you dude i would go with a 7.75 that is the most basic shape. in my opinion these are the best products

alien workshop decks
venture trucks
ricta wheels
diamond bolts
bones bearings
mob grip

7.75's are big. look at some 7.6's and 7.65s and figure out what suits your feet the best. and then go from there. You dont want to get a huge board to start with because it will be harder for you to manuver.

Hey you should check out www.skatewarehouse.com Thats where I got my new deck from. You can get a whole complete deck, customize it, and they will put it all together for you for around 100 bucks.

My set up:

Deck: Almost Daewong Song
Wheels: Spitfire:
Trucks: Tensor Lows:
Grip Tape: Black Magic
Riser Pads: PeckerHead

absolutely not true. its actually easier to navigate a wider board for a beginner. smaller boards didnt come about until the rise of flip tricks. the only reason anyone would use a smaller board is to aid with flip tricks and board control at an ADVANCED level. a wider board gives the skater more area to stand on allowing him to balance himself better.

i have worked in several skateshops and currently recieve flow from baker and venture.

we arent talking about your preference we are talking about helping a new skater get the setup he needs to learn.

quite honestly i find it almost laughable that you call7.75 a large board shape. its the most standard shape.

are you aware of boards that are 12 inches wide (thats a BIG board).

Re: Real skateboarders please help

saosinjg 11-16-2006, 5:17 PM
I agree with a 7.75....I found them easier to manuver and learn on. As for a board, I can't really say since I went through 6 boards my first year and didnt like any of them haha. What I can say is DONT MAKE YOUR OWN BOARD. Best way to learn is an already assembled board with the trucks tightened correctly and everything put on right, which just won't happen if you are doing it yourself for the first time

Hawcon 11-16-2006, 6:18 PM
ive always ridden 7.8-8", but it depends on how big your feet are. Stick with Independent Trucks, the original and best trucks by far :-D And some Pig wheels, Spitfires and Rictas flatspots (they loose the roundness) very quick. Dont bother buying the most expensive bearings, cheap ones usually work as good as the expensive ones. Ive skated for like 4 years so i know what im talking about. sorry about the horrible english haha :-P

MrSnakePlisskin 11-16-2006, 6:57 PM

Alva Eddie Rateaugi deck

Rat Bones wheels or OJ 2 Slimeballs

Tracktor trucks w/3/4" risers

plastic rails, nose guards and tail gaurds to protect your graphics

I'm probably 1 of 2 people on this board that actually rode any of that crap.

YESSURR 11-16-2006, 9:11 PM
ricta wheels have a money back guarantee on flatspots.

and besides we are talking about a beginner

either way its not going to matter as long as you have a pro board. dont get anything from wal mart you need the concave and shape of a pro board to learn the flip trips and what not.

indy trucks are heavy, unless you get the new stage 9 lows that eric koston is now endorsing..

and to the kid who is tryin to bash me a bit thats been skating for 4 years. would you like to compare footage?

ill give you a rundown of the best products right here

decks : alien workshop, baker, shortys, zoo york, habitat

workshop has the best shape and the pop lasts a really long time.

trucks: ventuer superlight lows, indy stage 9 lows, silver a class trucks

if you are going to skate street i would definantly go with low trucks, highs and mids are mostly for transition skating and vert, also they are better if you plan to ride bigger wheels

wheels : ricta, hubba, gold wheels

ricta wheels are great no flatspots and definantly the lightests wheels on the market, hubba has a sick team, gold wheels are from the kayo corp which is known for great products.

if you plan on riding alot of street i wouldnt get anything higher than 52mm

bearings: bones. only bones. get the ceramics if you have the cash they last alot longer and wont rust.

grip : mob, black magik, dgk signature grip

hardware: diamond, shortys

Go to a local skate shop and stand on some boards till you find one that feels good to you.

FLUCKIT 11-16-2006, 10:07 PM
Best decks I have been on are Status, Alien Workshop and Habitat (same company), Powel blanks are awesome for so cheap. Tensor trucks or phantom trucks, any blank wheel is fine and cheap, personally I like riding 51 mm wheels. Grip is grip, black magic has always been a favorite though. Hardware, doesn't really matter, get a longer scre.w, try to find silver screws to put in the two front holes and black for the rest so you know which way is forward. Halo bearings have been my favorite.

