The "updating experience points" message that appears at the end of a match since TU4 came out...
Is that to avoid the glitch where you lose your experience points and have to start from rank 1 all over again? Do they save the data on their servers? If that's the case, this update is awesome for this feature alone. I worried constantly that I would experience that glitch after one of my friends lost his experience points at level 48, just two levels shy of the 50 achievement.

As far as I understand this message is there as a reminder to not leave and lose 1500 points. The rank 1 glitch is a different part of the update but is in affect. Hope this wasn't written to confusing and help out.

Hmm.. Still not quite getting it. Did they do something with TU4 to eliminate or at least lower the chances of the rank 1 glitch or not?

Yes. There is no more rank 1 glitch. The message at the end of the round is totally different, it is only a reminder they added to not leave the game and lose 1500 exp.
