Serious 'Gamers'
Something really irks me about people who own a major colnsole and buy maybe a few big-name games a year and thats IT, then call themselves serious gamers. Peple like who buy all sports games and COD, while completely ignoring everything else. This isn't really detremntal to the games industry like 'casual' gamers buying wii shovelware, but it just seems ignorant.

Example:
A guy I know fits this profile and, weeks before COD: WaW's release, was hyping it up and came to talk to me. This guy has obviously never picked up a gaming magazine, and has never looked into his purchases beforehand. He tells me COD: WaW is set in Vietnam. I tell him that it is WW2. He says his dad fought in Vietnam and he should know. .......WOW...... The same person owns only sports games, Halo, and COD.

This seems to be a real stereotype in the gaming market, but its not really noticed. I get very upset about technolgy, games, and all that good stuf I love. I am by no means an expert on any of these subjects, but PLEASE, PLEASE, understand something and follow it before you stick your kneck out as an 'authority' on it.

Sorry about the rant, just thought I should get it off my chest...eventually. Comment or complain, I wonder if this bothers anybody else.

I don't exert the effort it takes to get upset over the things other people do. Let these people be wrong if they want to be. They are the ones that are going to look stupid in front of other people later on.

Correct them once and if they don't want to listen, move on.

Re: Serious 'Gamers'
It doesnt bother me, I dont see why it should bother anyone. In the end serious gamers know that they're serious gamers and they can tell when somebody else is or isnt. When I see people who think they're "serious gamers" and obviously dont know what they're talking about, I either just laugh it off or try to inform them so they dont look dumb the next time they try to bring it up lol.

I had something else to say but I forgot so ill put it in another post if I remember.

Well, saying I was 'upset' makes it seem like I really got bothered by it, its not like THAT. I just let them be dumb and move on (most of them are just my friends from sports, minus the closeted game affection I have). Ignorance just bothers me, especially when the person belives that they are right and their opinion will not be swayed. It only makes it worse when they spread their 'scoop' and misinform others. ANYWAY...sorry about this rant, Im just very meticulous and I dwell over stuf. It just seems like people like this are no better than all the 'hardcore' Wii gamers out there.

Being a "hardcore" Wii gamer isnt a bad thing because when people are playing a Wii because if the casual player plays a Wii and decides that they want something more "hardcore""then they can go pick up a 360 or PS3. The Wii is like the gateway drug of gaming.

Who cares really.  A person can like or dislike whatever they want.  They can title themselves whatever they want.  You don't have to agree, but nothing to get worked up about.

Wow...ok I dont rlly care to this extreme that I think you guys think I do. It doesn't rlly bother me to a level where I care at all. Im tired and supposed to be studying for an exam, and any extra emotion I seem to be displaying in this is likely a by- product of that. I think what Im trying to say has been misinterpreted greatly.

I find these "serious" gamers whenever I go to Game Stop or Game Stop analog.

When I die, I want to go like grandpa, peacefully while I'm asleep. Not screaming like the other people in his car.

Re: Serious 'Gamers'
I think at one point I was a dead serious gamer and to some extent I think I still may be.  Difference is that now I have way more responsibilities and schedule restraints that don't allow me to game the way I'd like to/used to.  I now own 2 of the current gen consoles (360 and PS3) a PSP and a moderately decked out gaming PC (Runs Crysis, Crysis Warhead, X-Men Origins, Fallout 3 and Riddick all on High, smooth as butter). I try to show'm all love but its hard sometimes, lol.  I just game where the games are man. FTW

Well said. I've even had people who work at GameStop who are misinformed. People will believe what they believe. The best thing to do I this k is move on if they're really stubborn.

I know how you feel being a nintendo editor and all. I see people whine about the wii when all they own is wii sports irks the hell out of me. I own 35 games for my Wii and I buy small independent underrated titles like De blob and deadly creatures. I mean i love the Italian brothers but you have to broaden your views of gaming.

