No playoff format like the NFL...How bout a tournament like Basketball

But this will not happen anytime soon..T.V. Contracts etc.......Until all contracts are completed, no type of playofff can occur......

Re: Does NCAA need PLAYOFFS???

division II and III  do, why can't I? really makes no sense.  i would love to be watching boise state womp on florida right now.  but then again, of all the mock-up playoff senarios i've seen, none of them had boise state in it. lol

i really think there should be though.  from a players perspective, it's not fair if you're in a lower division I school and you know you have no shot of a national championship, but in the ncaa and you go to gonzaga or another lower ranked DI school, you can atleast dream of a national championship.  however far of a stretch it may be, it's still a possiblity.  i'm not saying that football needs a 64 bracket playoff, but atleast 8 teams.

It dont only need a playoff. But it needs a playoff that starts at the end of the season.Or a week after.

Waiting over a month really stops all momentum a team has built up all season.

Easy there Captain...first you're gonna have to drop a team, and it might as well be the suckiest one, USC! Stick out tongue [:P]

Absolutely! Being an ex-athletic myself, I feel it is fair to have a true playoff system.  We speculate every year who is the best, who has the harder schedule, and who has the best roster. It is alwys been too subjective.

Conference playoff

division

regional

championship

There has to be a way!!!!!

Re: Does NCAA need PLAYOFFS???

There are some great points here, but think of it this way. Because the way that the current system is set up the reg season match ups in the big conferences are huge. I know most people like to bash other conferences but to tell you the truth there are match ups in each conference that I look forwad to each year because of their implications on the rest of the country. Outside of the big ten I watch a ton of sec acc pac 10 some big 12. Esp in the sec there are some great match ups on any given week that impact so many other teams. I can understand why many people want the playoff, but because a loss can be so huge I find myself watching so much other football and getting wrapped up in to the end because it may effect my team or a team in our conference. Sometimes I think that a playoff would make me lose a little interest in these big games in the other big conferences, and to be honest I am selfish and I like spending my saturdays wrapped in all the great games from each conference. I probably watched more sec football this year than any conference because every single week there is a great match up and I knew that if osu ran the table we would play a team from that conf. Congrats gator fans and I can't wait to start this all over again next year

Re: Does NCAA need PLAYOFFS???

I have heard this argument before, but cant's understand how a playoff ,at the end of the season , lessens the great matchups during.  A great Sec matcup is still great and may mean making the playoffs for any given team.  Home filed advantage and team seeding would be at stake, and a team would still need a strong record to make the playoffs.  The people that say  a playoff would make regular season games less important are the same people that only watch a game when a top ten ranking is involved.  The true reason college footbal does not have a playoff system is money.  The BCS commites and college presidents have not found a more lucrative scheme then what they already have.  Nothing will change until the schools feel that more money can be made with a playoff then the currnt system. Schools saying they don't want students to miss more school,or emphasizing the importance of the regular season are nothig more than smokescreens.

Re: Does NCAA need PLAYOFFS???
I totally agree and understand the money aspect, but under the current system, when my buckeyes lose  regular season game it usually takes me a few weeks to get over it, when my browns lose ( yes I know this is a regular thing) I am over it in 10 or 15 min. Besides, the ncaa would be crazy to go to a playoff, nobody talks college basketball after the final 4, Listen to sports talk radio over the next couple of months, as they begin to talk about the draft they will start talking about a player from auburn, and the conversation will soon start to lean the direction of how they got screwed a couple of years ago, or someone from usc will call and go over how they had a let down against ucla. Eventually the talk is all college ball. That exposure is priceless.

if... If... IF... we ever get any type of playoff (and that's a HUGE IF) it would more than likely be a top 4 thing... Boise wouldn't have made it to the top 4 anyway.

Re: Does NCAA need PLAYOFFS???

Well if they would have had a 4 team playoff this year, why not give boise state a chance. The only way to find out if a mid major is worthy is to give them a shot.

Well as it stands right now lol the BCS setup is goin' to be the death of NCAA football lol.  Just got to get it more organized because the Badgers (and other teams) get all the way up into the top 10 and even top 5...then start the following year unranked.  Just dont seem right.  Just my 2 cents.

I disagree... as much as I hate the BCS, I don't think it will be the "death of NCAA (division IA (added)) football"... we could feasably go on like we are... but until we come up with a way where we translate a playoff bracket into dollars and cents (more so than the current BCS bowl setup)... the university presidents won't listen... why should they upset the apple cart and risk those profits? (I happen to think there *is* a way to have a playoff structure *and* keep the big 4 bowls relevent and making money)...

There are no reasons other than the almighty $.  Devil [6]Everyone knows it.  Academics isn't an excuse (even though coaches and AD's will use it) because think of division II & III.  They have playoffs and their students seem to survive just fine.  How much class do big time basketball players miss in Feb/March?  They seem to get along pretty well too.

Look at Boise State.  Maybe they wouldn't have won a playoff, but can anyone honestly say they don't deserve a CHANCE!  A college playoff would eventually catch & surpass march madness in terms of popularity and cash flow.  Again everone except the people in power know this.

Yes absolutely.  Use the current bowl venues as playoff game locations.  Then for the championship rotate around who hosts like in the olympics still utilizing one of the bowl venues!  It is time for a play off system.
