I don't know which is this achievement in particular, but if it's one of the ones related to the "no hit received in mini games using the mecha", notice that also if you get hit by machine-guns you won't get the achievement. So it can seem that you are not being hit because you are full health and so on, but you actually were hit at least once by them. Just be quick in destroying everything.

i just got the second mecha achievement and nearly got bombed out of existance...granted it was 3 am and i have killed about 3000 haunted pelicans or something levelling up

Just to expand on what was said above... when you've almost finished and the screen fades out, do NOT let down your guard, being hit in this period of time will also stop the achievement from unlocking.
