The external hard drive has to be formatted to the FAT32 file system, unfortunately if you do this it will erase all of the data on it. You could move all of the data onto your computer, format the external hard drive to FAT32, then move everything back.

In Windows Media Player have you allowed your Xbox 360 under Media Sharing?

Thus I refute thee.

if the ext hdd is attached directly to the xbox it has to be fat32. but i had it reading files when it was attached to the pc running xp. and streaming to the xbox.

yes have media sharing enabled

Yes, if you want to attach it it will have to be FAT32. The file system right now is probably NTSC; your computer can read pretty much any file system, but the Xbox 360 is severely limited.

Do you have the external hard drive connected to your computer when you try to stream your media? What happens when you try to add the files to your library?
