If you've turned on the options, you'll now see notes in four colors: red are 1/4 notes, blue are 1/8 notes, yellow are 1/16 notes, and green are 1/32 notes. You won't see yellow or green until expert. The green striped arrows are the long notes, but you see those regardless of these settings.
Anyway, this helps for very few challenges. Most of the challenges that have a 1/X stipulation also have "flat notes' turned on, which negates the coloring. You can however use the coloring in arcade mode to help memorize which notes are which.
Color aside, if you listen carefully you can tell which are which. Red notes are the main beat of the song, blue is a background beat, etc, etc. It's harder to tell which are which within blue, yellow, and green, but you'll easily be able to tell them apart from the main, red notes.
One other thing is the pattern. It's hard to explain, but when you see "note, note, note" in quick succession the middle one is most likely a blue. Most of the songs will have these "note, note, note" sections followed by another "note, note note" section in a way akin to Guitar Hero's "galloping" (go find out what that is if you don't already know). There will be some sections which are more than three notes, in which case it will alternate: red, blue, red, blue, etc
If I had a dollar for every brain you didn't have, I'd have one dollar.
