Rank Progression?

ROCK THE MAN 01-10-2009, 4:50 PM
Does anyone know how they figure out what your rank is for the single player leaderboards? I have been playing hard against different A.I.'s and have lost twice in a row but having 9 vp's and have increased my sp rank each time. I was originally thinking that maybe they based it off of your vp's and maybe had a multiplier added for whatever diffuculty you played on but that doesnt seem to be the case. I am wondering if it also depends on the A.I.'s that you play against depending on there overall skill. If anyone knows or has a better idea than what I have put out there let me know. I will also be looking to start playing against people so if you like to play for fun hit me up with an invite, I wont bail. My wife plays some on my account so if you get ignored dont take it personally she doesnt pay attention to messages very well.

That is a great question.  Whatever formula they used surely seems flawed.

Just play ranked Rock, thats where all the action is. "Friendly" games don't get so many games unless you get 3 more people in yourself.

I think the ranking part of this game has been broken from day one and will never be fixed.

I think the rankings are far less broken then people seem to think or at least the ranked rankings are:

Weekly is sorted by vps.

Overall is sorted by win/loss ratio taking quiting games into account.

Yeah so far I have not been able to figure out whatever formula they use to figure out the single player ranks, I have had games where I have played the same A.I.'s and had the same vp's and longest road, largest army cards and had totally different jump in ranks. I am thinking about starting to get into some ranked games but you hear so much crap being said about quitters and people acting like babies that it might suck too much fun out of the game for me.

Meh dont let the quiters stop you from playing, it's not like the game ends when they quit they get replaced by a cpu player. If someone trully acts like a baby (i.e. spam angry at you you simply mute them with the donkey emote).

Yeah I played a couple of unranked matches two nights ago I think with a couple of guys that were pretty cool and I had a good time. I will probably step into some ranked matches pretty soon, its not if I win or lose that matters too me as long as I am learning more about the game and having fun that is important too me.

If all players three oponents quit in a ranked match, do you still get a win? Last night all three of my opponents quit and I had to finish the game against three AI. But after the game my win was not recorded.

And incidentally, the quitters were premature. When I got to 9 VPs, all three players left the game leaving me playing the AI. The thing is that I still needed about four or five turns to win the game. I am sure that the other could have potentially won if they had stayed in considering that they each had 7 or 8 points.

The quitting annoys me slightly, because I never quit. Playing the game is an experience whether you win or lose, although I always try to win. Although I do like to see my name in the rankings even if I am several thousand places from the top.

Rankings are taken far too seriously. All these people don't realise that no body really cares if about anyone else's ranking. And the higher the ranking, the less seriously we take it.

Yeah its tough for me to understand why someone would want to quit. I would much rather play and lose than wuss out and quit so I didnt take a loss. I can understand if your connection got messed up or RL needed attending too, but quitting so I didnt take a loss thats pretty pathetic in my opinion but its always been easier for me to man up and learn from losing than it was to back down or quit a challenge. Just my opinion though. I am sure it will ruffle some feathers, namely with the people that do quit to keep there winning records intact, but I would rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.

At least 2 people have to finish the game for you to get credit for the win.

It is usually pretty easy to see the people that try and quit before the game ends without taking a loss as their record usually shows more wins than losses in a game where the best players are lucky to win more than 50% of their games.

Before you start black-listing players with more wins than losses in the pregame lobby, keep in mind that wins and losses are reset once they reach 256.  So someone showing 110 wins and 6 losses may in fact have 110 wins and 262 losses. This is a common misconception that I once shared myself. The leaderboard in the main menu is an accurate reference.

As for the rank progression, I have no idea how it works. I'm currently ranked 18th and I never quit voluntarily while there are higher ranked players with worse win/loss records.

Yeah my wife just finished a game where she was playing a pretty skilled player guessing from his win loss before the game and she was winning by quite a bit and all three players quit. She was a little frustrated at that point but really upset when she realized that it didnt count as a ranked win. Ehh the levels that some stoop too I guess will never cease to amaze me.

It only resets in the pregame lobby. The leaderboard that you access from the main menu has the correct win/loss records and rankings.

That explains a lot.

In a recent game, I was well behind, but didn't quit. Two players quit before the end, but I carried on despite having almost no chance of winning.

In fact tomwards the end of the game, I actually helped indirectly my remaining human opponent by only putting the robber against the AI. My view is that if I can't win myself, I would rather ther human opponent won. At the end of the game the opponent sent me a love message which was a nice touch.

I simply enjoy playing, even if I lose. It will make winning more enjoyable if I do win.

My wife and i are new to the "live" experience, but enjoy the human element so much more than A.I. We were wondering about all the rankings so i just wanted to thank all of you because the forum cleared up some stuff. its also nice to know that here are people out there who aren't jerks and like the game for what it is without being concerned with rankings. hopefully we can play sometime.

mistermoravec 03-10-2009, 11:12 PM
Absolut is right. The multiplayer lobby ranking is off. Every number resets at 256. The ranked leaderboard is dependent on accumulative victory points. (I know I will probably be scolded for saying this, but quitting can help you in the ranked leaderboard. Say if you have 9 pts, and the longest road, if someone is about to take the longest road away and win but you quit first, you will be credited with 9pts, not 7 as you would have if you stuck around. Now this only applies if there are still 3 other human players in the game. It will not count your win/loss in the win/loss category, but your accumulative victory point is updated.) Sometime in spring of last year the accumulative victory points were all reset to zero. That is why, if you look at the top 100 or so of the leaderboards things don't seem to make sense. For example, I'm ranked somewhere in the 30s. However, if you look at my wins/losses compared to about 14 people ranked above me, it is obvious I should be ranked higher. However, those people have earned more victory points than I have since the reset, therefore they are ranked higher. I won't say much about quitting because I quit all the time...rarely after the first five minutes (not trying to make excuses, just stating the facts)

This is a great thread. It's good to see that there are other Catan afficianados out there that understand the basic principles of fair play. It's too bad the developers won't change the leaderboards to penalize those that quit early, unfairly penalizing players who've earned a victory and essentially ruining an otherwise great on-line board-game experience for something so petty and ridiculous. I equate the quitters to those people in real life who turn over the Monopoly board after an hour or so of gameplay, because they can't stand losing.Stick out tongue [:P] The difference being that the average game of Catan on Xbox, probably, takes around 15 minutes.

If this is true then the ranking system is more flawed than I thought. Accumulating points towards rank progression before a match has officially ended just promotes quitting. I always thought that quitters were giving up those points by bailing at the last second. This is an exploit that you really should have kept to yourself. I know of a few glitches that I'll never share because I don't want people to ruin the game with them. I don't understand what people think they're accomplishing by cheating. Do they show the Catan leaderboard to their friends and gloat after they've quit the last 100 matches?

Fortunately, there are a few good players left that play fairly and don't feel it necessary to exploit the game for a meaningless rank. I can still say that I've never quit voluntarily.

That is why you never see people with wins/losses over 255 in the lobby area.