Re: Serious 'Gamers'
I define being a hardcore gamer as the following: (Feel free to add or comment on this list.) 1. Know some differences between the consoles, and who created them. That is a pretty good indication that someone might know what they're talking about. 2. Know that there's more to the respective consoles than just "Halo" or "Mario" or "that game with the chainsaw (Gears)" 3. Actually put some effort into LEARNING about the game, including knowing who developed and published a title. 4. Actually put some effort into PLAYING the game, including single player and multiplayer, where applicable. 5. Not getting nervous or making mocking comments when another gamer wants to talk about a game... You can have a decent conversation about gaming: it is possible, as I do it frequently. 6. Playing a title on a higher difficulty setting, therefore creating a strenuous but rewarding experience. Call of Duty on Veteran, anyone? 7. Something more for forum junkies: know some common acronyms for gaming and posting in the forums. ROFL and COD, for example. 8. Actually make an effort to get family members to at least UNDERSTAND the gaming universe in some way. Sharing is caring, people. 9. Make an honest effort to beat a game on a high difficulty setting. You know, something that could take WHOLE DAYS to beat. Some of you know what I'm talking about. 10. Not being on Netflix on XBL all day! (Ha!) Whaddayouguysthink?

Yeah, I know what you mean man. All my sports buddies and I have a bad habit of getting into it about this. I love pretty much all games, but most of my buds only play COD, not even Halo, they literally just play COD, FIFA, and NHL. Being a football player, I think it's wierd that the only one of my friends who isn't like this is a soccer player. It really sucks when you want to play games like Left 4 Dead or Rock Band and can't get enough people to really enjoy it. But hey, they're our friends, what can we say you know.

i myself am not a "serious gamer" i am a gamer that has at least tried 1 game in most of the main genres. i have a couple xbl friends that only play 1 or 2 games, i  can't understand how they can play gears or call of duty (i play CoD on PC, but not for awhile) 24/7.  i also have a Wii system, gathering dust . . .  no games have come out that interest me.

If people want to be ignorant, let them. Just ignore them and move on. If you stay on the same problem for too long, you won't get anything accomplished.

People like that irk me as well, but I've gotten used to that by now.

There's all sorts of people on XBL... that's fine. I agree to a certain point with your statement, Axe: Ignore the noise and move on. But, if you fell led to, pray for that person or people. (PS- not starting a religious flame war: I'm against religion, but not against a relationship with God.)

What about professional gamers? Some folks out there play Halo 3 for 10 hours a day in order to become proficient enough to compete at a high level. If you are enjoying what you play it doesn't matter if it is a big title once or twice per year, or if it is every title that comes out. Either way I love gaming, and will never quit.

You can be a serious gamer without being rich I only buy about 2-3 games a year (my real gamertag is alexmark). The only thing tht anoys me is that their are all these people that set their zone as pro. The definition of pro means you make your living off gaming.

Sorry. That is not all it means according to xbox.com.

Xbox Live Gamer Zone: Pro
The Pro gamer is the truly hardcore—gamers who are there to play and to win, improving their gamerscore.

You might be a pro gamer if …

  • You automatically mute the "human beat box" gamers and you automatically boot the "trash-talking chucklehead" gamers.
  • You've actually won real prize money in videogame competitions.
  • You never play anything but ranked games, and your rank has never gone anywhere but up.
  • You check leaderboards for games that aren't even playable online.
  • You own griefer insurance. Which, if you don't have it, is quite a deal and I would be happy to assist you if it existed.

I agree with Dagda, I set mine as pro because that was the definition of pro according to xbox. If the definition on xbox was "you play games professionaly(?) or for money" i would have set it to something else.

You don't have to "Buy" a lot of games to be called a serious gamer.  I have a friend who makes a lot of money, therefore can afford to buy every game that comes out, but he hardly plays them.  That does not make him a "serious" gamer in my eyes.  If someone can only afford some of the big titles for the year, but really get into them, play and study them, then I have no problem calling them a serious gamer.

I don't have a ton of games myself, but I love them to death and I play them religiously.  I keep up with the news and read up all the time.  I consider myself serious.  But since I can't really buy more than 2 games a year does that make me a non-serious gamer?  I just don't think it matters on the quantity of games you buy.

Aye, good sir, you bring up a good point. Fortunately, there ARE "enforcers" out there who will put these bums in their places. I say, keep bugging these "gamers". There's nothing more insulting than people being wrong when they don't know it.

Also remember what Stan, Kyle, and Cartman discuss in the 9/11 conspiracy episode of South Park. "1/4 of Americans are retarded. At least 1/4."
