I personally will use my first 3 attempts to examine the lock, then use my last two as guesses at the combo. It has worked well for me so far. I have only failed once.

I pretty much do the same thing. It depends on how many attempts I have.

If I only have like 3 or 4 attempts, I will guess say 50 then either 25 or 75 depending on if it's higher or lower, then 1-2 more random guesses in between (if it's between 50 and 25/75).

I will check to see if its already unlocked, if its not then I just go on doing whatever it was that I was doing.

Yup, I am not going to bother trying to figure out the combination on it, so I will click on it to see if its unlocked and opens right away, if it doesn't I just move along.

Interesting, because the good stuff is in the locked caskets. For example, just last night I got a Pile Chain from a locked casket in E. Saratabaruta. It's Ex/Rare so I can't sell it /sigh. But it's a neck piece for all races/jobs lvl. 3 it gives +3 to HP and +1 to accuracy.

Most of the stuff you get isn't nearly as good as this (usually just non-temporary versions of the other items you get), but it's worth a try to unlock it just to see what you get if you're not in a rush to do something else.

The are a lot of good rare/ex items in coffers, have a few pieces with +5 evasion, INT and more for low levels. Worth the time to try and unlock them.

Ya I basically do the same thing, use as many chances as I can till last two are left examining and trying to figure out what it is from those hints.

It all depends though if I get redundent clues, like 1st # is 1,2 or 3; number is between 12 and 38, 1st # is odd.

Which really sucks when you only get 4 chances sometimes. Which btw, the amount of chances does not effect whats in it. I have gotten really good items on 4, 5 and 6 chance caskets.

Oh and if I only get four chances I may use all chances but 1 to get hints, then try it.But yet still, it depends on hints.

On good days I have been 90% opening.

I even got someone amazed one day. lol. I had opened like4 or 5 in a row and dude was like:
1st: no repsonse.
2nd: wow.... how do u do that.(and I told him)
3rd: no response.
4rth: omg
5th: wtf!!!

all I could do is laugh.


If you pass up on opening these in higher areas like Sky, Cape Terrigan, Ro’meave; then you are missing out on some really good rare/ex gear, as well as items that sell for a good amount of gil to an NPC. For example in Cape terrigan one of the many peices of gear that drop are Darksteel Breeches, which sell for 7.7k to an NPC.

Another example is that I got a Caract Choker in Sky, +5 to all elemental defenses, and Magic Atk Bonus +2.
