..Anything like lost odyssey? Gameplay wise anyway, because i absolutely LOVE Lost Odyssey and want another game just like it. No Spoilers please :)

You might want to at least rent it. In my humble opinion, it's no Lost Odyssey. I think it's a decent game if you can get past all the cuteness and sometimes annoying characters. It's a pretty expansive game though. You'll get plenty of gameplay out of it. The battle system is a little simpler than LO also. I missed not being able to use the trigger on enemies. It depends on your tastes really. It is a good game, but don't compare it to LO, it might not hold up.


I'm actually working on BD right now. As soon as I'm done, I'm cracking open Star Ocean 4. SO4 may be a better choice if you want something closer to LO. From what I can tell, it's a little less cutesy than BD.

Beware fanboys: try FFXII. You won't be disappointed.

Also the Job System is exactly the same as Final Fantasy 5 (which is the best job system in the Final Fantasy series imo). Defo worth a play. I got my copy for a fiver.

Star Ocean isn't that good.  I'd still play through it, but it's pretty bland imo.  Some of the parts are rather neat though.

As for Blue Dragon, I like it a lot.  It's an extremely polished warm hearted jrpg. 

When it comes to jrpgs, assuming you're a fan of the whole genre
- definately buy Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon
- maybe get Infinite Undiscovery for a bit cheaper, $20ish.  Good game, but takes about 4 hours to start and is a 20 hour game.  Pretty good, not the best though
- Star Ocean you might for, dunno, $20 again?  Definately not as good as any  of the above, but still worth a playthrough. Story is weak and borders the noxexistant.
- Last Remnant is err....only if you have a laptop to go on while playing (the battle scenes take so long, so passive).  I'd say avoid it.

--> I haven't played Tales of Vesperia, Enchanted Arms, nor Eternal Sonata.  I'd say, based on my guess, to get Tales and Eternal Sonata.  Enchanted Arms I can't comment on at all, but it looks more bland than the rest.

Blue Dragon is a well polished game. And I love the hair metal during boss fights, should be in every game too. I've played the demo for Tales and Sonata. I felt they were way to simple in the battle system. They're good games from what I can tell, just not my cup of tea. I like my jrpgs as convoluted as possible in the battle and leveling systems. I guess it's a byproduct of playing Final Fantasy for 20 years.


Everyone should at least try them though. Just because I don't care for it doesn't mean you should pass it up. I always at least demo every rpg out there. Because you never know if one is gonna click for you, and be one of your favorite games.

If your wanting gamerscore I'd advise you to put the rest on hold and give it a few weeks of solid play, If you wanna play it for fun, dont even think bout it, just go buy it now! I'm on my 4th New Game+ due to missing things in one play through and having to re-do it all, it becomes doable at middle of Disc 3 i think it is, it unlocks on the main menu, when you do a new game plus you get all your items,accessories and class levels/char levels carried over, its like porting your current data across to a fresh start, Only items that dont carry over are story items like "device" items which you'll learn about in the game. Getting all 5 Shadows level 99 in all available classes is a BORE, seriously It took days of afk killing penguins while watching movies, i killed 17,000+ Penguins before I got my achievements, Im working on the Character levels now as I type this,6 levels togo for 4 chars, 1 is 99 (shu) atm. Theres plenty of side quests to keep you busy, items from side quests contribute to your achievements but the side quests themselve dont have achievements, collecting all items, unlocking all barrier, finding all warp locations ect. The game is a Doable 1000, but takes a heck of alot of time, its very repetitive after 2 play through, Its a lengthy game to just do story, not too lengthy but enough to satisfy a rpg lover. If your a FF or a DBZ fan its great to play, if your both.... Its a perfect buy, It only costs £5.00 these days brand new in a local shop, for 3 discs and a awesome game... you cant go wrong. Now, time to go and finish up, 1,000/1,000 soon \o/

In Lost Odyssey your Character Equip Weapons, Rings, and Accessories.
In Blue Dragon all your equips are braclets, necklaces, earrings, rings, and you cant equip accessories until later in the game.
 
In LO you have an Aim ring that if you get a good you do normal dmg, perfect gives you extra dmg, bad well you know how it goes. Imortals even get to add additional skills like immune to poison or guard heal.
 
IN BD theres no ring to aim with you attack through your shadow, you get classes to choose from skills from those classes are to be equipped (like in FFT).
 
In LO you explore the world map rather simply, by clicking on your next destination and going there. When you get the boat you get to explore a bit. When in duneons you get random encounters.
 
IN BD you have an overworld map you have to navigate through it to get to the next destination, encounters wether on the worldmap or in a dungeon are found on the screen, you can avoid, ambush, or be suprised, you can even link encounters, ot cause a monster battle (where monsters attack each other).
 
