I never really got that far into the game but I don't wanted to be replaced by FFXIV or anything soon.

people will continue to play. 14 won't necessarily "replace" 11 but it will draw a lot of the 11 crowd yes. SE has said they'll continue to support 11 even after 14 comes out as long as enough people still play (which a lot I've talked to said they'll still play until they get comfortable with 14 or they'll quit once 11 is done (which won't happen for a long time).

SE has content planned still for the next year and I'm sure even after that too.

Look at other games as an example, and how it took time for people to covert over during a 2 year period or so. SE said it will continue the support, even content. New MMORPG's can be a pain at first, and not every jumps ship right away. I will be on it for a reason but not all my time. Friends will join when they can get it or the bugs are worked out.

I know a few that play on the 360. So hey will hold out. That also gives time for the WIki to be worked on to help people out, even tho this game is supposed to be more casual.

In the SE Q&A after the announcement of FFXIV, the developers said they will continue to support FFXI for another year after 14 launches. If they still have a high-enough user count, they will continue to support it beyond that, but at some point I'm sure they will shut down 11 in an attempt to convert those players over to 14. It's a hard truth to swallow with MMOs. As great as they are, they all eventualy die and get shut down.

If I had to make a guess. I would give FFXI about 18-24 months after 14's launch before the servers are shut down. The fact of the matter is, MMOs are expensive to maintain. Try supporting two of them at the same time. If SE can bring in a ton of new users to FFXIV without sacrificing the current user-base of FFXI, that will help things tremendously for both games.

It is for the PC as well. But FF11 was also a PS2 only game till the 360 came out then they made it for the 360.

Where did you see this? The last I heard is they will keep it alive as long as there are enough people that still want to play it.

That is what I gathered from the press conference as well. As long as there is a customer base to issue updates and expansions, they will still work with the game. My two cents added, I believe it is going to be a hard undertaking for SE to keep up both FFXI and FFXIV when it releases, I am sure they will keep up support for FFXI, but not too much longer after the release of the new MMO.

   QFT. Running 2 MMOs at once is a major undertaking from a personnel and financial stand-point. Not to mention you will be splitting your fanbase across 2 games. It's almost the same situation as the PS2 vs. the PS3. One of the big reasons the PS3 is struggling is because they haven't let go of the PS2. Developers are still making games for it, and it's still a major console. If Sony really wants the PS3 to be a major influence in this generation of consoles, they have to let go of the PS2.
   The same will hold true for FFXI vs. FFXIV. If SE really wants 14 to be successful, they have to get people from 11 to migrate to the new game.

From a personal standpoint i'm cautious about jumping to the new game as i have done a few times in the past with other MMO's as they've launched (WoW, Lotro). Everytime though i've ended up coming back to FFXI, obviously this new game will be more likely to please me than previous said games. But i am now wary of jumping ship to the new game purely because its new rather than because its better.
As for the current game lasting i'm sure its got plenty of life left in it, until we see any sign of merging of servers im confident there is more than enough players. Merging of servers is always a good sign of a game winding down so as i say until we see talk of that i dont think we need worry.

One final point would be the new game is still 18 months away assuming they hit launch planned dates, which judging most games in general never happens. personally i'd probably expect it to launch easter of the following year (20 months from now). Also just wondering if anyone has heard anything on whether they expect to do a global launch? i know FFXI was JP release sometime before the rest of the world.

For me it whont last long from now on .. its allready very hard to find people for Missions is it CoP or Nation or any else not end game related.. botters, RMT , SMN burns hurt it even more ,, so the fun to play this game turns in frustration trying to fiend ppl to do stuff i need with

good news it's been reported that a PS3 version of Final Fantasy 11 is coming soon. which means Square is not leaving FF11 behind after they release FF14. why else would they bother to re-release a dated MMO for PS3.

They keep changing it lol. I think they will shut down 11 eventually, would be stupid tho. what they should do is go ahead and make 11 free after 14, but I really doubt they would. that would be cool. After i heard about 14 I decided to cancle my content ID. I'm going to wait for it. no point in paying monthly and building a char up even more, yet 11 is pimp ***.

There not doing FFXI on the PS3  you can play via emulation if you have an older PS3.

THe limited at launch exclusive side of FF XIV (I plan to play on the superior PC anyways) may not hold. At current rate the game won't be ready for 2010. IT 50/50 right now. It will rpobably end up launchign on all 3 enviroments to keep the existign gamer base.

Not if your in UK you cannot as it's region locked on ps2 & not all ps£ suuport backwords gaming. Ffxi for has died as soon as news broke over ff14, I've not played ffxi since the mog bonanza was on, as my servers gotten really *** & also being in gmt timezone makes getting stuff impossible (pandemonium server )

There are currently rumors circulating that Sony is developing a firmware update for all PS3s to make them backwards compatible through an emulation software update. This would make it possible for gamers who don't have one of the original PS3s with built-in backwards compatibility to play FFXI on a new system. The article is just rumor though, and it doesn't say if it will cover the whole library or just select titles.

Sadly still doesn't take away the fact that you cannot buy ps2 version of ffxi in the UK :( so defeats the object of doing this update/emulation

Point taken, but it helps the rest of the regions who can buy the PS2 version to keep the game going that much longer.

Again mainly NTSC regions & other much cooler countries will get it but sadly the UK gets left behind & ignored again

I've thought Long & hard over my decision to quit or suck it up & find a way to progress to endgame status & joy..... But after a recent punt into a dynamis run ( which wennt full distance yet I didn't get any decent items/gear, just crappy relic ) & wasn't impressed & I haven't been able to rejoin another run or get help with gaining access to sea & finishing off cop or even finishing bastok 6-2... Main issuse is my GMT timezone & my work life. So I'm going to quit for good, as after 3 yrs I'm still just doing same old BS since day one & im really bored now
