Unlock clothes for avatar based on game achievements

Plat4rmr 02-05-2009, 1:57 PM
I heard this is coming. Rave said that developers can incorporate this into the achievements. I think it would be so rad to outfit my avatar with Brotherhood of Steel power armor. Am I right on this? This is coming right?

I really hope they do this. The choices for your avatar are so limited at the moment.

I can't get confirmation, but I hope so too. We met with Microsoft shortly before the NXE launch for an official tour and demo, and they confirmed that there is no technical reason why it cannot be done, but they would not confirm whether people are doing it/are going to be allowed to do it.

I think we users all see it as an extension of the gamerpic -- and those have been bundled with games or achievements or what have you, so why not Avatar clothing the same way? I think the missing piece is knowing how much value MS places on them, and whether this idea would conflict with their alternate plans for the Avatar store when it launches. Hopefully not, hopefully it's a value-add thing.

I hope that does happen, they need a much larger selection, it is so small right now.

It may take away sales from the Avatar store but I think it would also boost game sales if there was exclusive Avatar clothing and accessories that you could only get by unlocking it with an achievement.

For some odd reason I also hope that if it does go into effect then they also have older developed games retro in some for people that have completed their games/achievements...

Not sure why I would want that.

I hope Bethesda make a Pip Boy for our avatars.

I don't know if unlockable avatar clothes would sell games, but it would be a nice little bonus.

Ooh I'd love to have the full Crusader's armor or Umbra from Oblivion on my avatar. That would be too cool.

You gotta pay the troll toll.

I'd take some Elven armor.

I could honestly care less about the Micro$oft clothing. It is just boring generic clothes. But, I would love to have my avatar with something that says I accomplished something, or I made a certain level in a game. Micro$oft needs to leave it alone, and let the community decide how it works (mostly). Why have everyone looking the same? Look at Home. It's boring.

I would not mind one of the outfits from Prince of Persia.  I hope they hurry up and offer something to us for our avatars besides the boring "international" line of clothing.  My avatar is getting boring really fast.

Well it certainly wouldn't HURT to have this feature on XBL. I'd like it to happen, personally.

The only thing I've wanted for my avatar, even before the avatars came out, was a friggin' halo over my head or a Keffiyeh. >_<

Or both.

I had an interresting thought. When 360 first came out and the idea of achievements and gamerscore was introduced to us, M$ had said that, eventually, they wanted your gamerscore to have some sort of value more than for bragging rights. Insted of going the PSN route, and charging real world money for clothes and accessories, what if you could use yous gamer points to unlock or purchase stuff? Of course along with unlocking stuff via an achievement system in some games. Even to be able to gift stuff to friends so I can get Azzy his silly halo and get him to shut up about it. Devil [6]

I thought that I had read somewhere that it was possible, just nobody was really doing it yet.  It will likely be just shirts, pants, etc.  Though if they give us authentic gear make mine the Green Castle Crasher Knight!

Wow! That'd be pretty cool...

... but what about guys like me? I really don't game for the GS because I really don't have the time. It'd be great for the hardcore gamers, but what about the casual? Yeah, we're the lame guys who everyone caters to and we tend to tick the hardcores for dumbing down the gaming world, but we also got a say.

Why not, oh I don't know, make it truly customizable? Like perhaps the ability to choose our own colors? Add shapes or even pictures? (Copyright infringement ftw, but cool all the same) Or... what about making it as customizable as RB and RB2? That is perhaps the 2nd longest I've ever took customizing a character behind Oblivion.

This way would please both the hardcore (by playing to their endless amounts of time or copious amounts of attention to details) and the casual (who just want to see a black Xbox shirt or a picture of their dog on their hat). Just a thought

I didn't think the character creation in RB2 was customizable enough. I wanted more choices for the face and hair, and more accessories. Character customization adds a lot to the enjoyment I get out of a game.

Well, I've read that it's not something Micro$oft is stopping. It's a feature that developers haven't utilized as of yet. The gaming community can let them know that this is something we are interested in having available to use. I personally am not willing to pay Micro$oft space dollars to get some stupid digital T-shirt.

Definitely agree with that, plat4mer... unless it was a replica Optimus Prime.  Then maybe...

We pay for those pretty much now with themes and gamerpics. It's all pretty much 30-50 lines of code for $0.50-$2.00. I do, however, think it should be a lower price factor, maybe 5-10 points per clothing (of even 1-5). Free stuff would be great, too, but I'll always know Microsoft as M$. Wink [;)]

If I could get Gears Armor, or my outfit from Fable 2, or the outfits from Fallout 3.  I could see getting complete outfits, that might be worth some money.  Maybe a retro Dr.Pepper t-shirt.

From Fallout I'd want a Raider spiked armor with the psycho tic helmet, or the brotherhood outcast power armor. My ideal suit though, would be Commander Shepard from Mass Effect's N7 armor, or a mask to look like a Krogan or Turian.

How about if after winning  a race in say Dirt or Grid, you unlocked not just a new sponsor, but a cool driving outfit, with your sponsors logos and you were holding a trophy.  that would be sweet.

i'd like to see some of Starkiller's costumes from SW:TFU, or Shepard's Spectre Armor from ME. or even white tee's with game characters on them (castle crashers?) anything!

LK's 5 I cant wait to play:

1) Mass Effect 2 2) FF13 3) Modern Warfare 2 4) Dragon Age: Origins 5) Tekken 6

It's so shallow, but I wouldn't buy anything if it actually lowered the number on my Gamercard. I like seeing that for me, nevermind showing it off to others, and if I dropped 1000 points on new threads, I'd still want my Gamerscore to stay the same.

I have a question about all this... So if this does eventually happen, then what kind of clothes are you going to get from a game that is less obvious than a game such as Fallout 3 or Star Wars TFU? I mean a game like Need For Speed or something, you know, a racing game or something like it without much personality in the characters and more in the cars... Are we going to get shirts with a car logo? While the more obvious games seem to have a good thing going for them, other games will be left out eventually. There needs to be a lot of thinking before this (achievement clothes) actually happens.
