Anyone interested in having another Hexathon?
We're coming up to the 2nd anniversary of the 1st one and we seem to have a good mix of members now, is it now time to consider hosting another one? Would you take part if one was created?

C'mon, Flobby, you know you want to!Wink [;)]

I was just thinking about this the other day! That's pretty funny!

Anyway, I would be in for sure. I may not have what it takes to win yet, but I will try my hardest!

Of course I am in; but are we talking marathon, timed, or that other mode that none of us play(I think it starts with a S). Does any one know who won each tier of the last one?  My computer can not show the picture that had the results.

I can't remember who won Tier 3 (it was a friend of Gordy's) but I do remember that the winner of Tier 1 was Gordy (after oldtaco pulled himself out of the competition) - Gordy ultimately finished that same game with a score of exactly 2 Trillion if memory serves me correctly...

The winner of Tier 2 was SilentxDonkey.  (He kinda fell off the planet - I know he got real discouraged with Hexic and swore it off)...

Anyway, it would be awesome to see a Hexathon II.  Only question is would there be enough interested players?

The Hexathon was a month-long tournament (held in July 2007).  Competitors were separated into 3 different categories:
Tier 1 for players that had completed at least 1 MMC
Tier 2 for players that had the Pooh-Bah achievement but had never done an MMC
Tier 3 for players that had not gotten the Pooh-Bah

The highest cumulative score in each Tier received MS Points as a prize.  (Donated by Jammytea, oldtaco, and myself - please God forgive me if someone else donated and I forgot!!!)  I think we gave away something like 8000 Points (3200 each to the winners of Tier 1 and 2 and 1600 to Tier 3? )

Verification of scoring (and the correct Tier) was done at the beginning of the month and at the end of the month via pictures that had to be submitted by the contestants.

Tier 3 winner: that was good ol' Aye Aye Captain! (i Captin i), Capitalisation might be wrong there...

Anyway, it looks like we won't have to worry about Tier 1...but what about the other 2? I suppose we could have an "Elite Hexathon" if nothing else.

Thanks Meister!

I just looked at hexic.info and noticed the announcement was still up there about the Hexathon - I had COMPLETELY forgotten that Brassman donated MS Points too (sorry Brassman!!!).  We gave away 10,100 points total to the winners.

As much as I would like to see something like this again - I have serious doubts we'd get much involvement.  Don't forget I did try to get a "Call your Shot" tourney going awhile back and that went over about as well as a Fart in Church.

*shakes fist* "Curse you XBox and your seemingly endless treasure trove of addicting games! - don't you realize that you have wrecked what used to be a vibrant community???  CURSE YOOOOOOUUUUUUU!!!!!"

LOL!

Yeah, I know what you mean re: the addictive games (I wouldn't quite go as far as endless, though). Unless you play one or more of the following:

Gears of War (1+2)

CoD (4 and 5)

Halo (2 and 3)

and only a smattering of others I've missed, then you won't get much interest.Sad [:(]

Its a good idea. I just need to end my previous game, you know, from last Hexathon lol!

I think we should do a Hexathon, based around new ideas, tests and if we're really lucky, newer/better scoring methods!

Ofcourse fundamentally it should be based around score (as always) its just people with bold ideas should be encouraged in pushing the game into the next frontier (which I am sure exsists!).

Anyhoo, dog out...

I agree, Dog. If another one were to be created, I feel that BPMMCs should only be encouraged. I think even if the game freezes, the score should still count but it'd be interesting to see what others think about that.

Anyone else interested?

[begin rant]

BPMMC's are an abomination and should NEVER be encouraged.

Why do I say that?  Because with the successful triggering of a BPMMC a player easily passes many players on the MARATHON leaderboard who put in hours and hours (and hours) along with multiple MMC's to get there.  That is what a MARATHON is, right?  I hate the idea of a SINGLE MMC (which automatically ends the game) holding such high standings on a MARATHON leaderboard.  (Yes, I keep emphasizing the word MARATHON for a reason!!! - I mean it's like having the Olympic Gold Medalist in the 100M dash winning the Boston Marathon!!!  - BLASPHEMY!!!)

Now if there was only a "SPRINT" leaderboard!  That would be the perfect place for "BPMMC'ers".  Smile [:)]

[end of rant!]

