is it as gripping and scary as earlier silent hills and is it worth picking up. i am so late to the party because the game kept getting pushed back ehre in australia due to ratings issues and is finally being released soon

Well, its a yes or a no. depends how much you are attached to the franchise. It looks really good, its got inspiration from the movie. Now this im not to crazy about. I love the way SH3 was shifting, but i really cant be negative on it cause the other side stays true to the look, even worse now. The monsters are typical bandage type, and the nurses are more revealing(butt shot on intro).

Now the one thing id complain about if I had to, would be the game was designed. The town is too straight foward. the first trip around youre going places, but usually the game tells you were to go. One aspect I loved about SH is that you could explore and find easter eggs and the like. You cant do it much here. the town is too small and blocked off. Now dont let this discourage youthough casue its small compared to SH1, and that was like 3 parts.

One note is that the game was a bit rushed. Not all cinematics carry through the costume youre wearing(alternate costumes) and i have found some glitches in the game. Even the startaegy guide has mistakes. I thought it was cool cause the game was new but my friend told me they get a copy of the game months b4 its release.

On a good note, SH´s favorite icon villian is back, and his appearance does make sense. Im glad they didnt put him in there just to slap his image to sell more. If you can, rent it. I own it cause I have all the games. Its 40 bucks now over here in the US. the first impression of the game is a good one!

I never played the earlier ones -- Homecoming was my first Silent Hill.  I thought it was an excellent scary game. I had a VERY difficult time with my first playthrough. Even so, I give it   Yes [Y] Yes [Y] Yes [Y] Yes [Y]

Ive played (and finished 100%) all previous Silent Hill games and I thought this one was by far the worst. It has some decent puzzles but the enemies are terrible in this one and I just didnt enjoy playing it. Only took a few days to get all achievements as well, hardly any challenge in it.

I found Homecoming to be very enjoyable, it's pleasant to play. You walk around lost in silent hill and you get to explore a little more than in the previous games. The best aspect is the atmosphere, by the visual style and the music from Akira Yamaoka. I found exploring to be more enjoyable than ever. The graphics aren't super advanced, but overall the visuals are very classy. I have never felt so surreally pleased while walking around Silent Hill.

The puzzles are also quite entertaining and some can be hard. I didn't run into any trouble with the difficulty although many did. The combat has been upgraded, but it fits perfectly well. The enemies are refreshing and well designed, the bosses are even better. I'm very happy with those.

The story and the characters is good enough, it's intriguing and you keep wanting to further the story.
It has taken a few aspects from the movie but they blend in well and they have been customized to the game, rather than the other way around.

Overall I would say that it's a great game, as a fan of Silent Hill you should get it. It's great to play but it's somewhat wattered down from teh former games. It's not bad at all, the only Silent hill game that i didn't liek was Origins. I still find Silent hill 1 and 2 to be the best, and I also love 3 and 4, and Homecoming is a worthy addition to the franchise.

The only downsides I encountered was that at times it gets hard to see because it is so dark, other than that i hope that Double Helix pics up the mantle for the series as long as team Silent isn't coming back together.

Well, in answer to your question Blackburn, no. It isn't like the others (2,3 and 4). It has a totally different development team, and it's basically an American travesty. Having said that, it's a decent enough horror/survival RPG. But I don't consider it a true Silent Hill sequel.

I agree with Blackest. It was terribly short, and way too easy. Not a challenge at all. I've played Origins too, and even that was better than Homecoming.

Having played and completed all previous Silent Hill games, i can confidently say that this is easily one of the best - second only to Silent Hill 2.

The atmosphere is recreated superbly and the tension and fear is always there just around the corner.  The story in this game is one of the best and i am actually intrigued by it just like Silent Hill 2.

Only downer i would consider is that the flashlight is not very effective - in previous games i had brightness turned all the way down so i could only see inside the 'cone' from my flashlight.  With this game the flastlight isn't bright enough to do that which  affects the atmosphere/scariness a little.

