Eidos selling to Square Enix?!!?!?!?

Recently I have come across reports that Eidos is selling Tomb Raider to Square Enix....  I am VERY VERY disappointed.

As a Tomb Raider fan since the beginning of the game, I am very happy with the progression of the last few installments and what Crystal Dynamics has done to improve the games after the decline of installments like Angel of Darkness... and although Underworld has undergone alot of criticism, I think it was a good game with alot of solid improvements and was looking forward to how the franchise was going to progress.

I am not sure how the Square Enix buyout will affect the games, but all I can keep thinking of is the fact that almost ALL of their games are turn-based or strategy RPGs that all mimic Final Fantasy in a disgustingly endless spiral of unoriginality. Plainly put, this sucks!

You guys can check out where I got my info here:

Please, share any updated news or opinions on this info- and if this can be proven as rumor (though I sadly doubt it) that would be GREEEEEEAT!!!

This is not "new" news, and a few of us have discussed preferred buyout partners before this announcement. Bottom line is Eidos and Crystal Dynamics are failing and probably virtually bankrupt, so it's either this or bye-bye franchise.  Hopefully something good will come of it.

Well..... it was to me and I couldn't find any forums on it... perhaps I didn't look well enough...... I knew of the buyout I just wasn't away that Square Enix was going to be the ones acquiring the franchise.... I had hoped it would be Ubisoft or EA.

I agree with you, I had hoped for Ubi as well.  I thought maybe "EA", but with the exception of a very few titles, EA doesn't really have a good grasp on developing non-sports titles (and even that's probably giving them too much credit). My guess is that unless Eidos/Crystal already has TR9 in development, that it will take SE about 1-2 years to get a project going. Seriously, I don't expect another TR for at least 3-5 years.

ha ha...the issue is that SE games are generally RPGs, which TR is not. However, SE has some impressive game engines that Tomb Raider could possibly utilize, and I think that's where the potential is.

Tomb Raider made by Square Enix would surely be a RPG Indifferent [:|]

Tomb Raider is drifting very bad. The few noisy fans just aren't enough, or Eidos has way too ambitious expectations.

Still, Square Enix could bring the length and story Tomb Raider most needs. It's fun game as it is for 10 hours, but there's not much to remember later. The alternative is to make the game heavy online game, like most succesful games, which would be Angry [:@]Sad [:(]Crying [:'(]

It's ok for me,that SE will get Tomb Raider.I just hope they wont make Lara to a RPG Girl.SE could make TR in just one thing better - the graphics. But not more. And I dont think that SE dares to change TR to a RPG game.

So, i'm thinking if Square buys Tomb Raider this will happen:

Lara will be turned into Larry. A scarwney little guy with gigantic hair and big anime eyes. He will carry around Thor's Staff instead of guns, and he wont climb around and explore, he will be shot into space and fight against some lady named ShanananamanananananaRanaJama.

With like six other oddly named people. Like, EggShell, the midget who eats fire. Apple a model who turns into a vampire and eats people, Burger, a chef, Lububa, a cat, Shiney, a space ship, and.... Flower Head a little girl who can beat the crap out of stuff. >.>

Thats my prediction of Tomb Raider if Square gets Eidos. "Larry Doft: Tomb Raider and the SpaceAdventure"

lol.

OMG! I was thinking about that too! (SE games are turn-based RPGs) Eidos finally got this game to have action AND story. I swear to the almighty Jesus, they better not mess this up. I love FF, but it's over done now. I will be VERY upset if I see Lara jumping around in the Zanarkand Ruins in order to find the portal to the ancient ruins of the Centra to retrieve the legendary Holy Materia. Lets throw Master Chief into the mix! OH LOOK! THERE'S DRACULA AND ALUCARD! Is that Elvis!?!?! Holy poop! This is great!!

Square enix would be publisher, not developer. probably theyd hire the crystal dynamics team to make the game. but i find this whole rumour highly unlikely, why would a company focused on rpgs buy tomb raider? and even if they do, i cant imagine that they make it an rpg. 0% probablility.

Open world Tomb Raider in Japan against strange creatures. Sounds like Final Fantasy XXI.

Lets just say:
1. Corpses should stay. Making them disappear was a horrible addition by Crystal Dynamics
2. This kind of game must not have invisible walls. Level design has to be atleast that decent not to allow them. Without succeeding in this there's no chance an open world game will work.
3. Death should be more horrible. Often I rather die than live and travel through an area again. All in all checkpoint system is horrible. Removes the fear and disgust of dying completely.
4. More freedom. The games made by CD have way too many scripted moments. Comparison bethween TR1 and Anniversary proves it completely. Now Lara decides much of the stuff herself, in old games I was in control.
5. Longer game. No amount of extra treasures and challenges can overcome the experience of the first playthrough. This game should be more like 30 hours long. With 10 hour campaign it is bound to fail against the likes of Halo and GOW. Tomb Raider barely interests 2 playthroughs while most people can easily play Halo campaign 5 times.
6. M rating is good in making the game more realistic. Now no one and nothing gets wounded, ripped or crushed while they last enormous damage and move like a monkey without getting tired. Very tame and not scary or thrilling. The 1st games had worse graphics, but getting smashed by the hammer or falling into spikes felt much more brutal than it feels like in the new games.

Tomb Raider 1 pushed me into spectacular locations. Most of the time I was Lara instead of just watching and listening her or someone else. She was quite realistic in terms of strength, speed, fatigue and health. I was curious and afraid at the same time. Tomb Raider1 was one of the most beautiful, expansive and athmospheric games around. The new games are short, shallow and average compared to other games.

And 7. Ability to turn all the HUD icons off. I liked how the original games only had the health bar, only when you were armed or got damaged. That made it all seem more real with me having to count how many bullets I have etc. These newer games have all sorts of useless reticles and bullet info.

To make the old system better, health level could be told with vibration and/or visible damage. Once you drop down to 20% health the controller starts to vibrate like a heart, the pace increases as your health decreases. Or the visible damage would really be visible damage, a scratch on your leg hinders you but isn't very dangerous while a massive attack to the head is instant kill. This would actually be great improvement. Dozens of different kinds of damage real adventurers get all the time instead of 1 health bar. Makes medpacks seem more traditional instead of magic potions.
To make this complete Lara should be able to sprint and get tired of moving very fast. I don't like how she can't sprint but she can jump from ledges to ledges with such a high speed without getting tired. Lara is not Raziel. She should be able to stretch, but get tired of doing so.

Overall a lot more depth instead of short and shallow arcade running. Fortunately the new info talks about survival. Heal, rest, set up camps...
