No need to hit enemies for All Weapons award

While playing this game I couldnt not find a straight answer on wielding all weapons in the game.Some people said you had to hit the enemy while others said you could just swing it. So what I did was made a list of all weapons and marked them differently during my play through between actually hitting an enemy or just swinging it and hitting walls and objects.And I can testify that I recieved the achievement at the end of the game and I  DID NOT hit enemies with all the weapons. Several weapons I found I only wielded them and hit walls,dead bodies,tables, etc and I got credit for it.

I'm just curious, is it necessary to use all the firearms melee-style to earn this achievement ?
