I've scored my fair share of free kicks so I hope my tactics can help.
There are two ways to take a free kick: Backspin and topspin, basically soft and hard.
When close to the goal (the wall is closer to the goal than the penalty spot) you use backspin. When the wall is further away from the goal, you use top spin.
You hold X to shoot. Whilst holding the X button, you hold down for backspin, up for topspin. 9 out of 10 times, you will need to fill the power meter up to half way, or just below. Any longer and it usually goes over the goal.
To add left/right spin, to curve the ball around the wall for example, you hold left or right respectively whilst also holding the X button and up or down. So when trying to score a free kick goal, you will for example be holding X, up and left all at the same time until the meter is filled halfway.
Now the aiming part. To curve the ball around the wall and into the goal, you'll want your player to be looking slightly off to the side of the goal (as if to miss). If you're looking at the goal and add spin inwards, you'll most likely shoot too much in the middle and the gk will have an easier job.
I usually aim straight at the last defender, the one furthest away from the middle of the goal. Aim as if trying to hit his head. Then hold the 3 button combination and you should be able to shoot some decent free kicks.
If none of this works, there's always the cheap way: use manual pass (press right analog stick upwards) to pass the ball underneath the wall. You'll need to practice the direction and once you've done that, you can score some pretty lousy goals. Doesn't always work though because some players in the wall don't jump.
thank you so much, i am gonna give this a shot in training and see how i make out, thank you for breaking it down by button i really appreciate it... this is the first soccer game i have played on xbox and i really enjoy it, i think the Free Kick and curving is the most awesome thing to do...
