Hellz yes, Earthbound is the best.

I like both Shining Forces, too.

Super Mario RPG is too annoying & easy for me, but Pokemon is some pretty addictive sh*t!

Re: Best RPG
I played Earthbound on my Dreamcast. I burned some homebrew that includes NES and SNES emulation. I might have to look for it again. I didn't get very far. I killed a huge bee and bought some better equipment while having occasional scraps with the local gang punks. That's about all I remember.

Re: Best RPG

The first RPG I ever played was Lunar: the Silver Star on the much-maligned Sega CD. Shortly thereafter, I got the sequel, Lunar: Eternal Blue.

I still feel the originals far exceed the PS remakes. I can't speak for any of the ones they produced for GBA, but the remake of Lufia sucked in bad way, so I have little faith in those.

Is it at least developed by Working Designs?

Re: Best RPG
There are definitively games that are brought back again and again when it come to the best rpgs ever made:

Baldur gate 2
Kotor
The elder scroll III:Morrowind
The elder scroll IV:Oblivion
Planetscape:torment
Fallout
Earthbound
Dragonquest VIII
Suikoden 2 (yes, suikoden 2 was an awesome rpg which lasted 60 hours and it was a refinement of what the first one did and had one of the most merorable bad guy outside of Kefka Stick out tongue [:P])
Final fantasy VI
Final fantasy IX(a back to the basic FF where each class had their specific role and probably the most polished and balanced FF in the playstation era)
Chrono Trigger

Outside of these, you will get a lot of controversial choices which could or couldn't be worthy of being considered among the best rpgs ever made.

Mass effect is still fresh off the shelves, and could be included in this list or not, since it's flawed enough to not even be worthy of a game of the year award. It's japanese cousin is probably Vagrant story which also got great reviews, but it was also a game with a broken battle system(what a dumb design choice).

Chrono cross is viewed as one the most overrated rpg of all time, and it's one flawed game that I still find worthy of being among the best rpgs of all time but many will also hate it.

The numerous others Final and Dragonquest could be included or not,but they all have their flaws while FF VI was truly one step ahead of everything else when it was released.Dragonquest VIII is the classic DQ formula refined and polished to perfection,so I think it's the best overall DG among the franchise(let's be honest, most games in the franchise played the same and were all about insane grinding while DQ VIII added a big dose of charm and personnality thanks to character depth which was badly lacking up to DQ VIII).

I wanted to include Xenogear, but I have to admit that the game is flawed beyond belief.Especially the second disc where Monolith ran out of time and money, which nearly destroyed the game. Sad [:(] I'm sorry, but a character standing on a chair for half an hour and recapping the story up to that point is unexcusable. Angry [:@] Too bad, since the story was incredibly ambitious and they had all these great concept like the fighting system+gear battles which were poorly executed.

One thing is certain as far as I'm concerned, and that's the fact that Bethesda and Bioware will probably battle it out as far as the best rpg developer in the world right now(the japanese are still making solid rpgs, but they are at a point where it's mostly flash, style and virtually no substance outside of rare exception).

Bethesda is becoming bigger and bigger, and it's going to be interesting in seeing what they do with Fallout 3 and Elder scroll V.

Re: Best RPG
I barely remember Earthbound. But I do remember it was awesome. My friend had it and I remember something with bee's and a spaceship at the begining. I remember you could answer your favorite food and make it something like "***" so that in the game it would say something like "Josh ate some ***." We thought that was the funniest thing back then. I don't have a SNES but is there a way to get it on the computer or something?

I'd love to get my hands on a copy of Suikoden 2, I loved the first and 3rd in the series.

I've never gotten all 108 stars of destiny in Suikoden 1, is it even possible? I've scoured the entire globe, even all the way back to the bottom of the Dwarven vaults, and I can only find about 80 people.

And, in conclusion, Eartbound is GOD

Everybody here knows that I love M~Wind like it was my own friggin' child, but I still have to vote for all the old classics. I know I have more to add, but I can never think of all the RPG's I own, until I go home & look at them.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Earthbound

Robotrek

Secret of Mana

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals

E.V.O. ~ the Search for Eden

Breath of Fire II

Final Fantasy III

Phantasy Star 2 & 4

(If you can't tell, I friggin' love the Super Nintendo)

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

=HONORABLE MENTIONS=

Soul Blazer

Secret of Evermore

the 7th Saga

< and a bunch of sh*t on Playstation >

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I didn't add Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG to the list for very specific reasons: those games suck.

