Hey GSP,
I'm playing Earthbound right now! I am in the 4th town and have defeated 3 of the 8 bosses that block "your base". What's up with the photographer that always takes snapshots and wants you to say "fuzzy pickles" LOL?
Anyway, since I didn't have very many games for the SNES back in the day which one should I play next? I was thinking about giving Chrono-Trigger a try. Is Arcana good?
Just give me a name, and i'll give it a try.
Oh, wow, that's awesome! Earthbound was easily my favorite RPG of all time, before M~Wind came along.
I've always been convinced that the "camera man" is actually the main character's dad, disguised as somebody else, in order to be part of his son's adventure. I never liked the fact that your dad is "at work" for the entire game. Besides that, you’ll notice the camera man has yellow hair, just like all the other members of Ness's family. That’s just my theory, but I’ve believed it as a fact for years.
Yeah, Chrono Trigger is pretty good, I've just gotten so bored with it over the years. The battles are really clunky & every enemy looks like a cartoon, in my opinion. However, it’s still a fun game with great music, & I love the time-traveling concept. Definitely worth playing a few times.
Arcana is great! For such an old, obscure game I’ve been wildly impressed by the level of detail in the character sprites, as well as movement produced by the monsters in battle. Also, for a 16-bit game Arcana has some amazing music! The environments of the game, although very simple, seem lush & vibrant with color. However, Arcana is so old & obscure I doubt you’ll find a copy anywhere but E-bay.
Another game I love, but doubt you’ll be able to find, is RoboTrek. Much like Earthbound, this game is filled with nonsensical humor. RoboTrek is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. Nearly every aspect of the game is unique, and haven’t been reproduced even after all these years. Instead of fighting monsters yourself, you create robots to do it for you. Instead of gaining EXP, you gain Megs of Data to gain levels. The entire game is centered around machinery, and as such the soundtrack is an eclectic jumble of bangs, whirs, pops, and bells.
Secret of Mana is probably the best game for you to sink your teeth into. Everything about the game is easy to understand. Attacks are performed with the simple press of a button. Equipment & magic menus pop up just as easily. Besides that, you can easily play Secret of Mana for hundreds of hours, since the game is so expansive. The game itself is incredibly glitchy, (colors are off, magic doesn’t appear, saved files vanish overnight, music skips, etc.) but none of these glitches has ever gotten in the way of me playing. Tons of “boss” battles, and really good music, too.
Super Mario RPG is another good game. However, like Chrono Trigger, my opinion of it has slipped downwards over time. Still good fun. I like the combination of standard turn-based battles & Mario-style action sequences, outside of combat. Great music & graphics, as well.
Breath of Fire 2 is a fantastic game, made by Capcom. This game features graphics & sprites that you can tell are the forerunners of Capcom’s popular fighting games. The battles are excellent & the enemies are very creepy. The music is pretty bland, but the battle theme is great. Be warned, however, that Breath of Fire 2 is an extremely difficult & arduous game. There is no “run” feature, so just walking from one end of a town to the other feels like torture. The game is also extreme long, and the boss battles are nearly impossible. This is a true classic, where you need to level-up 5 times before you can even think about undertaking your first assignment!
Final Fantasy 3 is the crème de la crème of the SNES RPG world. Due yourself a favor & grab an original copy of this for the SNES, as every remake to date has managed to butcher all the game’s sound effects. The original cartridge is still the best. What can I say? The game goes on & on for hundreds of hours, with incredible music & incredible enemy sprites (each one hand-drawn by Yoshitaka Amano & then rendered into pixels for the game) A list of weaponry, magic spells, armor, shields, helmets & accessories that even puts M~Wind to shame. A huge cast of unique characters, I think your party ends up with 20 or so members in the end.
Hope you took the time to read this crap & I hope it helps.