Re: Anyone interested in having another Hexathon?
I see your point, Flobby but couldn't the same thing be said for when MMCs were first discovered, the people who did them passed the people who'd played for hours only doing 1.7 million stars (or however many points it was, I forget)? Or (perhaps for a shorter time) the people who did SFMMCs passed the ones who'd only done MMCs? Surely this is just a natural progression?

That being said, it is imo a lot cooler to see your kind of score than someone who just did one without any kind of target other than a high rank.

Re: Anyone interested in having another Hexathon?

Yes, you are correct about the natural progression of the game.  My objection to BPMMC's however is that they are, by definition, "ONE SHOT DEALS" - once triggered the game ends.  To my mind that hardly falls under the definition of a "Marathon" game.

And thanks, I'm still very proud of that score, not so much for the actual amount (101 Billion is "chump change" these days!) but mainly because by ending on a pre-determined score it proved that I ended the game on MY terms, not the "Hexic Gods" terms.  Smile [:)]

OK, so we have (potentially) 4 for Tier 1, 2 for Tier 2 (unless Creepy's made an MMC, I can't remember) and 1 for Tier 3 lol. We need at LEAST 3 for each Tier if another one is to be made or maybe re-work the Tiers, though I'm not really sure how we could do that fairly. Any ideas?

Man, this is a good idea.  I have a Timed game out there with a grid and a bunch of saved stars that I'd like to MMC someday... but I'm so rusty that a Hexathon would definitely get me going again.
Of course, I say that... but I've done nothing but play Magic The Gathering since I downloaded it almost a month ago!

Everything has been fine mate. Just been swilling in Geometry Wars 2 love. #1 in (both) Waves and counting...

You may be onto something with Timed Mode. We could rinse and repeat the old Hexathon challege, but make it a Timed mode event as most if not all of us have good Marathon modes. or we could even have Marathon and Timed events/categories?

just spouting guys...

Anyhoo, good to have you back!

Now you're talking!  I think a Timed Mode event would be awesome - I'd love to be able to pull off a Timed MMC, honestly I've never tried simply because I believe I am waaaaay too deliberate to ever be able to do it.  I've got nothing but respect for those of you that can do it.  Would definitely make for a fun challenge.

Good to see you around Brassman - it takes a while to shake some of the rust off, but no doubt you'd be cranking out the MMC's again in no time.  Smile [:)]

LOL! Having a Timed Mode Hexathon would certainly count me and many others out of it but it wouldn't be a bad idea for the Elite, which, let's be honest, the majority of interest has so far come from them.

Nevertheless, more brainstorming is welcome!

Good to have you back btw, Brassman! I have downloaded that game but haven't tried it yet (the trial version).

Re: Anyone interested in having another Hexathon?
So how would a timed mode hexathon work?  You have 1 month to get as high as you can on the timed leaderboard?
(I should probably be a little more careful about using the phrase "get as high as you can" ... no prizes awarded for passing out!)

LOL!

I'm not sure how it would work - we'll have to leave that to Herr Meister to figure out.  I do have an idea though - let's take screenshots of our current high score in Timed, and then whoever has the best % increase by the end of the month will win!  (yes, I'm trying to handicap PrisonMike!!!  Wink [;)])

Or instead of having tiers, just have 2 categories of prizes:  Best % Gain and Best Points Gain

Well both of those categories would still leave me out. Just getting to 1.24 trillion in one month would be hard enough not to mention I would probaly have to get 100x that to stand a chance for the former and probably a score of 1.55 trillion to compete in the latter.   But maybe a increase in previous scores in Timed Mode and Survival Mode??? So that there would be at least one category I could compete in.

Re: Anyone interested in having another Hexathon?
I had this idea sometime last week. I'm not 100% sure exactly what I thought but maybe by saying what I DO remember, it might trigger it or it might help you guys come up with something better.

What about playing Timed like Bejeweled 2 Action Mode? Or I guess it could be played in Marathon, I suppose. You have only a limited time to make a certain amount of combos and you're not allowed to make stars. It went something like that and seemed a lot better than now. It would mean that anyone could take part and theoretically win and it might be interesting.

Or we could play Survival and go for the earliest board completion/highest score, idk.

Any other ideas?

I do not know but Survival and Marathon are what interest me right now, maybe we could have a contest to see if someone could beat AOKI's poobah record, timed mode game increase, and highest score in survival, but if we do not have a hexathon i will prob have to take a month or two break from hexic.Timed mode drained alot from me and  a lot of new games are about to come out.

Besides which, I really need to think of a format and could do with more input if possible.Smile [:)]