Re: Best RPG
I would say The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion.  Dont get me wrong Morrowind is a great game, it has more to do then in Oblivion but Morrowind is very boering, I like Oblivion because everyone has a voice rather then just a big box of text appeairing when you talk to someone.  I do beleive that fast travel should have been added to Morrowind AFTER you have gone to places, and I also beleive that you should have to travel to the major cities in Oblivion before you got fast travel; so that the game could be expeiranced to its fullest.  In morrowind when you wanted to travel across the world it could take a couple hours and that made me just want to quit.  And thats why I like Oblivion better.

No way. I can get to any place in Morrowind in less than 5 minutes. You can get to Vivec, Balmora, Sadrith Mora, Caldera and Ald Ruhn via the Mages Guild.

Vivec has transportation via boat which will allow you to visit every major city around the continent.

And then of course Silt Striders allow you to visit 1/2 of the continent.

The next main source of fast travel is Mark and Recall, and then if you are very dilligent you can find all of the indices for the propylene chambers in the old ruins (but most people need the book to find them all, and some are only accessible to high level characters). If you join a Vampire clan and finish all of the quests you get an amulet that allows you to fast travel to the head quarters of that clan (also only for high level characters).

If you make your home town residence in a location that has at least 2 means of fast travel (for example Balmora which has the Mages Guild and a Silt Strider) then you can use mark and recall to get home, unload stuff, sleep, level up, etc. then use one of the transportation services to a location that will get you close to your destination. If it takes hours to get somewhere, it's because you didn't take advantage of the fast travel options, which in turn means you probably didn't spend enough time playing the game.

Re: Best RPG
Wow thats a realy hard question...

I suppose all rpgs have there strenghs in different categories.
I love the older FinalFantasy's not because they were as open and awsome as Morrowinds world or anything..But they had realy good storys as well and a party of close friends not snearing dunmer...Not that a solo game like Morrowind isn't cool but sometimes you wan't more character interactions and an involving story Morrowind has that stuff but not to the extent that FinalFantasy or a game like Xeonogears. But Morrorwind is better at freeroaming unlimted gameplay but Xeonogears did take me a good 80Plus hours to beat and it was worth it.

I'd say Morrowinds more advanced than older rpgs like FF but there are a lot of games comin out to 360 that are very good as well such as Kingdom Under Fire, Mass Effect and Lost Odessy.

Some of my fav rpgs that i've played are..

FF9
FF6
FF7
FF4
FF1-Somewhat it gets boring fast
ChronoTrigger
Morrowind ElderScrolls 3Rd
Xeonogears
Fable
CastleVaniaSotn
Zelda Series (anyone there all good and yes i do consider zelda an rpg you do get stronger muxch like fables system except with hearts instead of life vials)
Arkadian warriors-For10 bucks decent co-op

These are all the rpgs i've finished and ones that stuck in my mind as some of the best there not in any particular order because i could play any of these again.

Hey GSP,

I'm playing Earthbound right now! I am in the 4th town and have defeated 3 of the 8 bosses that block "your base". What's up with the photographer that always takes snapshots and wants you to say "fuzzy pickles" LOL?

Anyway, since I didn't have very many games for the SNES back in the day which one should I play next? I was thinking about giving Chrono-Trigger a try. Is Arcana good?

Just give me a name, and i'll give it a try.

ANYTHING made by Bioware. KotOR, Mass Effect, & the Baldur's Gate Series are all on my favorite game list. You can't call your self a RPG fan if you have'nt played any of those. So what im saying is GO BUY ONE OF THOSE GAMES NOW AND PLAY IT OR I WILL DESTORY YOU!

You'r cool as heck Taldarin but i don't agree.

I'm actualy pissed that i havn't played KOTOR or Mass Effect but those 2 games are relatively new....

I believe hardcore rpg fans started with FF1 -FF9 (the last good Final Fantasy in my opinion) Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and other great games such as Xeonogears.

You can't call your self a RPG fan if you have'nt played any of those.

I''m not gonna take that seriously but i consider myself a huge rpg fan and have played none of those and wtf how'd my text turn green all of a sudden?? How do i change it back to black i prefer things practical.

Anyways all those games you mentioned (exspecialy KOTOR) were influenced by much older turn based rpgs.
Xeonogears is an 80 plus hour game and its almost all story (a great story at that) anyone whos played Xeonogears is a hardcore rpg fan for real.

Thank you for saying that, I respect your opinion i'll have to pick up some of those FF that came out for the PS1 because I have one. KotOR isnt really that new it came out 4 years ago. If you have'nt you really should go out and get Baldur's Gate, its got a very good story. I havent heard about Xeonogears I guess i've been under rock. And don't take "you can't call yourself a RPG fan if you havent played any of those." seriously I had the thought all of you had played one of those, sorry.

As for your text... I have infected you!
