What exactly are you having trouble with?
I had a hard time with this game at first too, but here are some general tips that made it easier for me:
I found re-mapping the 'block' and 'dodge'
buttons to the triggers made a big difference. It seemed a lot more natural than the bumpers.
You might also try adjusting the camera settings so that it is pulled
back higher so that you can see off screen spellcasters or shield-throwers and dodge or
reflect their attacks.
A lot of people complain about the "flawed" combat system (basically the complaint is it's hard to deal with a large group of enemies since the game will only register one block or dodge command at a time). I would suggest instead of complaining, try adjusting your tactics - maybe you aren't playing this game
as intended, or at least, as is optimal. What would happen to a real swords-women who allowed herself to be surrounded by a pack of enemies? Nothing good, I'd wager. Tyris can usually outrun most enemies, even on foot. Try to limit the number of enemies you fight at one time. Even if a large group of enemies are on screen, try to limit the number of them that can actually engage you at one given moment. Run! Wait for an attack, counter it, and then start the cycle again.
This is especially with the beasts - don't stand and fight - you will
get knocked down. Think of how a mounted knight fights. If he lets
himself get surrounded, he's screwed. Use the beast's mobility to your
advantage and fight only one or two enemies at a time. Run away if
enemies start to surround you and then charge back in. You can usually knock enemies over while running with a beast - no attack needed. It's great fun to bowl over a bunch enemies with a high speed lynth charge, to say nothing of the larger beasts.
That being said, the game can be very difficult, especially when fighting large groups of enemies. The best tip? Patience. Don't panic. Button mashing will get you killed. It's all about mastering the defensive system and then counterattacking.
Don't be afraid to use your spells - mana pots aren't that rare.
Sometimes enemies can be knocked off cliffs or bridges for quick kills. Knockback attacks and beast attacks work best for this.
Don't be afraid to use your beast's special attacks. It is better to drain a little health from a special attack rather than lose the beast to an enemy. Besides, beasts are a renewable resource in most cases, if yours dies, run back to the spawn point to get a new one. If it is low on health, kill it yourself and go get a new one. (mercy stroke?)
The battle arenas are good places to practice.
Anyways, those are my thoughts. Maybe they'll be helpful to some people.
