In-game advertising hits Kiwi screens

Teljam 05-17-2009, 11:58 PM

Kiwi brands are about to grace some of the world’s most travelled cyber-territory as in-game advertising hits New Zealand this month, following highly-successful roll-outs internationally.

Frucor is using in-game billboards and posters in Xbox 360 and PC games to launch a new energy drink called INK targeted at young men.

The ads feature in 24 Xbox 360 and PC games and run for six weeks during May and June. They’re also appearing on TV, in cinemas and online.

The in-game advertising system enables Xbox 360 and PC gamers to see New Zealand-centric advertising for the first time in their console games.

This visualisation technology comes from Microsoft-owned Massive Incorporated which feeds the ads into each player’s gaming session through their existing broadband connection.

Xbox New Zealand’s Tom Hunt says: "Instead of flashing past an ad for some product that’s of no interest, gamers can now feel more at home with a local product such as INK. This could be in the form of a billboard in a car racing game or a sponsored replay in a sports game."

Frucor’s Iaan Buchanan says this new medium enables the brand to reach the elusive 15-24yr old market.

"Teaming up ad content with the relevant audience and the right medium is critical.  For Frucor and INK, the benefit is in selecting games that are relevant to the brand’s target market. For example, INK has chosen gaming titles based on the attitude ‘the absence of fear’ which enables us to place the product within highly relevant content that expresses that core brand idea."

Massive Inc. Regional Sales Manager, Brian Neal adds that in-game advertising brings marketing to a whole new level.  This technology also enables brand managers to ‘geo-target’ ads to regional or world-wide markets.

Massive Inc. campaigns have run in the US, the UK, Europe, Canada, Korea and Australia with automotive and entertainment brands prominent amongst advertisers.

Frucor’s media agency for the INK in-game advertising campaign is OMD New Zealand.

"We are delighted to be working with Massive Incorporated on executing a market first media innovation in New Zealand for Frucor," says Chris Riley, Director of Digital – OMD New Zealand.

"Reaching the gaming audience has always proved challenging for advertisers – especially the core male 18-24 demo.  The increasing popularity of gaming has eroded the time this key audience now spends with traditional channels.  It’s a major breakthrough for OMD, to now be communicating with this important demographic whilst they are highly engaged and receptive to relevant brands and messaging."

Interestingly, the titles to include these are already out, so if you see any billboards in some of the games you're playing, let us know what you think.

The ads I saw from screenshots with the press release we're pretty cool, and is nice to see local content in games we are playing.

In Saints Row 2...I'm in Canada and I've seen advertising for Movies like The Punisher:Warzone to Friday the 13th, to Captain Morgan's Rum to advertisements from Rogers Wireless (Cell Phones)...as long as the advertising is in a form like this, I dont have a problem with it, but if they toss in comercials for loading screens or it impedes gameplay in anyway, I have a real issue with that.

I think this is a good thing, seeing local products.  It is pretty interesting technology too.

Here is an example.

I ignore in-game advertising just like I skip commercials on my DVR.

Ignoring and skipping are two different things.  You can't skip the in-game stuff unless you disconnect from the tubes.

I like TV commercials, I call them "short programs".  Often they are better then the programs inbetween.  :)

It was a Series made for TV back in the early 80's about Aliens supposedly coming to earth in peace, but they were actually here to harvest us for food...and I believe that was one of the last things Robert Englund (Aka. Freddy Kruger) did before the Nightmare on Elm Street Movies.  As a kid I thought it was pretty cool, nothing like that on tv before, but only lasted for a year and apparently they are remaking it.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_(2009_TV_series) Cool!

"V" was a great show, but I've got half an idea we never got the whole series out here or TVNZ didn't buy the second series or something.

Back on topic - I've spotted the INK ads in PGR 4 anyone else seen them in the wild?

More importantly will the inclusion of advertising in our games reduce the price we have to pay for them???

Also someone mentioned Cptn Morgan Rum adverts in a game. Isn't advertising alcohol in a game getting a bit boarderline???

First off, I doubt that it would reduce the prices we have to pay, but it definately will increase the profits made for the companies involved...and I was the one who posted seeing the Captain Morgan Ads...they were in Saints Row 2, it is a mature rated game, but most places you have to be 18 to buy or rent a M rated game.

This is where it gets a lil fuzzy, now depending on where you live...for example here in Ontario, Canada you have to be 19 to purchase and consume liquor and I think all of the USA you have to be 21...isnt that promoting drinking to the wrong age group?

I'm sure all in-game advertising complies with local laws where ever you are and it should be blocked by parental controls and age limits attatched to you Live account.

I think it is fine if it is done tastefully.  Captain Morgan would fit right in with Age of Booty.  :)

Yeah i wondered about the "advertising alcohol to minors" issue, but just figured that they'd limit it to R18 games. I'm all for in-game advertising, as long as it's fairly unobtrusive. Don't mind the odd billboard or bus-stop advertisement, but once it starts getting in the way (even with load screens), i'll start steering clear of that developers games. And as Tusock has mentioned, will in-game ads reduce the price of said game? If these latest $140 price points we're seeing are any indication, probably not.
