cards he never played throughout the game) and still they blocked my 8 grain i shared with him (village each, where as he had the grain harbour with 3 points on the 4 and 2 on the 5 and 2 on the 10 and stole cards from me instead from him. Damnest frustrating game i played and quit because enough was enough. The programmers should have made a quit equal a loss with just 1 point. Sure the disconnectors would be victimised but I'd happily take that. All in all ranking could do with an improvement (i.e. list trueskill, weekly rating, overall and dont cutoff at 256 values).
