Whats with Cervantes
Ok so i played like 20 - 25 matches last night and only 1 or 2 of them were against ppl that didn't use Cervantes. I don't mind fighting him but wtf, like everyone is using him. He is not the only one in the game there are others. Does it really mean that much to win???? I really like the game because its a good fast paced game, but it gets boring fighting the same guy all the time.

Stop playing ranked. Play player to see much more variety.

Mate there is 1 good thing about fighting the same character and that is you get to learn that characters moves and what to do against them. I hardly ever loose to someone playing as Cervantes as everyone seems to do the same three moves and I know exactly how to fight it.

Totally agree with hoggy.  I have the same problem in SFIV with using a rarely used character in Fei Long while I'm constantly facing Ken or Sagat.  At first I was so sick of it cuz they are higher tiered characters that are easier to win with...but now the tables have been turned and I kick some serious butt with my rarely used character mainly because of the fact that they don't know how to face him while I can predict their moves as if they were syndicated reruns.

Re: Whats with Cervantes
I agree...I get bored of fighting Cervantes because litterally 25% of everyone I fight on ranked games chooses him...and very few are actually skilled at his attacks...they just spam the same 3 moves with a couple of X and Y hits peppered in! There is the ever annoying and oft repeated lightning in the sky and straight down gaurdbreak attack, the rediculous shot to the face no matter the distance (in a edge weapon fighting game?) and the "I'm too NOOB to do anything else" spinning flying straight at you attack. Granted every one of those is easily avoidable but really folk he has other moves...use them! then there is the SUPERNOOB fly up in the air lightning gaurdbreak attack continuously about 37 1/2 times in a row...could a player show less skill? I find myself feeling real respect for those who use the much less played characters and know how to rock them! Setsuka, Talim, Taki, even Rock and Hilde from time to time. And when I see a good Lizardman...Awesome! Seriously...there are more players in the game than just Cervantes, Kilik, Nightmare, and Amy.

When a Cervantes player spams those moves it simple enough to just guard impact and grab. (or show them some real skill and punish them with combos)

Re: Whats with Cervantes
I've been fighting against Cervantes for a long time, and i really don't mind anything he does anymore: the cheap double sworded lows, the flying, even the gun is a piece of cake.
But they have to do something about that cheap freakin A+B attack.
You can't see it coming; it looks like a LOW, but it's a MID; it hits within the first couple of frames; and worse than all that, it's a stunner.  people don't even have to spam that attack.  just mix it in nice and creatively and rack up the wins..

This has been an on going debate, i know, but Cervantes is a broken character, that's why everybody uses him.

Re: Whats with Cervantes
It's (A+B) shakeable, and unsafe. So it really isn't that bad at being "cheap".

It's also punishable on block.  Free fast A,A (or k,k for Yun) on block.  If you can't punish it online, then stop playing online lol.

Also as far as it looking like a low, lots of moves look like they'll hit one spot, but actually hit another.  Part of learning the game is learning to recognize these moves.

Re: Whats with Cervantes
shakeable?  yeah, online, that can be a tough one.  Not to mention, when you are stunned, he will usually have the follow up attacks already buffered in.  Sure, i'm not saying I never blocked that attack before, but it's way fast. I usually have to be blocking already premeditatively before the attack takes place.  It's more luck than anything else.  And like I said, someone who knows how to mix it, has a great advantage.  You said "recognize", that's my problem with it.  by the time you see any sign of this attack, it's usually too late.

As for "stop playing on-line".   I honestly don't have time for anything else.

And just to get back to the topic:  If Cervantes is such a balanced character, why does everybody feel compelled to use him?

Re: Whats with Cervantes

Lots of new people like to use him because he has "cool" moves. Alot of these cool moves are trash though.

Actual character balance has absolutely nothing to do with online shenanigans.  Internet Calibur is internet.

Anyway, you live IN NYC.  I see you didn't post up any interest in that NJ tourney that all the NYC players go to, I dunno what your work schedule is like but you can take off one Saturday, I'd think.  It's not like you don't have access to one of the most comprehensive public transportation systems in the WORLD, because you do.  There's really very little excuse for not showing up offline in your situation, except lack of motivation to do so.

Again, you're not even playing the same game when you go online.  If you would go to even just ONE of these events, you'd see that.  Everyone that's come from online and played offline has said the same thing.

p.s. A+B is easy as hell to shake offline.

I hear what you're saying about the off-line experience, but it's sad to think that in order for someone to have a decent verse battle you have to find a time and a place, travel all these miles and maybe even pay some money.  And I'm sure off-line people have their "shenanigans" as well.
I'm sure people don't just stand there while you 'shake' and do whatever it is you do.

I'm defining shenanigans specifically as stuff that becomes noticeably more effective online than off.  Stuff like Cervy's teleport, slow low sweeps, they aren't 100% useless offline, but they carry FAR more risk because people can react to them.  There's always going to be tricks in fighting games, that's part of learning and improving is finding ways to counter it all.  But when you throw lag into the equation, it dumbs down the game and makes mixups as simple as just picking a move, when in reality it's not that simple at the top.

And I agree that it'd be better if you COULD have solid online play, it'd be great.  But Calibur doesn't have that.  No fighter does yet, some are much better than others (VF5, BlazBlue) but none are quite there yet.  Plus you're just sitting there alone, when you could be out socializing with people that have a similar interest.  It's worth doing at least once, especially since you really have no reason NOT to, living in NYC.