Definantly just buy ABEC 7 bearings, learn on fast bearings so you don't have to worry about it. 7.75 is what I ride and I'm 6'1. You just have to go through different products to find out what you like.

fight to live 11-17-2006, 3:23 PM
if you want to save some money, you can probably get the people at your local shop to give you some free hardware if your cool enough......plus you don't necessarily need abec 7 bearing...dont get me wrong abec 7's are the way to go if your lazy and don't service your bearings ever.....but if ur not....you can buy some red bearings....and they aren't even an abec, it just depends on how well you keep care of em....i know w lot of people who swear by them....also....just get standard grip that they'll automatically offer you....you don't need to shell out extra cash for 'designer' grip tape

Re: Real skateboarders please help

fight to live 11-17-2006, 3:24 PM
oh ya...and blank wheels too...their the same as other wheels just cheaper

Rand The Man 89 11-17-2006, 7:31 PM

Personally I say 7.75, Its what I have always skated not to big yet not to small. I wouldnt go any bigger unless your feet are huge. So I'd go with.

Any Baker Board and thing andrew renolds or dustin dollin

Or Darkstar unbreakables are nice too. I broke mine an 7 stair when i stuck at the bottom

Krux Trucks

Reds Bearings

any wheel that isnt smaller than 50 but not bigger than 56

Wicket2961 11-17-2006, 11:16 PM
Whats up man,
best thing to do is go into a skate shop and stand on the deck without any hardware on it.
alot of decks are good and in all fairness if your only just starting i wouldn worry too much about the name on it.its definitely nice to have a decent deck like ZERO, BIRDHOUSE, BLIND, ELEMENT and so forth but your gonna scratch it to ***.
when you get better you will like getting a new expensive deck and ruining it because you can say " that awful scratch was from em doing a *&&%^&^&" whatever, definitely buy decent wheels and i think medium firm will be best as they are fast but they grip and make less chance of you tripping over a stupid pebble.
cut a line in your grip tape so you know where your back foot should be, ie on the tale of the deck.
get some decent trainers.... osiris are my favourite but vans are good, something that will protect you ankles cause it does hurt if you catch them.
trucks dont matter too much but by a decent name/make of truck and 100% by fast bearings as you will soon get pissed off with slow ones when your trying to do some tricks.

good luck with it and i hope you stay in tact

Please someone make a decent game cause i aint played one since Bioshock

I don't skate anymore, I swim, I know weird transition, but grab some bones reds, quick bearings, don't get big shoes either, decks don't really matter as long as their fair [as stated above], i used to skate alien workshop, and toy machine decks, loved them, and also mini logo's are great, fairly cheap, and you can put w/e you want on them. Don't worry about grip tape, grab some generic grip tape, it's all good, and try and get a friend to start or who know's what he or she is doing, it's great to have someone to help you along. I also saw alot of great advice above, it all depends on your preference as well, Gl. Big Smile [:D]

Also I know I don't have the game on my gamertag, but I still was a skater. I play with an offline account as me and my bro share this one, at least until christmas!

Excuse the grammar

prophanity 11-18-2006, 3:41 AM

ok,, u gotta let us know how old are you,, how much u would like to spend, and what u plan on doing eg street or vert??

my advice is if your street skating and want to learn like kickflips etc,, get a smaller sized deck,, personally i find it alot easier to do tricks on them, u have more freedom etc,,you should go to a skateshop and have a look at all the decks,, dont let graphics determin ur purchase, as they mean nothing, and if ur gonna practise slides etc, they get smudged after a few sessions anyways,,, so try to get something light, element makes light decks,,so check them out,, also get some decent trucks,, i wouldnt really bother gettin brand wheels or bearings as u are just starting out, get no name brands,, it wont make much difference cause ur not goin to go fast anyways,,,

so thats my advice,,  hope it helps you mate and good luck.

you just have to ask people who skate, ask school mates or just go to skateparks and see whats up,,,and personal preference as well,,,

edit,,, also as stated above,, skate shoes are very important,,, as if ur wearing normal shoes they will rip after doing a few kickflips etc,,,, get shoes which are tight fitting,, with lots of padding around the olle area and kickflip area,,, as stated above, osiris, es, emerica all make good shoes,,,

and also practise on some flat surface,, first try to just get comfortable on the deck moving around at a decent speed,, tick tac around and stuff,,, before u practise any flip tricks etc,,

Well everyone is giving you a setup worth over 100£

so ill just give you some tips that can work our cheap;

bearing wise try and get ABEC 1 or ABEC 3 you dont want something like ABEC 5 + not when your just starting out, it will shave a few quid off aswell for you.

deck wise try and get canadian maple, it lasted me the longest each time did canadian, stay away from chinese

if you go to a skate shop you can usually get a set up for about 40£ which is good for starting out; stay away from toys r us, argos and any other shop like that, that sells setups.

you will prob want to loosen your trucks aswell, to do that flip over the deck and turn the big bolt till ure trucks and how you want them.

plan bs are easy to control and are amazing for flip tricks
darkstars are horrible and big/bulky.
elements are decent
blind is an excellent starters deck, and relativly cheap.
almosts are good to.
but plan b is by far the bestt.
ive road all of them