LO is more serious and BD more comical.
 
LO has a Level Cap per objective dungeon, by a Level Cap I mean that the exp you gain upon reaching a certain Level is reduced to almost nothing. So you cant grind very well (unless you spend dozens of hours building up that 1% to 100%). At least you cant grind very well until Disc 4.
 
In BD rather than cap the exp you gain, you just need more to Lv, you also need SP to Level your class, and the Field Barrier Skill can let you do that at the expense of MP w/o having to fight anything.

So far I dont think they are too much Alike. The Tone i LO allows itself to be taken alot more seriously than that of BD.

LO has an ill story, a somewhat more engaging batttle scheme, better characters and better enemies.

BD has a typical story, the battle system is pretty traditional, by traveling on the map ( walking around) is a little mor einterestin in BD becasue you can see enemies and almost anything can be searched. Characters in BD grate my nerves a lil  ( just me) and the enemies are mostly goofy.

I think its going to be hard to get emotionally investedin BD they same way one might with LO ( Dreams and cutscenes.) But BD is proving to be fun so far ( I've only played like 5 hours lol, so this little comparison may be a bit biased)

Blue Dragon can be annoyingly cutesy, and getting the achievements is real hard work, but if you look underneath the childish veneer, the underlying rpg is incredibly solid. If I'm honest, I preferred Lost Odyssey; it's far more adult, and the system seems a bit more polished. However, other than Temple of Enlightenment, the side quests and bosses were significantly easier, and that's not really a good thing. It's a bit more epic, but it's a bit less challenging. The same goes for the achievements, in that it's super easy to get 700+ in LO, but you've really got to work for more than a hundred or so in BD.

As far as other RPGs are concerned, Infinite Undiscovery is a good fun action j-rpg, but is incredibly short, and the sheer amount of controllable characters kind of dilutes the story development. It's got a good crafting system, though, and the extra dungeon is fun if you enjoy the battle system. It's worth it if you can pick it up for fairly cheap, providing you like action rpgs. If you don't this probably isn't for you, especially as it's so short. Typical tri-ace title.

Eternal Sonata is a gorgeous game, and I couldn't help be mesmerised when I first saw it. It did seem a bit lacking, though, and the initial excitement wore off incredibly quickly. It's quite short, and you're best off completing it in one fell swoop; after playing another game you're unlikely to just pick it up and carry on. Not sure why, especially as I loved it so much initially, but I just can't get back into this game. Again, only pick it up if you're into action rpgs, as it wont really have anything to offer if you don't.

Enchanted Arms was pretty rubbish.  Well, as a game, it was okay, and the presentation was pretty good, but I just couldn't enjoy the battle system, the characters annoyed me far more than anything in Blue Dragon, and being able to powerlevel your characters to god-like levels after a few hours of gameplay could really take the bite out of it. If you like strategy rpgs, you might want to pick this up, but otherwise it's worth missing out.

The Last Remnant has an interesting battle system, but it doesn't offer you enough control. The characters seem very weak, and the story is even more so. It's long, but it's only long because of epic battles (which you may or may not enjoy). You can also die at any minute, so 'save paranoia' is a frequent ailment. If I'm completely honest, I don't think this is worth picking up at all, but if you're fed up with all the short rpgs around and you just want a long rpg to play, I guess you may want it.

Phantasy Star Universe is a hidden gem of a game, imo. The storyline is great, and overall it's just a solid action rpg. It's not all that long, but you don't really notice that, and you can have a lot of fun levelling your partner machine, synthesising new items and such. If you've played a bunch of other rpgs and just want something to tide you over until FFXIII (or whatever other rpg it is you're looking forward to - I played this when I was waiting for Star Ocean) it's a great choice, as you can pick it up for £5 in most places.

Star Ocean is brilliant. I've only played it for 9 hours so far, but I've loved every minute. I've heard lots of complaints about characters and such, but I don't share any of those qualms. It's exactly what I wanted in an rpg, and although there are minor issues with walking around being slightly clumsy, you  hardly notice. The story is pretty interesting, the graphics are lush, and the battle system offers a little more than the typical action-rpg battles that you'll find in Infinite Undiscovery, Phantasy Star Universe and Eternal Sonata.

So yeah, I think Blue Dragon is fairly similar to Lost Odyssey, when compared to the other 360 titles. It's got a similar battle system and a nice long story, and gives you plenty to do outside of that. I definitely think it's one of the better rpgs on the market, but if you can't get over cutesy characters, you may have difficulty appreciating what a good rpg it is.
