I was thinking of buying one of these games, but don't know which one is better. Are they different or is Trouble in Paradise just an expansion?

Both, I just got vp a week ago and maxed it out, now onto tip, I feel like good going into TIP with a working knowledge of viva. Also I have a copy a viva pinata I would be more than happy to sell dirt cheap since Im done with it

TiP. Its the sequel so there a lot more pinatas and new content

Each is a great game on their own.  However I think if you play TIP first you will find the controls a bit frustrating when you play the first one as they made some improvements in the controls in TIP. 

So I guess my .02 would be to play them both, and play them in order.

VP:TIP is pretty much what we wanted VP:Classic to be. I'd say definitely go with TIP.
