Friend Needs Help with IP information.

Sup,
I resently got a friend of mine to get a 360 and im on the phone with him now trying to help him connect to Xbox-Live. He however is having trouble with his IP. Now he is on a Military Base. He cant acces his Modem. HOWEVER, the place has Routers in the rooms. He has his box Hard Wired but it keeps saying that it cant obtain an IP. The place is Wireless though. He can get on teh intrabuttz via his Laptop. So here is my question. How would he abtain his IP or if not possible would a Wireless connection work better?

have him try to use the wireless connection (assuming he has the wireless network adapter). go into network settings, scan for the network, and then set everything else (ip, dns servers, etc..) to automatic. does that let him sign in?
