I am sorry, but I just do not see how it is a good thing that you are stuck in a squatting postion and unable to do anything for a couple of seconds after you fire the mortar. If an enemy comes running up to you while you are in the middle of firing, you are screwed, or at least you will be damaged heavily.

You are right. If it was realistic it probably would be heavy which is why you would never even bother picking it up if you were being attacked. Realistically, you would leave it on the ground and run off fighting; you would not pick it up just so you could drop it. And, realistically, you are not attached to the thing so you could instantlly jolt up and run away. But, this is a game so we are bound by the rules of it's creator. I just wish they had used better rules.
It depends on the situation and how good you are with the Mortar.
If you just blindly pick up the Mortar not knowing what to do when someone gets close, then the extra time it takes to drop the Mortar might be a problem.
I rarely get Mortar because I find it too easy to get kills with :P
The only time I go after it is on Pavillion so I can keep the other team from using it.