Otherwise though, well worth the money - excellant game

Origins was the 1st one i ever played and i liked it, didn't loved it but it has fine.

i'm going to give this one a try later on.

i am a big SH fan,finished the first 5 games..and even have the movie(first half was good,second half wasnt)

but i have been holding off buying this game,mainly because it came out 6 months too late(here in the UK) and at full price(which i thought was cheeky,seen as though some new releases were a couple of quid less than usual)..but now its gone down in price i may end up getting it this weekend

well same here i didn't play the other ones this was my first one is not really scary but i really like it and as everyone else i know my first playtrough was hard but once u get to know the control and play ing the game turns to a very nice experience i would recomend it !

I'm only in the beginning of the game (just drained water from the basement part) but I think it's the best one so far, even better than 2. The music is superb and the sound effects are great too. The combat is really easy so far even though I haven't fought much yet. The story is pretty cool too as well as the graphics.
Boosting is pitiful.

I would just say that the achievements are way too easy since about 90% of them can be gotten on the first playthrough. I definately thought SH 3 was a lot more disturbing.

SH 1 to 3 were great games. SH4: The Room was horrible, and SH: Origins was even worse (most unresponsive controls I've ever seen - but I played in on my PS2, so that would probably explain it Stick out tongue [:P] ). SH: Homecoming is a step back into the right direction again. Responsive and intuitive controls, decent plot, suspenseful atmosphere.

One of the things I didn't like was how unbalanced the monsters are. Some will ignore you even if you shot them or hit them on the head with your trusted steel pipe (Lurkers on the Streets of Silent Hill), others will gang up on you and tear you to pieces (Schisms in police building).

The game was also much too linear. You were told where to go and could barely do any exploration. But still you had to do a fair amount of backtracking if you played it for the first time.

Although there are enough save points spread throughout the game (23 total IIRC), some are very far apart while others are practically next to eachother. In the last level alone you have 3 or 4 save points, and I know for a fact that between two of them you don't encounter a single enemy or puzzle.

Speaking of puzzles, doesn't anyone like games with puzzles anymore? SH1 had a lot of puzzles, and some of them were tricky to solve. But the puzzles in SH: Homecoming don't require you to actually think but only to find a few items that you stumble across without even searching for them.

Never played SH1 (Will eventually) And SH3 kind of irritated me. (It's really difficult to hit the dogs with the blade) But I have to admit SH4 was a really good game. The controls are a little faulty, but the story line was great, music was excellent, and they kept the melancholy and horror mood throughout the game.

SH Homecoming on the other hand wasn't that great of a game. I've never seen an enemy that will ignore you when you strike upon them. Puzzles were short, (except for one of the last ones, but you just have to look at it right.) Since it was made by Americans, of course, we'd aim for more violence than the actual story or the origin of the game.

Silent Hill Origins (I agree) was the worst. Horrid controls and the only thing that made the game scary was the very sight of the maps.

Homecoming is most likely the easiest and shortest Silent Hill game, but it's the best looking one to day.  I still think Silent Hill 1, 2, and 3 put this one to shame.  They could have done better with more care, time and effort.  The story line wasn't as thematic as the previous titles have been, nor was it as disturbing--yes, I do think the older ones hint to more disturbing issues.  It's worth a rent, but not exactly a purchase.

Agreed, When you beat this game you will feel as if you worked for something.
Since bugs in the game will frustrate you.
Oh the Combat system isn't perfect but I like it alot.

You have NO idea what Silent Hill is about then(no offence). I'm not talking about story wise either. Homecoming missed evrything that made Silent Hill what it is. The previous games were so damn scary and errie it's insane.

Having briefly played only one previous Silent Hill game (can't remember which one) I really wanted to get back into it. But having gotten rid of both of my PS1 and 2 that couldn't happen.

This game however really got my interest going for this series again.

Having just completed the game and got the first ending I might leave it a couple of days before chasing the other 4. Might even enjoy it more second time round.

   A lot of SH fans gave this game as well as the psp Origins a bad rep. Origins felt like a faithful prequel and it was pretty creepy for a handheld game. On topic though Homecoming is as close to a next gen 'survival' horror game as your going to get outside of the great but more actioney dead space. Homecoming is a good game and should give anyone a shudder or two up there back.

I would say it's not on par with SH 1-3 but it definitely beats the repetitive 4 and the combat here is the best in the series. I was going to go into more detail but I gotta run. Suffice to say if your a horror aficionado then you'll have a good time with Homecoming, and if your a SH fan then all the better because it carries the name faithfully.
