Can someone share with me a series overview, and how they might be played today?
When I heard about the remakes/sequels coming out for the three Capcom games on XBLA (Commando 3, 1942:JS, and BC:R), I went out and purchased the Capcom Classics Collection Vol.1 & Vol. 2 (Xbox) along with the Mini Mix (GBA, for NES Bionic Commando).

I missed the games when I was younger, so it was fun getting introduced to three "new" series (new to me, of course).

The 1942 series is a lot of fun, and I've now played: 1942, 1943, 1943: Kai, 1941: Counter Attack, and of course 1942: Joint Strike.

What others are out there, and how might they be played today? I've heard people talk about a 19XX I believe, and I'm not sure how many others are out there. Are any of the games I haven't played available in retail format somewhere? Any of the games really stand out from one another in a good or bad way? Is there a general consensus of which games are considered the best and/or worst in the series?

Thanks for any info; always great to learn about another game series.

Happy Holidays!

You also missed 1944.  I would suggest getting MAME and downloading the roms from whatever you can find them.  The only format 19xx came out was in the arcade (japan and if you're lucky somewhere obscure).  Since you've played pretty much all the games in the series, you should know that KAI is just a beefed up version of the game.  19xx is the most different of the pack.  If you liked 1942 Joint Strike, you'll like 19XX.  1942 took much of the game play from 19xx: medals, charge shot (not that the other series dont have it), 3 plane types, most of the enemies and a few other things.

Zombies everywhere, zombies everywhere, zombies everywhere. They're coming for your brains and it's too late to change.

Thanks!

After reading your response, I did what I should have done first and did a search on wikipedia.

As you mentioned, the only ones it seems I've missed are 19XX and 1944. 1944 I hear wasn't actually developed by Capcom--I wonder if its still good? Wikipedia had very little info on that particular entry in the series.

I really wish there was a way to play 19XX however. I really enjoyed JS, and from you and wiki told me, a lot of the fun features of JS were from XX.

Either way, this is definitely a fun series--not the absolute best in terms of vertical shooters, but very enjoyable overall. I didn't enjoy the original 1942 very much, mainly just because 32 very similar "levels" got very repetitive after a while... but 43/Kai/41 were all a lot of fun. Kai was a bit "odd", but still enjoyable.

Now I'm caught up on the 19-- series and Commando series...time for Bionic Commando!

Happy Holidays!
