I recently had to return my xbox for repair services, and I just got a refurbished xbox back tonight. When I put in the FFXI disc, the playonline viewer does not launch. Instead an error message pops up telling me I need to re-download the game. That'd be all fine and well, providing I could GET to the playonline viewer to uninstall it.

Has anyone out there had this happen to them? How did you fix the problem?

Welcome to the I hate Microsoft's NXE update club.  This problem is a direct result of that little gem of an update.

Sadly ...you must re-install PlayOnline Viewer ...and even worse you must re-download and install FFXI along with all 5 hours of updates.

I'm sorry .... it will eventually happen to all, your time has come.

Same exact problem just happened to me today. I just got my box back from repair this week and now the game won't launch. I get that message saying I need to re-download the game.  How do I re-download it if I can't even launch the game? I just want to un-install the game to free up hard drive space. The installed game doesn't even show up in your systems memory so how do I delete it? Its wasting 6 gigs of my hard drive.

It's pretty lame.  The only way to uninstall it is to launch the play online's front end and choose instead of login, go down the list of options to install/uninstall.

If you cant even get the front end loaded... well... your crap out of luck.

it could be many things actually.
it could be your disc,ive had mine crap out a few times.oly to have them work later on,(6 mnths).

you could try to erase your entire hdd with the transfer cable if you have two hdd's.

for some reason my disc doesnt boot with my old 360 and with a newish disc.but does on my new jasper 360 and very old and scratched one.

weird.but i dont care no more since ive been able to go cold turkey and quit the game.

its been 6 mnths now,and every once in awile i jones for some redmage action.ive learned that its best to just say no,and not play.because,i know what will happen if i "just play for a few minutes.its happened before.i took it as a sign from god actually,stop playing or ill break your 360 again he said.after 8 referbs playing ffx1 and smooth sailing since.i decided to listen.

I finally got it to work that day. I had to keep putting in the disc over and over until randomly it launched the play online viewer.  You then have to uninstall EVERYTHING, because even if you only update the viewer, FFXI won't work. So once you uninstall everything, then you re download it all for the 5-6 hours it takes. It was very frustrating but at least I'm playing XI again :)
